Me too. Zippo pigs or sheep or cows. Tons of wolves though. I have an army
Dont forget that the Wolves count agains your passive mob limit.
If you keep too many it will reduce the likelyhood of other passive mobs spawning.
At the moment I am killing everything I find until I have found a place to settle.
Edit: The reason I am killing everything on my travels it to get the drops, but mainly to make sure they respawn somewehere close to where I settle down.
I have said this on numerous topics. You MUST get rid of a lot of tall grass and I mean a lot of tall grass. I had that same problem and then went on here and found out about the tall grass and then just destroyed a whole lot of it. Now I have around 60 wool blocks and a have seen a number of animals. Once I see them I kill them and let more spawn. Its been working for me and my friend now too.

You have to REALLY look for them. But, I have seen all the passive mobs so it isn't a bug. Yes, though, they are much rarer now.
No, it is a bug. This was present back in the day on the PC as well. Natural wolves don't have the same spawn mechanics as other passive mobs, so the same rules don't apply to them. This causes them to severely overpopulate. They are not persistent unless tamed. Killing any and all wolves that spawn will increase the likelihood of something useful spawning and once they do, they'll stay until killed.
same here, I have the same issue. So what i have done it set up pens and every time I find an egg I throw it in the pen. Every so often a chicken will hatch. Keep doing that and you can then have a regular supply of meat.
Also it's now important to grow your wheat, you can then make bread.

The pen sounds like a good idea but.... I have no chickens haha. And I prefer mushroom soup.
Apparently, Etho says in his 102 video (He started 1.8 on video 101) that passive mobs used to spawn every tick (internal game clock or something) but now they only spawn every 400 ticks.
And they will only spawn if the passive mob cap hasnt been reached, I think excessive squid are having an effect for everybody.
All other solutions above will have an effect, but theres too much water everywhere. Its killed my animal farm.
So most likely our worlds are just filled with wolves and not pigs, cows, etc? Wolves are taking over.
I dont know about you guys, but i hadnt seen any cows in days (killled a lot early on, for meat) same with chickens..and pigs...but didnt touch sheep, wolves, or squids. couldnt find any of the first group, killed like 6 sheep, and boom, half a day later, 4 cows spawn in front of me. sorry, but i dont believe in coincidences. so, im going to go and kill anything that i dont want to keep, on sight. i will keep a cow and a few chickens...
I think wolves are spawning preferentially to the pigs, cows, chickens and sheep in the forest and taiga biomes and filling the cap quickly if you even walk through these areas. If you're lucking enough to kill a bunch of wolves and get out of the forest to taiga biome quickly enough, you stand a better chance of spawning some of the other passive mobs on the plains (but that's hard to do, particularly if you've built a home base in or near a forest or taiga biome. If you have a lot of water on your map (and many of the maps do), then I think the squid take over since the pigs, cows and sheep don't spawn in the water. I also think a number of the passive mobs are getting stuck in watering holes and part way down caves. I'm really missing their sounds and their activity around me during the day.
Also i think part of the problem is the world size. since we have limited worlds, we have limited, well limits. computer fellows can just wander until they find some animals. us not so much

The last thing I want to do is walk ever farther and farther away from my home base just to find a stupid sheep, pig or cow. I actually think the caps are the same, since it's based on a formula that only considers a certain distance around the player.
A poster on another thread said that the passive mobs used to be able to respawn on every "tick" and now they can only respawn on something like every 400th tick. If this is so, then this would vastly slows down their replacement even if you kill a number of them. I think, however, that the wolves and the squid are respawning at a quicker pace than the others (probably because they spawn only in certain biomes) and filling the caps back up before the others respawn. In the one world I had where my home base was in the middle of a plain with very little water around and I had stuck pretty close to my original spawn point, I saw a much higher frequently of pigs, chickens, and cows than I am in my current survival world. Sheep, however, were still very rare (had to raid wool from the nearby NPC village lamps for a bed).
I knew animals would be rare, so I didn't kill any that initially spawned near me. Unfortunately, tons of wolves also spawned near me and killed all the sheep for me. I haven't seen another since. Very hard to make a bed with no supply of wool. And I don't have much tall grass since this is a pre-update world, so that excuse won't fly.
Tons of chickens (I made from eggs)... and wolves... nothing else. Wish this had been addressed before 1.8.2 was released like many requested of 4J via Twitter and here MONTHS ago.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Yeah, the might be "more rarer" but we have HUNGER. In the PC it isn't this hard to find mobs.
So I find it as something they have to fix.
Tall grass? Well... I'll try that.

How do you find something that's not there?

Yeah I hope they fix it in the next patch
