I bought Minecraft shortly after Christmas in 2012, and I've enjoyed playing it ever since. I've played lots of Survival, I've built many different structures in Creative mode I'm proud of, and the only parts of this game I haven't learned about (yet) are command blocks and commands. I believe I have an above-average understanding of the game, and I think it's the greatest game ever made.
The one major thing I've never done, is traveled to The End and killed the Enderdragon. In the first few weeks after I bought Minecraft, I explored The End in Creative mode, but I didn't bother with the Enderdragon. That will change soon. About an hour ago, I decided to locate the End Portal, and get the ball rolling to see the End of Minecraft. I've found it now, and I just need to go through the Portal.
Any tips from those who've already done this?

I don't got much to say, besides the fact that a Bow will be an extremely important tool. Shoot those crystals on top of the obsidian towers because those heal the dragon, and shoot the dragon in general. He'll fly around, but if he dives at you, shoot and hit him and he'll fly off again. If you don't he will fly into you and you'll take damage, the amount of damage depending on the difficulty. You could build upwards and stab the crystals with a sword on the towers, but I don't recommend that, as they explode on contact.
Bring enchanted iron/diamond armour. I suggest iron armour if you don't feel like using up diamonds. I highly suggest an enchanted diamond sword and multiple iron swords for emergencies. Bring a bow with enchantments (Especially Infinity) If not, bring multiple bows and about two or three stacks of arrows.
Bring a pickaxe and some torches, those are important for getting the Dragon Egg.
Bring food, lots of it.
Get some water buckets to get some endermen out of your way while battling the ender dragon (that is if you accidentally looked at one).
I don't suggest bring pets or making golems...just don't...
DON'T: Attempt to break the crystals with your sword. Ender Crystals are MORE DANGEROUS than TNT blocks and can do a lot more damage, if you survive an explosion from a Ender Crystal, you are likely to die from falling off the columns from that impact or the Ender Dragon, or the Ender Dragon pushing you off the column and thus killing you as well..
DON'T: Build blocks or build a base to protect yourself from the ender dragon or enderman. Ender Dragons are capable of destroying any block except bedrock and obsidian.
DON'T: Harvest the Dragon Egg with your pick. This will destroy it completely. Build a small hole that is 3 blocks deep. Put a torch underneath the dragon egg which should be above an enderstone. Break the enderstone using your pick, the torch will force the egg to turn it into an item, making it easy for you to pick it up. Here is an example if you don't understand:
Pretend the Flint is a Dragon Egg, and pretend the sand is a Endstone Block.
The only enchantments useful to you are Infinity and Power. Nothing else really matters (and even those don't matter much). For armor, unenchanted iron armor is all you'll really need; the Enderdragon deals a lot of damage in one hit, but attacks ridiculously slowly, can be seen from a mile away, and his attacks can be deterred by shooting him with an arrow.
The most important thing to bring is a bow and lots and lots of arrows (or Infinity). Three stacks or more, to be safe. Just shoot the crystals, shoot the Enderdragon if you see him flying directly at you, then shoot more crystals until you have a large swathe of the island cleared so he can't heal. Then just shoot him until he dies. He's not a difficult boss in the slightest, but it's a long and boring fight.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
You should also take a pumpkin (but maybe not wear it all the time). It keeps you from aggro'-ing Endermen by looking at them, but it obstructs your view.
Alternate strategy involving a sword (more dangerous, need more stuff):
I suggest (if you want a different strategy. maybe you have trouble aiming the bow or want to deal more damage per hit) taking diamond armor, regen/healing potions, and an enchanted diamond sword. In this case, shoot the crystals with the bow, but hit the dragon with the sword over and over until he turns away when he charges you. However, you may want the bow strategy instead. It is far less dangerous (so no ench. armor and regen/heal potions needed) than the sword method.

