I've searched this forum for a while to no avail. I believe people are just leaving their Playstations on 24/7 and letting others log-in to the world. Is that all I need to do? Are there any recommendations on how to keep the PS4 safe and connected? How are people able to sleep in the world if there's an AFK user all the time. I am so completely new at this, but I'd love to create a friends-and-family server and this could really help me out.
I ran one of those 14/7 server in my PS4 for a few months, it was pain. The players couldn't get afar more than 2000 blocks that it would crash. There where frequent crashes and each time it crashed there was 50% of world corruption, so I had to dump a copy of the world twice a day to an external HD using PS4 menus. On the event of rollbacks players would get really frustrated. When the world reached 1GB in size things got even harder to maintain, crashes were more frequent and lag increased. That was when I gave up the PS4 as a server and migrated to the cloud.
Another down side of having a PS4 as server is that you cannot extract your world to host it somewhere else cos PS4 has encrypted file systems.
When you say "migrated to the cloud", what do you mean? Moving to PC? Or is there another way I can host a PS4 world? This is probably going to be a small world, less than 10 players, just my family and friends. Would it still be a pain? Also, the people I want to play with aren't very tech-saavy. They aren't going to be able to use phantom or the like. If there's a way I can do the tech work on my end so that they can just log-in from the PS4 menu, that'd be ideal.
Migrated to the cloud: yes, it is running in a PC in the cloud with an external internet IP address.
I taught the players to set up phantom in audio calls, it was quick for some and a little bit slower to others, nothing that I couldn't manage supporting them. I am the only tech savvy in the group.
Well, you probably can manage to run the server on your ps4, but mind this: it will corrupt and you will completely loose the world file, meaning that you will need to save backups regularly so that you have a file to fall back to when that happens. That happened to me a lot in 1.14, crashes are supposed to be improved in 1.16, let me know what you find out afterwards?
I know this comment comes a little late but if your game world ever corrupts while running a 24/7 server you can always start your ps4 up in safe mode and restore the database. Ive had a 24/7 server since april 2020 and its corrupted about 10 to 15 times and every time ive always been able to get my world back to how it was right before it crashed.
