With new birds in Minecraft I was thinking it would be nice if we could control them from a 1st person perspective. This could be by using some new item/totem. Think of it as a voodoo doll, but 1st control.
While you have control of this mob you (Steve) will not move and can be attacked. While using the mob control the durability of the "doll" will go down, perhaps giving you about 30 seconds of control, then will disappear from inventory. Unbreaking will increase the time allowed, but would need to be achieved by book (think elytra for enchantments)
So upsides to this item would be:
Surveillance, easier mob control, and ability to
view structures from New perspective without Elytra
Downsides:
Unable to move while in use making you vulnerable, inability to attack while using (including as the mob) and people wanting to tame you as a pet 😣
If this isn't added to the game, I would like to at least see a mod with this feature. I mean Mojang added spectating as mobs possible, so I only feel this to be the next step and more now than ever with parrots.
I really like this idea of a "voodoo doll". Normally I would say something this big would require a ton of time, but I think this feature would be worth it. As for obtaining the voodoo doll, were you thinking of a crafting recipe, a mob drop, etc? Here's an idea I had for crafting a voodoo doll...
(Imagine the Steve head is a Totem of Undying. The generator I use doesn't have them )
Lastly, do you think you should be able to repair Voodoo Dolls? If so, what material would you repair it with?

Sounds good, but might not be suitable for vanilla, might be better for a mod.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
The concept of this seems pretty nice, despite the lack of some details like the crafting recipe and some other stuff, it seems like something that will give the Parrot some use, In my opinion the crafting recipe for this item should be somewhat cheap since "30 seconds and then it's gone" seems fit for a somewhat cheap item.
(By somewhat cheap I mean it isn't something easily crafted in bulk but can be created with effort.)
Also PlanetJupiderp, I don't think that crafting recipe is really good, it requires 2 late game items which are expensive so the item is a waste and it basically kills the suggestion in a way, but even if you add the ability to repair it, the item is somewhat useless by this point due to the fact that most people's bases will be super secure and just invading them normally would be the way to go.
Come to think of it, the whole base spying thing is kinda impractical, but in certain situations with this parrot spy, it could be useful, such as some sort of airlock that sends out your parrot out to see the outside while you are safe in your humble bunker, or something like that.
Also, will the parrot come to you after the time on the item is up? Will it go back the way it came in the exact fashion it came in? What if it's path is blocked?
As for things to add to this suggestion, maybe while in this mode your hotbar is temporarily replaced with a set of actions for the parrot, like picking things up or a peck attack, or maybe even intimidating mob sounds to scare other players (Or villagers by making zombie sounds.)
I might come back here for another idea I had but I am not gonna post it because this post is already lengthy, but I will leave saying this:
Only let parrots have this, it makes them useful while bats are just atmospheric mobs and should not given a use or be able to be tamed. (At least in my eyes.)
I like the concept and I think Scorpion makes a lot of good points to improving it. I would say it should only be parrots and the recipe should be cheaper. I want to say potion effect for this but it seems a bit specific and lacks any real "corrupted" version. I can see a couple of uses for this, like scouting a ravine or cave for good ore without having to go down myself.

I'm not sure how to craft the voodoo doll, but another idea I had was to maybe use gold on the cookie and go the way of Zelda Wind Waker, but instead of putting fruit on your head you feed it to the parrot. If just controlling the parrot I think a golden cookie would be fine.
As of attacks, my original idea was to not have any attacks. If you can attack with your parrot or another mob that might make things a bit too complex.
An inventory of 1 slot might be a nice feature though. Useful for sending messages and items, but no using of the items. Perhaps pulling levers and hitting buttons though.
As for how the bird will get back once time is up? I figured I let the current mob ai take care of that. If out of range I assume you wouldn't get your bird back until you get in range.

Eh, whatever works, I also had an idea of having parrots have this ability without the use of an item.
IMO adding attacks wouldn't make things complex but it's your suggestion.
I would prefer you could place things down like redstone and normal torches, since it would make for a great puzzle map and the parrot could activate traps and stuff.

