I support this idea and have my own idea for a preset sword: Paladin's blade of Smiting. I was thinking it would have smite and (maybe) unbreaking of any level, lower obviously being more common. Gold sword, black dyed hilt, with Redstone insert. If possible it would be great if It only spawned in strongholds.
Alright guys, it's been quite a while since I updated this post, but I've been back on the forums a bit more recently, so I thought I'd respond to everyone I can. The post has been updated a little bit, but most of the main information has stayed the same. On to the quotes.
Another side note, I'm not going to post any more of your legendary sword suggestions just because of the sheer amount that all of you have posted over the months, but keep 'em coming, I love to see the brilliant ideas.
I really like this idea, it's very creative and allows players to create new and interesting swords as opposed to the bland, unforged diamond one.
It also helps with multiplayer, if you want a sword for each individual player, you can name the swords, but also have a desired colour and effect. A suggestion for the glowstone dust variant could be glow in the dark or be able to break glass with the sword and loot it. Just an idea.
Thanks for the constructive comments! MC doesn't currently have the ability to carry light sources with you, which is why I'd rather shy away from that. What do you mean break glass and loot it? I'm trying to get more of a small effect, instead of a total mechanic addition.
We have dyed leather armor so why not swords? Also a great way to show off your wealth. But I think they should just be for the looks, no added effects.

You should be able to select a variety of shapes within the sword. Such as sickles and saw-blade types that would be cool.
Would be pretty cool, though the idea of this was not to change too much about Minecraft, so that it has an easy system to implement and fits right it to the vanilla.
I would like the idea of forged swords, but you're making it way too complicated, so no support. I was thinking along the lines of simply making the swords a different way and maybe dying the hilt. Sorry.

I love this idea, there are a couple mods like this but I want this in vanilla now... and what he means by looting the glass is he wants there to be a slik touch effect on the sword so when you break the glass you actually pick it up
Minecraft does so much with diversifying character skins, I'm always all for another way to be different from the other guy. Could this be done with bows, and armor as well?

Yes, perhaps it is. However we have dyed leather, so I don't see a big difference there. It's just one more step in complexity to customizing an item.
Yeah I agree. Winning a hard-worked-for sword would be a great reward for a PvP type situation.
