The reason is simple: It's too different from Minecraft. Everyone knows Minecraft as a "Do what you want! Go where you want! Want a story? Get a custom map!" kind of game. Making a story-based game off a makes people think Mojang and Telltale are saying: "This is the story of Minecraft. Nothing else, just this, DEAL WITH IT." They're really saying, "It's like an adventure map, but better! "
Right now I am quite undecided by it, but I would guess that people don't like it simply because it would give a story/purpose to minecraft, which originally does not have one. And that's a great aspect of it.

People need to stop treating Story Mode like a part of Minecraft. It's not, it's a completely separate game, and it's not a sequel to Minecraft or anything like that. Think of it as another game that happens to include Minecraft characters.
Anyway, personally I probably won't buy it because Telltale Games tends to leave out major parts of their games just to add them as DLCs, I don't want to pay for one game 6 times. It does look really cool though. Reminds me of the Lego Movie for some strange reason. The only thing I'm worried about is Story Mode not staying in line with Minecraft canon, but then again it's a separate game so whatever.

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
Okay to clear up any confusion left: Minecraft Story Mode is a game made by Telltale Games and is completely separate from the actual Minecraft game. It's not an existing gamemode and you don't need Minecraft to play it, you can buy it separately. Telltale's known for their episodic adventure games, but I don't necessarily think that this is the right direction for Minecraft. Even though this game gets a bit of leeway for not being directly branded onto Minecraft, I'm still pretty concerned.
Minecraft's a game all about having no clear direction and the ability to do whatever you want, which gives people like Minecraft animators lots of opportunities to tell their own stories based off of Minecraft. I'm pretty sure this is what Minecraft Story Mode's going to amount to, but the fact that it's being made by a game company and it's a full game is what bothers me. You can't really push a story onto others to follow in Minecraft unless it's something like an adventure map, and I guess that's what I'm getting at here. It looks like a glorified adventure map.
The story looks cliched and worn-out, too. I mean, did you hear some of that dialogue? "Everyone's running away, except for you"? "Our gang sticks together, that's what we do"? Not to mention the absolutely horrendous lip-synching which is now a staple of Telltale... And the fact that there are Minecraft animators on YouTube who make Minecraft videos that are much much better quality than this scares me.
It's being advertised as having "your choices, your story" though, so I don't know, maybe some of my fears here will be unfounded? I'll just have to play the game myself to see how it really is, so I'm going to give it a chance.
I was about to go on a rant, but it seems you covered all the bases for me.
Especially the cliches and bad animation. It's even worse that the cutscenes for the trailer are horrible, those are usually made to look better than normal! Story is not what Minecraft is about, never had been. Unless something amazing happens, I'm going to disapprove of it.
The only thing worse is the *shudder* Minecraft Movie... Satan himself had that idea.
No. It won't it will just seem like Mojang is trying to suck the money out of our pockets. They might as well make us pay $5 every month to play minecraft itself. MInecraft becomes a bigger community because of youtubers. You don't see someone want the game because they saw a Minecraft shirt.
There way of selling their games is really dumb. It is mostly just to create hype over the same game. You could probably even recreate this game in minecraft using redstone. Also I don't really like the characters they seem kind of dumb. The story seems like it will just be about going to the nether which in fact isn't even the true objective in the game. It is to go to the End and beat the Ender Dragon. The Nether is more of a side quest than an objective.
The Nether is more of a side quest than an objective.
According to the wiki: "It is possible to complete the game (access the End) without ever entering the Nether."
There aren't any quests or objectives. Even going to the End and killing the dragon is optional and, if done, still doesn't finish the game. That's the point. As others have said, it just seems like a really expensive Adventure map to me; why pay for something like that? If I want to play an Adventure map I'll download one, but, frankly, I find them pretty boring, because they turn Minecraft into just another objective-based game.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Well, most people (like me) like Minecraft and play it because, you aren't following a storyline, you can do whatever you want, and build, and play with your friends, and whatever, but with this new story mode, Minecraft is straying from what is used to be, a crafting and survival game, now it is slowly loosing the reason it became popular. If you want story mode, get a mod. This is just too much.

This game is definitely not just for kids, although it is made to be appropriate for them. There are many people in their 20's and 30's that play minecraft.

it becomes a mysterious, awesome, incredibly magnificent world in itself"-Henry Miller
Why people hate it? Because it's against the core of Minecraft itself, and because it's a different game. Minecraft is what it is because of the freedom of doing whatever you want, I don't know how popular "Story mode" will be.

See, the thing I don't get about this argument is: if Minecraft is all about doing whatever you want, then why the heck are adventure maps popular?
So true. But really, people just like to choose their own storys.
They way i see it, minecraft is heading in a direction where there will always be normal minecraft, but they will start releasing other games with other storys and points. Some more like skyrim, or fallout, or maybe even skylanders.

Because Minecraft allows you to do not only what you want, but also what others want you to do. You have choices. And that's why hating this game is ridiculous. The game doesn't affect Minecraft in any way. it's still an OPTION to buy this game and play it, and it has nothing to do with where the original Minecraft is going in terms of story.
Essentially, Minecraft: Story Mode is a spinoff game, not an update/sequel/new gamemode.

I personally don't like the character models. Those faces creep me out so much.

See my earlier post. This is not a new gamemode for Minecraft. This is an entirely new story-based game that is not part of the original Minecraft.
