I kind of like this idea. But the flare should burn out after about 5 minutes real time.

That's a suggestion, not a reason to not fully support an idea.
It burning out after 5 minutes real time is just as bad as normal torches burning out 5 minutes real time.

This idea is pretty good, but I'm not sure it would fulfill it's purpose.
It's supposed to alert players of your position from a distance, correct?
Well, generally speaking, a lot of light won't render from a distance to my knowledge, or if it does, it would be difficult to see, effectively ruining the point of this.
Weren't redstone torches a shapeless recipe? If that's the case, they might conflict with this recipes.
Apart from that, there really isn't anything I can say against this idea. Support.
Ehh... Redstone torches use a stick and a piece of dust. This one uses a torch and dust.
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
I don't see a problem with this suggestion. It's pretty interesting to have, but I'm not sure the reason of having it alert players or having it a large distraction for any particular reason would be a good one. Perhaps if it provide a useful use for players, because this suggestion has some potential to be used more than once.

It's a clever idea, handy when you're trying to find a friend or something. But as megabyte said; the rendering might 'render' it useless (see what I did there?)
I'm 50/50 on this.

Hi.
I would like to propose a simple idea I had for Minecraft: A red flare.
The flare would be crafted like this:
The flare could be thrown down (or placed, rather) and emit a bright, red light.
This could be used to alert other players of your presence, or to remember a spot for whatever reason.
The flare would burn out after roughly 15 minutes (real time) and disappear after five or so minutes of being burned out.
What do you think? Could this be a nice, simple item you'd like to see in Minecraft?
I kind of like this idea. But the flare should burn out after about 5 minutes real time.
