The Nitwit villager currently has no purpose. I think that when right clicked, a message on the screen should say something that you shouldn't do like say,"I hear that digging straight down is a good idea!" To make it that new users are not fooled, rarely other villagers should say," I don't trust that villager in green, he seems not to know what he's doing." By doing the opposite of what the Nitwit says, new players might learn a ton. The messages display the same way that a message like 'you can't sleep at day' displays.
EDIT:
They now will make you think: Looking at that nitwit, a thought comes to your head;'insert text here'.
Examples of text:
That orange water looks fun to swim in!
Those blue rocks seem dangerous!
It might be nice to push my friends off cliffs!
I should punch people with swords as fast as I can!
This is a pretty clever idea, using reverse thinking to guide players, but...it feels a little out of place to me, like, there's no other dialogue in Minecraft, or indication that they speak English, or can even speak at all.

This is a good point. Maybe Nitwits sell books that say all this "advice" and the Librarians trade a renamed paper called "Don't trust Nitwit"?
That'd make more sense, since the villagers would be trying to communicate directly with the player to warn them.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
2. This would likely get old really fast. Unless you have a thousand lines or so of dialogue, you're just going to have a "Welcome to Corneria" problem.
Isn't Nitwit a community term though, because he doesn't have any trades? Pretty sure the Mojang staff don't actually call them Nitwits, or were planning to name them Nitwits.
Actually, it's an official term. In the snapshot they were added, when you could look into their trading GUI they were called "Nitwit".
The Nitwit being the only NPC Villager "bright enough" to actually know how to talk, while the other NPC Villagers only use an iconic interface for their interactions with players. Yeah right like that would work.
Minecraft is purposefully a text-lightweight game.
No dialogues (or monologues). This would interfere a lot with the ease with which Minecraft is currently internationalized in tonsof different languages.

This pretty much wraps it up. After a while, you just got pointless not-really-fitting text that's essentially just a joke that will get old.

The green people would make good friends!
I might save money if i trade with villagers.

That's a good suggestion. I didn't even know that Nitwits existed in the first place. Support
ehh, needs immortality! and follow the player everywhere! also give him an ability similar to a creeper and the ability to burn wood!
don't listen to me, i don't know anything.
i sort of like this idea though, it would be a nice funny, tiny addition to the game XD
soooo, support!
Typed by hand!
He's called "Nitwit," why not give it a reason? I support this.

Okay idea, but I think Minecraft shouldn't have dialogue of any kind. Even if it's just text.
It sounds kind of funny, but there's two issues:
1. Minecraft and dialogue don't really mesh.
2. This would likely get old really fast. Unless you have a thousand lines or so of dialogue, you're just going to have a "Welcome to Corneria" problem.
Unfortunately, I cannot give this my support.
If you are planning to make a suggestion, please read this.
If you want to know more, you can read this.
For those who complain about post-Beta generation, you might want to see this.
Seems like a good idea, considering that he is literally a "Nitwit".
Support.

In addition to bad advice, they can also say random, strange things.
"Green brings out my eyes!"
"Are there any short Endermen?"
"I'll trade with you later."
Or maybe pull one of those title screen phrases.
*right click*
"The creeper is a spy!"
Actually, was looking at the list of splash text to pick from, and that list is already
so long and so very random, you might not need to add more.
Anyway, SUPPORT.
Full support, would love to see Nitwits offering me bad advice.
Maybe it should say, "Looking at this nitwit, a strange thought enters your head; [insert X here]"
This pretty much wraps it up. After a while, you just got pointless not-really-fitting text that's essentially just a joke that will get old.
I like the idea. more quotes please.
BA
That is a great idea.
neh...
I edited the suggestion, it might be better now.
What a good-hearted villager. The quotes are clever and all, but still, "dialogue" in this game just doesn't fit very well.
I added a few pictures of nitwits.
