For reasons, I built a 'technical' Village on top of the Nether, where I have a Pigmen Grinder right next to it. (Or grinder with no pigmen. :/ ) I was going for a kinda, 2 in 1 special, Iron and Gold. The 2 farms aren't touching, or within each other by any means, just right next to each other. And no matter how valid I've made the spawning platform (for pigmen), doesn't seem to want to work. I made sure the platform was a solid block (netherrack), light doesn't effect their spawn, there is no roof - just one platform - so it's obviously 2 blocks high, plenty of spawning space, not even close to 'max building height'. Even put difficulty on hard, and stood max amount of distance for them to spawn, but close enough so they don't de-spawn. Unless something changed... (Which something always does with this game. :/ ) The only other thing I can think of is the boundary of the 'Village' I created, interfering with the spawns, or issues of Pigmen spawning while the village is in the same chunk as the Grinder... something like that. So my question is, do hostiles spawn inside village boundaries in general? If not, any other help would be appreciated...
There may be mobs that are not despawning (having an item in hand picked up from the ground) that are interfering with the mob cap so there is no more spawn. Maybe you can scan the server in spectator mpde or use mcedit to find large groups of mobs.
Ps. A village should not effect spawn rate of zombie pigmans or any hostile mobs at all (exept normal zombies, they spawn more ).
Yes. For 1, I realized that about the hostiles and non-hostiles. The only hostile is the One Zombie in the Iron Grinder, that's it. And there aren't any 'entities' from anything that could be clogging up the mob-cap. (Trust me...) And for 2, No this isn't a server it's Single-Player... I can't 'scan' it. (Especially if it means installing mods.) Like if it's gonna be THIS much of a hassle to fix something so little and simple, I'm just giving it up. I'm just not playing anymore btw. :/
I can confirm that pigmen spawn above 128 for me. What exact height is your platform at though? I did not test near the sky limit with my farm. Also try toggling to hard as more may spawn on that difficulty which is better for testing. I know the pigman/zombie reinforcements do spawn a lot more on hard.

I built all the way to max-height. Minus a couple blocks, for spawning room, and I tried at all distances away, all the way down to bedrock level, and then some... And I had it on hard everytime, I never forgot that. I think I know what they changed, the height of the Nether roof is 128. Leaving you Exactly 128 blocks to max building height, probably just enough to make it not work... Was the roof always 128?
I just realized you never said what platform you're playing on.
I have my render distance on 8. Tried lowering it to help. But humor why raising it would help, why not, nothing else has worked thus far. :/ And this all has been on PC, windows 7, latest update - 1.11.2

That is most likely your issue. It's a long standing bug with mob spawns getting hung up out in chunks outside of render distances lower than 10 and fill up the mob cap. Usually you can observe a few spawns initially if you set the game to peaceful then change back, but they quickly stop as mobs get hung up out there.

*sigh*..... Guess I'll try one last time then. The umm reason I leave it at 7-8, is cuz it's basically playing on a potato... :/ But I guess that doesn't matter if it's an AFK thing. And I am playing on a custom map that makes you 'lock' the difficulty. But somehow, and it's weird, idk if it's a glitch crossing between dimension worlds, but the option becomes unlocked randomly out of nowhere. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's kinda querky. Idk if it actually is the portal itself that's doing it, but that's what it seemed like at the time. Haven't really found the pattern/trend to why that is yet, tho. I opened to LAN, went through portal, and vuala unlocked. Do it again, 'Not' unlocked. Go through a portal normally, unlocked. Yeah, Idk... But I'll try one last time, thanks.
The bedrock nether roof was always at 128, that used to be the actual world height. No idea why they changed the world height but never actually opened it up "to the public" as it were. Maybe they were initially intending to use it as a mapmaking "pocket dimension" to give mapmakers a place to put stuff players couldn't normally access or which they could only access through special means?

No, I think they decided they didn't want to add that much more space to the nether because they had been dealing with lag issues in the nether for people on low end machines since it had been added and doubling the amount of generated space would only increase the problem.

Hmmm, what's your render distance set to? If under 10, try turning up to 10 and retesting.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Render distance 10 chunks could be pretty speedy above the nether roof, where there is almost nothing to render.
Good to know. Thanks dude.
