I am playing the PS3 version and I have made like 40 or so homes, I am trying to spawn new villagers but it keep telling me that I have reached the max. It was to my understanding that the more houses you made the more villagers you could have. Like the villagers = 35% of the doors or something, so in doing the math that should be about 14 villagers. However I am counting the villagers now and it seemed to be at 41 villagers.
So my question is (Is there a Max) or (What is the max) per a world?
Though I have never reached the villager cap, I will assume it is similar to breeding animals too, that there is a maximum entity limit.
You might try going to a different area of your world and see if you can create villagers in a new area- then you could take them by rail back to your original houses and add them to the population that way. I don't know if it will work, just a suggestion.
If you killed all the villagers in a world, and tried to spawn more, then you would only be able to spawn 50. You would eventually hit the same limit breeding villagers. However, some worlds can spawn with a number of villagers that is greater than 50, but if this happens, then you won't be ble to breed or spawn anymore
I'm not sure about the PS3 version, but on the PC version it appears to be unlimited. I once built a basement underneath my village and the villagers decided to congregate there. If villagers go a certain number of blocks below a village, the algorithm that counts them won't "see" them and won't count them towards the population cap. This caused a population explosion in my village and before it ended I had well over 100 villagers. And that's just in that one village. I've found a total of 8 villages in that world, with an average of about 10 villagers each.
I haven't tried it yet, but I hear you can get past the limit by curing zombie villagers. It may not work on PS3, I'm not sure if I heard about it for PS3 specifically or if it was a PC thing. It might cause problems though, so I'd save on a USB stick first.
I know this is a WAY old thread but I know that the villager cap is around 34 to 36 in a survival world. I know this to be true as I can always get three iron farms up and running but never a 4th. 1 iron farm...minimum 10 villagers.

"cant use spawn egg at the moment. The maximum number of villagers in a world has been reached."
