This would actually be really annoying to build with. Imagine building an obsidian archway with lava flowing over it, that suddenly starts slowly metling because you chose lava waterfalls instead of regular water. No support, sorry... This concept has potential, but it shouldn't happen in the world, that'd just be too much of a nuisance.
It only works with lava source blocks, not flowing lava
Another huge issue with this suggestion - why does lava melt the hardest, toughest (minable) block in the game but not ordinary stone or even dirt (or even a block like wool, which currently only burns if there is an adjacent air block)? Or does the entire underground below y=11 turn into lava over time (I recall a suggestion that would cause just that to happen)?
Maybe make it so that you need say, FOUR lava source blocks in order to melt obsidian, then you pretty much have to artificially arrange them for it to work. And remove the part about setting entities on fire if it is touching only one lava source block (and again, why only obsidian? Fire spread also already ignores any blocks in the way; I've had crafting tables burst into flame after placing them down on a former lava lake with no exposed lava in sight).
PS: using water to prevent lava from melting obsidian won't work in the Nether (see gonzoxl5's post) since you can't place water in the Nether...
Well, melting point and toughness are completely unrelated. Ceramic takes forever to melt, and aluminum takes seconds to melt. Realism isn'the really the premise of this thread, recycling is.
Four source blocks would work to fix the whole obsidian bunker melter thing..I'll chanel the OP.
The whole fiery obsidian thing was kinda an afterthought, and it doesn't really make sense, like you said. It would make sense with iron or gold, but it is probably best I remove it.
Got to do it when I get home though, formatting is hard on mobile.
personally I preferred the original idea were it only took 2 lava blocks and hot obsidian burnt your feet(you should have a poll for that)
Ok, I tweaked it a little bit, so that it glows and looks cool with one lava source block, sets fire to mobs with 2+ source blocks, and melts into lava at four source blocks.
The Four lava source blocks if there for a reason though, as it prevents some levels of greifing, especially with obsidian bunkers in the nether.

Cool idea, but as others have said i think it may get in the way with a few of my builds, and it could potentially make lava an infinite renewable resource due to nether portals being able to generate extra blocks of obsidian.
I like the concept, its very creative and I totally see your thoughts through it, but no support...
No support, this would be INCREDIBLY annoying since I'd have to constantly flood lava back into obsidian; did you know that in one of my worlds there are a third of a million blocks of obsidian largely as a result of me flooding lava in caves? About as bad as suggesting that torches burn out over time (try relighting a quarter-million torches, yeah, right!).
Lava is basically infinite anyway, as evidenced by my mentioning that I converted a third of a million lava into obsidian (that's an area 577 blocks on a side, and not considering that lava pools are up to 10 blocks deep, and many are not exposed, and then there is the Nether). This could also be used for griefing; so much for the obsidian base you built to prevent griefing...
Well anyway, it is easy enough to mod the game to remove the code or I can just play on an older version (as I already do) so I don't really mind either way, but I'm sure many others would have to agree with me.

There is a way to help prevent griefing if this was added...
Look at my screenshots. They show the progress of building and the hidden obsidian which is hidden in between the walls, and underground.

That was only secondary to the problem of this, just a tiny fraction of one of my worlds (the one with a third of a million obsidian at y=10 according to an MCEdit analysis; my signature includes maps to give you an idea of the full scale):

I'm a bit surprised that how much I cave still surprises people; here is another map, 1014x541 blocks (pixels), of the same general area, showing all caves below sea level - most of which have been explored; the entire world is about 5,000 blocks north-south:
(the seed is -123775873255737467 in 1.6.4 or earlier; spawn is right near the yellow player marker near the left side; this shows exactly why there were many complaints about "Swiss cheese" underground, and the frequency of mineshafts is much higher further away from spawn... in the area shown on the map you can expect an average of 21 mineshafts (beyond 80 chunks from the origin), as well as 43 ravines and about 1,000 individual caves)

This sounds to me more like a recipe for two reasons.
1) In a recipe, it prevents all guess work as to whether it can be used to grief, with the fact people don't have to rethink builds that no one may have even thought of or brought up.
2) The main reason If you're going to go through the trouble of moving lava from one spot to another to melt the obsidian... why don't you just replace the lava with the lava you ran to get? You're putting in way to much work the other way. I mean, this is for accidental purposes, right? I mean why would you purposely turn it to obsidian, just to unturn it? If its bigger than four blocks, go to the Nether. It has huge lava lakes to take from, replace the lava blocks you took with nether blocks. It won't even make a dent. Again, this is for accidental purposes I assume.
No Support.
Make it a mod, or for specific mods that use lava for, like, I dunno, power sources (hehe) to take advantage of recipes? Sure. I see total use of it.
I think making lava renewable is a bad thing,
and I am sure someone somehow would find out how to make a fully afk-able lava farm using the obsidian platform that you spawn on in the end.
and also like someone mentioned before it could in some ways ruin factions...
But other then that

This seems kinda redundant. Why would you need the lava when you already have 6 buckets worth? What?
Sorry but...
