Hey, i've been wanting to build an automatic item sorter to extend my survival world. I've watched 3 different tutorials on how to build item sorters and can't quite decide on which one is the best to build. If someone could take time out of their day to share their opinion with me, it would be much appreciated.
The last two videos you posted are basically the same type of sorter. This is pretty much the most basic design and works great for the most part.
JL's design in the first video appears to be a modified concept to avoid some issues (especially in multiplayer) that could break an item sorter like the other two videos are using. His design uses two different sorting configurations in an alternating pattern. This keeps signal from leaking over into an adjacent sorting circuit and breaking your sorting system.
It's important to distinguish between the actual parts of a complete item sorter system.
The most basic parts are:
Item transportation pipeline (pre-sort)
Item sorter circuit (actual sorting)
Storage delivery pipeline (post sort)
More advanced features:
On/off item feeding control
Reset circuit to fix rare instances where a torch gets stuck on.
Personally in single player I'm using the more basic design shown there and have little issues other than when I made a mistake while testing it during construction. However if the game glitches out or if your storage backs up, you can have an issue with that basic design where more than one item might get into the sorting circuit and cause it to put out a greater signal than expected and this can cause it to trigger the adjacent sorters and cause the sorter earlier in the transportation pipeline to pull in any item. This is why JL's system utilizes an alternating sorting circuit design.
Problems are extremely possible at chunk boundaries if parts of the sorter system become unloaded while it is in the process of sorting. This is where the on/off item feed control feature comes in handy. It is basically a pre-sort storage where items are placed before they are sorted and you manually have to turn it on to allow items to enter your sorting system. This allows you to control when the sorter is operating to a time when you are going to remain in the area for a length of time. Just allow a few minutes after turning it off for items already in the system to be sorted before leaving or logging out.
As for actual layout, that is open to personal taste as long as you calculate the necessary space for the system components.
Thanks rodabon for your feedback. I really do like JL's design because it is capable of sorting every item in the game. (I also found another item sorter that did the same thing, link is below). But i was reading the comments of his video and people where saying there was problems with there hoppers and i was just wondering if they had made an error or updates just broke the item sorter. There were a stack of people asking does it work in 1.8 etc. I just don't want to dedicate myself to this big build if its not gonna work.
Also, i had built a glass item elevator almost identical to his and for some reason mine just didn't work, would i have just made an error somewhere or does it not work because of an update.
If you are also able to answer these questions, it would be also much appreciated.
It you are one tick off or in the wrong mode on one comparator it will not work at all. Make sure that it's 100% working before you start a big one. I have videos on most everything and I'm doing a one minute redstone series. I will send you a video.
