I have mine craft on the PS3 but it is not currently connected to the internet as we only get 15Gig a month download limit (Live in the countryside).
My son wants to try out some of the seeds but it seems we need to be connected to the PSN. Can anyone tell me how much data is used per seed? I am assuming it is basically downloading a level/map for each seed.
A seed is just a number that initializes Minecraft's random number generator, which in turn creates a map. Since the RNG is really pseudo-random -- that is, if it starts at the same place, it always produces the same results -- two maps generated with the same seed will be identical. This post that you're reading right now uses more data than a seed would.
Seeds do not require any downloading whatsoever. When you create a world you have the option to let the seed be generated randomly or you may enter a specific seed (numbers, letters or combination of characters) in the first screen when you create your new world. Simply input the seed data in this screen.
As Akynth stated, this will produce a world with similar results (though not identical).
Furthermore, this only generates a newly spawned world with similar features, not any player-made structures or modifications. This function, which would require utilizing somebody else's world data file, is not currently supported by the PS3 version.

I have satellite internet with a usage limit and I do alot of minecraft online and have had no issues with playing with others online. Generating seeds however is something that can be done offline. Just choose a seed at random and it will create the world. No online usage needed. You don't even have to be connected to an internet connection to play. Hope that helps!

I get the whole random number seed thing. I thought it may have downloaded textures or extra content to go along with the auto generated terrain.
Also there a seeds that are names and I was thinking these might be complete downloadable levels.

Thanks, you know my pain of usage limit then!!
My confusion is that the PS3 version will not let you type in a seed unless you are connected to the PSN.

Do you know why the PS3 requires you to be connected to the PSN to use this functionality then?

No, I do not. It does not require me to be online.
I was in Tech Support for some time (no, not for Mojang)... please read on.
From the main menu, select "Play Game" (if you are not online, simply press "Continue playing offline").
Select "Create New World". Enter a name for the new world if desired. Scroll down to the second input "Seed for the World Generator".
Here you may leave blank for a random seed, or enter a custom seed number.-
I'm sure you'll get it from here... sheeeshh... programmers!!! Always try to complicate things- LOL ;-P
P.S. I left out a 'close parentheses' and edited to fix... knew it would drive you crazy!

So mostly I am taking my 6yr old sons word for all of this. When I get home tonight I will sit down with him and go through what you have written. (Solving this will make him very happy

See what I did there ;-)
Nope, just terrain. Character strings are converted to numbers internally, and the result used to seed the RNG. And you know how it goes from there.