I didn't even think about how useful this would be in map making and puzzle solving. It'd be like playing a 2 player map with, but you control both players.
Perhaps the parrots could be controlled using cookies/golden cookies, but I think mob control could also be implemented using a voodoo doll. It would be a 2 tier system.
Another idea is to make mob control only possible on the mob assigned to that doll. So you get a blank voodoo doll, right click the mob with it and the voodoo doll gets the mob's id written to it and gets an enchanted effect. When this happens to a mob the NoAI tag is set to true and any current actions are cancelled (creeper explosion, skeleton shooting, etc). On top of that the mob should then become persistent.
Maybe you could attack with voodoo doll, but I don't think cookie parrot control should have attacks. In fact no passive mob should be able to attack since they never could attack before.
I would love to see a mob with this idea. I'm sure theres more details to iron out such as distance of control and how to/if to have the abilities of that mob. I don't think these controlled mobs should be able to breed if you were thinking that. Also what mobs should be exempt from mob control, obviously the dragon and wither shouldn't be controlled, but what other mobs?
I like this idea and think it is balanced out really well, you haven't given a crafting recipe and I think the one that PlanetJupiderp mad seemed a bit too impractical. I like how you can't endless;y control it so it won't become to op.

You can do alot in 30 seconds, but I assume map makers could increase the cooldown via command blocks, even to the point where it's infinite.
The time was the reason I was thinking it would make a good potion. 30 seconds by default, the extended goes to 180 or something like that. Maybe if there was a level 1 and 2 potion the level 1 could be basic flight and level 2 could have some abilities, like being able to hold 1 stack of items and be able to place then (automatically taking whatever is in the player's off hand maybe).

I'm not sure how a potion would work. Do you give it to the mob you are controlling? Do you splash it on them? Or you drink it and it gives you the ability of control when you right click the mob?
I feel potion might not fit mainly because potions are more for buffs/debuffs.
Feed this to Parrot. Controls Parrots for 30 seconds. Parrot is able to carry 1 stack of items during this and can also drop the item. Not sure if can place blocks, you tell me, personally I feel that they shouldn't be able to.
(Pretend Gold Armor is Totem of Undying)
Hold in off-hand when killing a mob. The mob comes back to life with no AI and 3 hearts health. The Voodoo Totem becomes linked to that mob and allows for unlimited control of that mob or until durability runs out. It won't matter where you are in the map you will have control of this mob. Place him in your base maybe to put stuff in your ender chest while you are out adventuring? Have him wield a sword and face the Wither(and probably die). Only Hostile mobs will have attacks and no special abilities such as creeper blowing up or enderman teleportation or spider climbing walls. Not sure if you should get the totem back if the mob dies or get totem of undying back or just lose it altogether and have to find another totem of undying to make another.
PS 1.12 The Parrots and the Bats Advancement???? I doubt Mojang looked at my post, but I like to think they did.

I like this idea! I think you should use a normal totem of undying and maybe let your hotbar be replaced with actions like peck, a bit like when you press a hotbar key in spectator mode!
100% support
I also think it would be a really unique idea, a way to control a mob (even if its just a parrot) is something that would be both useful and fun.

Using the hotbar to control mob behavior might be good. I do feel it may be overpowered but it would be an end game item.
I would still add an early game parrot control, my original idea was there was no good way to look at your builds from above without building towers or flying, both aren't ideal for getting a good detailed look at things.
Though to be honest I been wanting some type of mob control since the day mob disguise mod came out. I believe Minecraft had matured enough since those days that it wouldn't be too difficult to implement this feature and make it balanced and fair at the same time.

Okay since cookies kill birds now and we don't want people imitating Minecraft in real life and feeding their pets chocolate, I'm scraping the golden cookie idea. In fact I think to control parrots we should just use bread.
Yes I'm aware bread is easy to get, but why not make it something easy to get. Controlling a parrot without any attacks is not really an OP thing. Birds also like bread and it'll be a reference to Zelda Wind Waker.
I would still want to keep the idea of a voodoo doll for controlling other mobs and feel this item would be a bit more OP. Still need ideas for the voodoo doll crafting recipe. I feel some of the recipes are too hard. I feel the spectator mode of a mob's view is wasted and never is used. Talk about most unused features of Minecraft.
Anyways I hope this idea gets at the very least a mod, though I feel it would fit in modern day Minecraft as well.