Also: don't forget to bring a stack of expendable blocks, like dirt or cobblestone. This is so yo can make a bridge to the Ender island, if your spawn platform is located away from it.
It's a lot simpler to just go to the island with an Ender Pearl, as the dragon can destroy your bridge, trap you, and potentially drop you into the void.
Thanks for all the advice. Is it possible to kill the dragon without destroying all the crystals on the tops of the obsidian pillars?

Remember that the Enderdragon instantly vaporizes blocks upon contact (except obsidian, End Stone and bedrock, he simply passes through these).
Snowballs and chicken eggs do 1/2 heart damage to the Ender Dragon, and they also destroy Ender Crystals, so you could use these if you want a cheap source of damage and don't feel like wasting your bow/arrows (especially for the Ender Crystals).
If you destroy the Crystal while the Ender Dragon is being healed by it, it will take additional damage (even when not in the explosion range).
Try to hit the Ender Dragon on the head, since attacks that land anywhere else only do 1/4 damage.
Don't sleep during the battle, since beds explode in the End.
Potions and attacks from other mobs don't affect the Ender Dragon at all. It only takes damage from players and explosions. However, the Ender Dragon can sometimes fly into Endermen and anger them; while this doesn't help you in the fight it can be amusing to watch.
Upon the Ender Dragon's death, the Dragon egg will be on top of the Bedrock portal; to use Endergirl00's method first click on the Egg to make it teleport, then use the torch method (or push it with a piston).
Also if you are thinking about fighting the Wither afterwards and you are on 1.8/1.8.1, don't do it since it moves and attacks while still invincible. Ok the forum software refuses to insert the link so I posted it here: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-57569

The Enderdragon can be destroyed by placing TNT at the portal frame in the middle, once the ender crystals are gone he comes to the middle and then, you set it off and it does a lot of damage to him, if you don't believe me, then watch stampy and squids lab 51 lets play, at the end they destroy the enderdragon with TNT

If you say plz because it's shorter than please, then I will say no because it is shorter than yes
Before entering, make a bed and sleep right by the portal so if you die, you respawn right by the portal
This is probably the best advice anyone's given so far. Really. I could just end up falling off of the End Island and respawning thousands of blocks away.

It might be better to spawn a few thousand blocks away if you fall off the End island. What are you going to do, beat the dragon up with your bare hands? The Dragon is weak but not THAT weak. If you fall off your stuff is most definitely dead so unless you put a chest full of backup loot next to the bed, you're going to have to make new gear on the spot or trek back home for new gear.
Although, if you die from an Enderman or the Dragon, the bed is a decent idea, though won't effect much except letting you get back in faster (the chunks in the End aren't loaded so your stuff won't start to despawn until you enter the End).

You often spawn on a tiny platform out in the void, and need to build a bridge over to the End island. While you are doing this the Ender Dragon can come by and knock you off the bridge. If you have brought all your good gear you've lost it forever.
So my advice (if you are not on hardcore mode), is to go in naked with an ordinary bow and a stack of cobble. You'll probably die, but once you have that bridge in place, you can come back in with your good gear.
Enderpearls or building blocks if your spawn isn't on the main island, pick, infinity bow, arrow, armor, food and sleep in the stronghold before you go so you spawn right back outside the portal.
This is how my brother and I defeated it last night.
and if you want to keep the enderman away wear a pumpkin on your head, it ruins your vision a bit but its better than having those tools killing you.
The most important thing to kill hit is the bow, also have a good sword because occasionally it flies down to try and send you flying, try and get a few hits on it there. And if you don't have an infinity bow you're inventory better be full of mostly arrows because not even accuracy helps

You don't need to destroy ALL of them. Just clear out a large enough space so most of the time he's out of range of the crystals.

Let's do some math.
1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 * 3 = 1
0.333... * 3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...
1 - 0.999... = 0.999... - 0.999...
0.0...1 = 0
0.0...1 * 10... = 0 * 10...
1 = 0
I got banned.
