Do I have to sleep in a biome known to have animals for them to spawn?
Right now my base is in the desert. I venture into the surrounding areas looking for animals for food. Animals seem scarce at times and I wonder why that is.
i'm not 100% positive, but passive mobs (cows/chickens/etc) should be spawning for you in the desert, what you could do though is build an enclosure, less than 20X20 and grab some wheat, then go cow hunting or pig hunting, keep the wheat in your hand and the cows/sheep/pigs will follow you, lead them to the enclosure you made and close it off, animals will not despawn if they cannot move more than 20 blocks in any direction (i'm pretty sure of that)
but if you can get your hands on wheat, the bread you could make from it is a better food source anyways, it has i think the second longest saturation amount and it fills you up on 2,5 hunger bars (mushroom stew being the best at saturation and 3 hunger bars i think)
