Throw out that Chromebook and get a windows 7 gaming PC!
THE MICRO$OFT APOCALYPSE IS ON!!!

(giant banner removed out of modesty).
1)you can render much more stuff and still get the same fps.
2)optifine is now useless
3)if you get lag in 1.8 (make shure VBO's are turned on) you eather have a bad pc and/or ancient graphics card.
I see no point in this becoase:
1)we dont nead bigger world, it will kind off useless unless you have a space mod or something(in wich case the mod can make it bigger)
2)minecraft is getting better ovaral graphics,
Conclusion: if you use a Chromebook, then get a mod for this, if you dont you wil be ok.
This might seam like ime beaning a hater, but my conclusion is very logical.

Yeah, nope.
The FPS counter lies to me.
I'm gonna give it a timeout.

May I suggest you read the OP (more than just the title)?
Idiot.
Chunks are not exactly cubic, they are rectangular. Cubic chunks divides those chunks into equal sizes so that the Engine loads chunks close to you.
[P]=Player
[C]=Chunk
Regular chunks:
[C]
[C][C][C] [P]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
Cubic Chunks:
[C]
[C][C] [P]
[C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C][C]
Everything bottom of the player is not rendered until they step into that zone.

Please do not insult other people like that. There's no point in it, and if you've pointed out a mistake they've made, they're probably chiding themselves well enough without your help.
It's also against the rules.

That's not how it works either. Right now one chunk goes all the way down. It's not spit up at all.
These forums are dumb and break my links. I'm bubbleawsome on steam too.
Actually, you're wrong. The Anvil chunk system divides chunks into sixteen 16x16x16 sections. They're not true cubic chunks because they cannot be individually saved (they're still saved as whole chunks, and a lot of code depends on this), but they can be individually loaded to reduce memory usage and reduce lag.
Maybe my specific information is a little bit off (I am downright terrible at explaining things using words), but the point is that the chunks are divided into sub-chunks, but are still saved as whole chunks.
I still don't think that guy had any right to call the other guy an idiot, though.

Your'e right, I was wrong doing that.
But people need to read the 1st post.

I'm no coder or modder or anything, just a player with an idea... Would it be possible to do something like, have a block detect the Sunlight level on its exposed side, then produce Sunlight level -1 underneath it? Have the cube chunk just check the sunlight levels of the 16x16 blocks on the bottom of the chunk above it to continue the sunlight down. If there is no chunk (say due to not have that chunk ever rendered previously, then output a 15 on the top of the rendered chunk. Sure, there might be some issues of a bright chunk suddenly dimming if an island is found above in the future.
To stop that... just have the chunk render sunlight by adding 1 to the sunlight level in cases where the block from the above chunk is air and has a sunlight level. This allows the sunlight to filter down. For example, let's slap a disk of stone in the middle of a chunk blocking all the sunlight. Now lets just run a cross section of the bottom blocks of the chunk.
Sunlight levels:
14 13 12 11 10 09 08 07 07 08 09 10 11 12 13 14
Now, because this bottom row is air, the next chunk down copies those light levels for its top air blocks, adding 1 to the sunlight.
15 14 13 12 11 10 09 08 08 09 10 11 12 13 14 15
And, let's say this chunk is empty, so the bottom blocks of the chunk have the same sunlight levels.. The next chunk down then starts with the following after adding 1 to the sunlight levels.
15 15 14 13 12 11 10 09 09 10 11 12 13 14 15 15
So, now let's say there's the ground floor here. Well, lookie this, there's some shadowing, but none too bad, and the player can look up and lo and behold there's a floating disk.
However, as the chunks between the disk and ground increase, the light levels slowly return to full brightness, leaving the ground having sunlight shine down. The penultimate of this is the further away the floating island, the less shadow it actually casts... and I don't think it would be too much of a draw on resources for the chunk to check blocks in the above chunk --don't blocks already check adjacent blocks for updates?
---------
The only issue I can see with this is underground... But then again, there's already something in Minecraft that states around 64 is the surface because you can see the background turn from blue sky and water above ground to blue sky and black below when underground. So maybe use the +1 per chunk to sunlight when above ground, and just ignore the +1 chunks get when underground to keep sunlight from pouring everywhere?
