Intro: A long time it has been indeed... Well, I am back again with another suggestion! I posted this on reddit, but it didn't receive a lot of feedback, so I am posting it here, with some other info. Now that that's out of the way, I present to you an item suggestion that I have been thinking about since the release of 16w50a, which brought us iron nuggets: the Sifter.
The Sifter, and how to sift: The Sifter would be a new item with durability (about as much as a wooden pickaxe, also has the same amount of uses as a wooden pickaxe) that would be a new and original "treasure finder". By that I mean it is used to "sift" through sand (regular sand and red sand), dirt, or gravel to find various items, such as gold and iron nuggets. It is not able to be placed and can be used in either hand by right clicking sand, dirt, or gravel that is next to or under water. I will explain more
about this later.
Sifting: Once the sifter has been right clicked on a valid block, it will take a few seconds (2-5) and make a sifting/rummaging sound. Then, the block you sifted will disappear, and, by chance, it will pop an item/items into your hot bar or inventory. I will explain what items the sifter can get you later. If any slots in your hot bar are empty, the sifter will pop the items it gets into those empty spaces in your hot bar. If there are no empty spaces in your hot bar but there are empty spaces in your inventory, the sifter will put the items it gets there (it works like this vice versa too). If your inventory and hot bar are completely full, the items the sifter gets will drop to the ground infront of you.
Sift able items: There is a 85% chance you will get at least 1 item every time you sift. The sifter looses 1 durability for each item it gets while sifting, and looses 1 durability each time it is used (so there is a varying amount of durability the sifter looses each time it is used). Here are all of the items the sifter can get and your chances of getting them:
•Iron nugget, 0-3 per sift, 40% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from sand/gravel
•Golden nugget, 0-3 per sift, 20% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from sand/gravel
•Bone, 0-2 per sift, 40% chance of getting each time you sift
•Stick, 0-5 per sift, 50% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from dirt/gravel
•Flint, 0-2 per sift, 20% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from gravel
•Pebble (new item), 0-4 per sift, 50% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from dirt/gravel
•Diamond nugget (new item), 0-1 per sift, 3% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from sand/gravel
•Prismarine crystals, 0-3 per sift, 10% chance of getting every time you sift, most likely to get from gravel
•Seeds (any kind), 0-4 per sift, 45% chance of getting each time you sift, most likely to get from dirt
Any more items that you want the sifter to be able to get? Suggest them in the comments.
New items: item 1: Pebble: used with flint to craft gravel (8 pebbles surrounding 1 flint=1 gravel block), 9 pebbles in a crafting table gives you one block of cobblestone, possibly able to be thrown (?) and gives 2 hearts of damage. Picture in attachments.
Item 2: Diamond nugget (credit to TeamWoofel for idea): Like golden and iron nuggets, 9 diamond nuggets=1 diamond, smelting diamond armor/tools/weapons gives 1 diamond nugget (to line up with irpn/golden nuggets). Picture in attachments.
Other info:possible texture (ignore the crafting recipe in that picture), Crafting recipe for the sifter: blank, blank, blank (top row), stick, string, stick (middle row), leather, stick, leather (bottom row). The sifter can be repaired with leather. It is found in the tools tab in the creative inventory. Here's the suggestion on reddit:
TL;DR: A new treasure finding item that "sifts" through specific blocks to find many different items like iron/gold nuggets, and other things.
Support and comments: That's about it. Hope you like it. Please like and support if you do like it and feel free to comment your suggestions for this idea in the comment section below. I am putting up a poll for you guys and gals to vote on whether you like this idea or not, so use that too! Also, please say in the comments if you like this suggestion or not, and say any constructive criticism that you may have.
This is interesting, it's sort of like the mod Ex Nihilo. When I first saw this thread I thought that it would be too OP, but then I saw that you would give it the durability of a wooden tool and then I thought harder about it.
The only problem I see is that although this mechanic is neat, it's not really needed because you could get 10x the amount of ore from the same time spent mining than sifting, so I don't see a point. The mod Ex Nihilo is only in mod packs were ores don't generate naturally, so this sifter doesn't seem like it is necessary.
If this were implemented however, I think you should consider re-balancing those drop rates to be more similar to Ex Nihilo. You gave diamonds a 5% drop rate, whereas in Ex Nihilo the drop rate for diamonds is 1%.
How would this sifter be crafted? How many uses does it have before it breaks?
Pretty cool idea but it seems a bit OP as is... maybe reduce the rate of success further or make the sifter have low durability?
Support with modification
The way to craft the sifter is in the other info section, but I will tell you here: top row of crafting table: all blank, middle row: stick, string, stick, bottom row: leather, stick, leather. It has the same durability and same number of uses as a wooden pickaxe (that is in the second section).
As for the sifter being OP, do you mean all of the success rates for all of the sift able items? Because many of those items are just almost useless things like sticks and bones. I will modify the success rate of diamonds though. That was a little OP. Thanks for the feed back!

Thanks for the feedback! I actually didn't mean for this suggestion to be similar to Ex Nihlio, as I didn't know much about it when I made the suggestion on reddit. I got a similar comment to yours on reddit too. I changed the drop rate of diamonds from 5% to 2.5%. Please reply if you think I should change that drop rate again. As for getting 10 times the amount of ore from mining, the sifter is not just for getting stuff that you could easily get from mining, but also helps in getting other things, like bones for example, which you would normally have to fight skeletons for. Also, the sifter would be handy for anyone who is such in a world with few caves, or small caves.
This is an interesting idea, very original and balanced, however I don't like the ability of obtain diamonds by sifting.
I mean, the impact of such diamond obtaining is big (you will obtain 1 diamonds by each 30 siftings (1,5 * 2,5%), by average), it could be a fast and cheap way for obtain diamonds (supposing that such process is fast), mostly on servers.
Although durability of sifter is as wood (60 uses) stay being a cheap way for obtain diamonds, you will obtain 2 diamonds by sifter (in average).
In the other hand, sifter is relatively cheap (if the tool recipe is compared with its ability for obtain diamonds), and prima materials, sand, ground and gravel, are very abundant.
Then, such ability of obtain diamonds by sifting is unbalanced or overpowered, and chances of obtain these should be nerfed more yet or even removed.
Mainly support.
Thanks for your support and feedback! I do understand that the sifter is relatively cheap and is op in the sense that it can get something so expensive when it is so cheap. Do you have any suggestions that would make it better? I don't want to necessarily remove diamonds being sift able, but I could probably lower the rate of getting them to 1% or even 0.5% I don't know about the recipe though. Any ideas?
EDIT/UPDATE: The rate of getting diamonds has been lowered to 1% (for now).

If 'diamond chips' were a thing (and with MC who knows, you can already do some impossible stuff) then I could see being able to get them from a sifter at a relatively high rate (5% or so)

Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.

And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.

Either diamond chips or diamond dust... or diamond nuggets. 4 of them could make 1 diamond? Or 9 so it matches with gold and iron nuggets. I will think about it.
EDIT: I have decided to remove diamonds and replace them with diamond ___ (probably diamond nuggets) with credit to you for the idea.

Update: more pics and a new item: the diamond nugget, which will be a sift able item in the place of actual diamonds. Also, there is a minor change (mostly because I mixed up 2 items): prismarine crystals are taking the place of prismarine shards. I could have prismarine shards as another rarer siftable item, but I will leave that to you. So keep posting!
