I'm having the same issue. Have a family membership, have changed view settings on switch (I read this may be a possible cause on another forum), and have also deleted and redownloaded the software to no avail.
I have contacted minecraft but over a month without reply.
Hopefully one of the above options helps you out, if not hopefully someone else can be of more use.
Have played 3 ppl split screen before.

and getting error saying cannot join
