Thinking about possibly adding some new stuff.(specifically turning powered rails, detector rails, etc) The problem is that it may be unrelated to the original thread, which is on specifically Crossrails.
I like it. You can edit the title and the OP to be about new rails in general without it being a wishlist, as they are all related. I'd say go for it and make so there are 3 rail types. Straight Rails, Corner Rails, and Cross Rails.
Straight Rails behave exactly like the current rails, except they never, ever curve. North - South or East - West, and can slope. That is it.
Corner Rails (I'd say for a crafting recipe 3 rails in any L shape and they give you 3 Corner Rails) cannot be placed on slopes. They obviously only turn 90 degrees. They basically work exactly like current corners do, including that you can ride into them from the sides that are not connected for 1 way rails.
Cross Rails are exactly as described here.
All special rails like Powered or Activated can be done with data values within the blocks or with their own block versions. This would make so people need to craft a little more, but would make ultracompact rail designs much easier and make rail systems better in general.

I don't think a lot of people would like corner rails, since it's just more crafting. But all ideas are considered, and I plan on adding more content to this idea.
Since this idea's becoming well liked, I think I may make a banner for it, just for fun.

Why can't corner rails just be placed down next to two rails, and have it turned into a corner rail?
Because corner rails as they exist right now can be buggy. Sometimes they connect to the wrong thing or they will change connections or they just act funny in general, this is all due to the code in Rails that tells it to autoconnect to things near it. If you have dedicated corner rails and get rid of all of the autoconnect logic it will fix some issues with rails not working correctly, especially in tightly closed areas. Corner stairs have similar problems because of their autoconnect code.

I like the idea except for one thing - the concept art is a little wrong The cross rails should have gaps in the rails for train to pass in any of the directions. Other than the nitpicky comment, I like it a lot.
It's a bit hard to make a good looking texture when you only have 16 pixels in width to work with. I did my best on it, but I'm no professional texturer.
I would've done it, but it would've looked just like yours.
Yeah.

Support, but I think only the normal rails should be able to cross because only they're able to turn. I don't mind of it's different though, I just want this in game.
I want crossrails to be as functional as possible, so making variants of it for all kinds of rails is a pretty good idea.

I'm more inclined to agree with TheWitherMan, seeing as how it would be a trivial task to place your special track pieces elsewhere other than the cross, and Mojang seems to have a surprisingly high amount of difficulty adding simple blocks, so it's probably a lot easier on all of us to just ask for the basic cross-rail. But I certainly won't complain if there are more.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).

The "sharp corner rails" badprenup suggested aren't in yet, I'm still thinking about it.

I know, I was just wondering why it was a crafting recipe.
A lot of feedback on the poll. Thanks!

I'm personally a fan of the textures (in response to people talking about the textures)
I think they look pretty nice, even if they could be better.

This is AWESOME I hate having to find a way to cross my rails. This would be PERFECT for rollercoasters and stuff like that. Instant support
I don't even play Minecraft much anymore yet here I am on the Minecraft forums for some reason...

Support.
now i wonder how would it work by rails going up or down
Support, but, you might want to rethink on how the rails work
When a minecart went the cross rails, where will it go ? Foward ? left ? right ? and you might end up making a hard time on your self xD
See : ACtennisAC rail track change
but still 100% support
Ah, i want to milk some cow, maybe gonna snatch the princess later o3o
I got 99 trouble, and you wont be one of them .
I would guess it would just keep on going the direction it was going already, just passing it by like a normal rail. All it is is an intersection.
so by that do you mean straight from the direction? if so, fair enuf, if not, meh nvm x.x

Let's say this + is a crossrail.
If a cart it coming from the right, it will continue going right: ---+---
If a cart is coming from the bottom, it will keep on going up:
