So I was playing Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, when I was struck by a simple mechanic that had added so much to the game: elemental effects. Link is affected all the time by the environment he is in, and it actually makes the game feel more immersive in that aspect. When he's on a volcano, you actually feel like he is because he randomly catches fire; on the flip side, he can freeze to death in more frigid conditions.
Why doesn't Minecraft have something similar?
Now, let's look at exactly how that might play out. For starters, it is going to need the creation of a new gamerule:
Gamerule "elementalEffect"
How it functions
- Naturally, the gamerule is set to "true" in survival Minecraft
- When set to "true," elemental effects can actually help/harm the player
- When set to "false," elemental effects do not occur at all
- Allows mapmakers to customize their maps based on whether they want the effect or not, or to change it based on player behavior (difficulty settings?)
Essentially, this will add another component of customization to the game, allowing players to enjoy it how they want, or for mapmakers to create unique maps/puzzles.
But what do these effects do? What do they look like? Well, I'm glad you asked, hypothetical postulater!
Heat-Based Effects
Fire Effect
Not that dissimilar to what we already have. In essence, the player catches fire during certain scenarios:
- When they fall in lava
- If they are within 2 blocks of a lava source block
- If they are in the Nether
Yep, you read that right. If a player so much as enters the Nether without proper equipment, they catch fire!
Overheated Effect
The Overheated effect is a less extreme version of the Fire effect. As a result of it, the player loses hearts at a rate of 1 heart/10 seconds, in half-heart increments. Here is the scenario when this can occur:
- Outside in a desert/mesa biome (no transparent blocks above you)
Yep, just the one case. Now, just as there are scenarios that cause the Fire and Overheated effects to occur, there are also things you can do to stop yourself from being damaged
- Wearing armor with a Frosted enchantment (in desert, mesa, or Nether)
- Dousing yourself with water
- Drinking a Potion of Cooling
- Drinking a bottle of water (Overheated only)
- Placing a non-transparent block above you (in desert or mesa, Overheated only)
What this effectively (hehe, pun) means is that the only way you can go to the Nether without catching fire instantly is wearing armor with a specially new Enchantment: Frosted. We'll get to that later. On to another new Elemental Effect!
Chilled
Being chilled is similar to being overheated: you lose 1hp every 5 seconds, or 1 heart every 10 seconds. Here are the situations which cause it to happen:
- Outside in a Ice Plains, Cold Taiga/Cold Taiga Hills, Frozen River, Cold Beach, Ice Plains Spikes, or Extreme Hills (above elevation 75) with no transparent blocks above you
Like with the other effects, Chilled can be circumvented with some different tactics
- Wearing armor with a Heated enchantment
- Drinking a Potion of Heating
- Placing a non-transparent block above you
Being chilled isn't something that should be too difficult to circumvent, if you're smart enough. But it could catch unwary players off guard. A key thing to point out however: if a player is any water block in the previously-mentioned cold biomes, there is nothing that can circumvent the Chilled effect, and the effect doubles the rate of health loss. In short: don't get caught in water in the cold, otherwise you will die quickly.
Now, on to the last major effect for now!
Conductive
Have you ever been walking out in the middle of a Minecraft thunderstorm, not a care in the world because you have your awesome armor? Well, the conductive effect changes that. It also comes with multiple effects, so here goes:
- Lightning has a much higher rate of striking you while wearing iron, gold, chain, or diamond armor. You will get two sparks, spaced out 3-4 seconds of each other, before the lightning actually strikes.
- Walking over any ores, iron blocks, gold blocks, diamond blocks, minecart rails, iron bars, cauldron, redstone repeaters, anvil, iron/gold pressure plates...you get the idea. Metal-based blocks. Walking over any of those induces a temporary slowness effect. Basically, you're magnetic!
How can this be prevented?
- Wearing leather armor (or going commando)
- Having blocks above you during a lightning storm
This effect I like both the least and the most. On the one hand, it opens up a whole host of puzzle possibilities for map makers. On the other hand...it isn't all that practical or useful in the standard survival Minecraft. Honestly I may just end up deleting it if there's no support for it. But on to other matters!
New Enchantments
Frosted
- Adds a Cooled effect to armor. The Cooled effect is basically harmless, and only serves to offset the Overheated/Fire effect.
- When worn/used in a cold environment, however, the Frosted enchantment can cause more harm than good, making it impossible to get warm again.
Heated
- Adds a Warm effect to armor. Like the Warm effect, Warmed is harmless, and only serves to offset the Chilled effects.
- When worn/used in a warm environment, however, the Heated enchantment prevents the player from ever getting cool, and could cause them to catch Fire if they are already Overheated.
New Potions
Potion of Cooling (3:00)
- Made by adding a slice of watermelon (regular, not the gold kind) to any Awkward potion. Redstone can increase the length of time to 8:00
- Adds a Cool effect to the player
Potion of Heating (3:00)
- Made by adding a turnip to any Awkward potion. Redstone can increase the length of time to 8:00
- Adds a Warm effect to the player
Witches can now throw these potions, which can potentially hurt/help the player based on the environment they are in. Remember: even in a cave, potions can make elemental effects take place!
In any case, that's all I have for now! I'll try to work on adding some things to the thread to make it better-organized. Let me know what you think! It's been a while since I've done this.

Well, props for effort and thinking the whole thing through. However, I'm going to have to go with Minimal Support.
I wasn't even a fan of the environmental effects in BOTW, because they were so easily avoided they felt pointless and annoying, only being there for the sole purpose of adding artificial difficulty and forcefully making you weaker. However, the game was built with those mechanics in mind, so it wasn't a huge issue. Minecraft, on the other hand, is not built with these in mind. Its random nature would make a lot of these mechanics unfair to the player, as well as hurt backwards compatibility. What if I spawned in a cold/hot biome?
There's also the fact that this adds two useless potions and enchantments. Why should I have to waste enchantment levels or materials on something that only has one purpose? Every other enchantment/potion is useful in multiple situations.
Conductive is actually kind of interesting, as it adds a risky, but easy way to have controlled lightning. However, I would say that this is actually too easy, and doesn't make up for the fact that this would be incredibly annoying. Also, random magnetism doesn't make a lot of sense and would be pointless.
Temperature and extreme environmental effects don't work in a game as casual as Minecraft. If Minecraft was a more hardcore survival game, then I might support, but as it is, most players would just be annoyed and angry at the changes.
let be honest, you can't make any sucessful suggestions in this forum, mostly every suggestion is denied by those forum ppl, who have something against cool stuffs in mc. They think that they are super smart with that.4
Welp, you can dream about this idea, they'll not agree with you bcs of ''too op'' or ''lag spike'' or anything else
Yes, you actually can make any successful suggestions in this forum. You just need to make them not to be stupid. And you need to make them somewhat comprehensive and coherent. Not just suggest what has been suggested before, or suggest something, that would be too OP. There's literally dozens of good suggestions here, that's been successful and has dozens, if not hundreds of supporters.
Now that being said, let's jump in a topic in hand: For me, this suggestion has something good, and something bad, but as an overall suggestion, it is well written and coherent, i.e it's easy to understand.
What comes to the suggested effects, you gave simple, but yet sufficient explanations what they are and what they do. (see GHXman? This is how you actually make successful suggestions)
Although, I think, that you shouldn't need the Heated enchantment in cold biomes, if you are using leather armor, but that's just my opinion about it, all in all, like I said, this is well structured and easily understandable suggestion, that has something good, and something bad, the bad would namely be slight annoyance of Fire effect, but even that is good idea in general.
While being somewhat annoying this would bring more challenge to the game, and it would also make players think twice about their tactics. Unfortunately, there's cases where this is plain dumb, as sometimes you spawn in these cold or hot biomes (minus the Nether, of course), and you won't have zero protection from these effects, which can of course be negated by jumping in the nearest cave. But the main good thing is, that you can turn it off, if you so desire, points to you from that one.
But I have to ask you one thing: What about Jungles? They are hot biomes as well. And humid, mind you...
All in all, I give you partial support for now, as I am interested to see where this is going.

There have been plenty of successful, well thought-out suggestions on the forums. Take a look at Cubic Chunks—it's one of the most popular ideas ever on the forums, can't be overpowered (because how could going up on a mountain be overpowered?) and would actually solve lag issues.
As for the actual suggestion, I'm mostly with jdc997.

I actually did not think about the whole spawning in a cold/hot biome; most of the time I think players normally spawn in a forest or plain. I'm not sure there's really a way to address that, other than changing what biomes players can spawn in (something which I think already exists, because I've never spawned in an ocean before).
Yeah, the potions are relatively useless atm. I'm working on an idea for how they can have multiple uses beyond just the weather.
As for conductive...I have some ideas I'm fleshing out with it. We'll see. I'm still not entirely sure I want to keep it at all.
But seriously, thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it.
