My suggestion to add to Minecraft is to add shields into the game. There has probably been a lot of shield threads, varying in complexity from too complicated to simply too simple, but I believe I have a fresh take on how to add shields to Minecraft. Firstly, you must craft the shield - simple enough. After you have finished crafting it, you can simply use the shield by itself by holding right click, creating a stronger version of the Sword's block, but the main feature is that shields can be placed into a new item slot, placed directly to the left of the chestplate, called the 'back' slot. By itself, the shield does nothing but look nice, but when a sword is drawn, the shield is also drawn, providing both a stronger block and some unique bonuses for each shield as well as providing additional armor when blocking.
Blocking Changes:
Blocking would have the same basic concept - hold down right click to prevent some of the incoming damage. However, it would no longer be a constant 50% block using a wooden and a diamond sword - instead, I believe that blocking should prevent a much smaller percentage of damage, with a very slight increase per tier of weapon. Wooden would start out at only 15% damage reduction, stone at 18%, iron 21% and diamond at 25%. Furthermore, blocking with a shield temporarily adds armor value to a person.
However, to counteract this reduction in blocked damage, I would suggest implementing the ability to parry - left clicking while blocking just as an enemy swings at you, and also prevent the offender from attacking for a short amount of time - about a quarter of a second. They can still block themselves, however. I believe that this would help to add more of a strategic element to combat, while still keeping the game simple. You can still hold down block and prevent damage, but if you manage to parry an opponent's blow perfectly you are rewarded with the chance to attack them. This would make battles go back and forth, relying on timing - quite like how you need to quickly jump in and out of combat with blocking now, but further capturing this style of gameplay and fleshing it out. One last feature of parrying is that a successful parry does a small amount of damage to an opponent's weapon - equal to five durability. Parrying can only be done if you have not taken damage in the last 0.5 seconds, to prevent an infinite chain.
More Details:
There would be six tiers of shields - Wood, Stone, Gold, Iron and Diamond.
Wood shields block an additional 10% of damage, and add half an armor value. They have low but not a pathetic durability of 152, and are very light, so movement speed while blocking is only lowered by a small amount. When parrying with a wooden shield (or sword), both have a chance to splinter, randomly dealing 1 hearts worth of damage to either player with a 50% chance for each - both can be hit. However, wooden shields are very susceptible to fire, and thus blocking a fire ability with them causes the shield to burn, constantly loosing durability until combat ends. Wooden shields also collect arrows that hit the shield and give them to the person blocking as arrows become embedded in the wood - this doesn't block arrows, but allows you to 'steal' ammo by acting as a bullet - sorry, arrow sponge. It is crafted like so:
Plank / Plank / Plank
Stick / Log / Stick
Plank / Plank / Plank
Stone shields block an additional 15% damage, and add one armor value. They have a reasonable durability of 376, but are rather heavy, so movement speed is decreased by a larger amount when blocking with one. Parrying with a stone shield knocks the opponent back slightly, as well as stunning them for a longer duration due to the impact behind being hit with a solid wall of stone. Stone shields are resistant to fire, but don't grant any additional protection from it. It is crafted:
Cobblestone / Cobblestone / Cobblestone
Stick / Stone / Stick
Cobblestone / Cobblestone / Cobblestone
Gold shields are very weak, adding a measly 5% damage protection when blocking and with a tiny durability of 52. However, they can very easily be enchanted and increase the effectiveness of enchantments on the item by 25%, making them useful for specific purposes but very weak in normal combat due to their small durability - unless you get unbreaking on them... They are also reasonably light, slightly decreasing movement speed. Gold shields are crafted:
Gold Ingot / Gold Ingot / Gold Ingot
Stick / Emerald / Stick
Gold Ingot / Gold Ingot / Gold Ingot
Iron shields are a simple step up from Stone, granting one and a half armor points with a 20% additional block and a durability of 824, but are incredibly heavy, greatly decreasing movement speed when used. When parrying with an iron shield, an opponent will, rather than merely have their weapon disabled, be completely stunned for a short amount of time. The limitation on this is that you must recover after quickly moving the shield, so you are prevented from attacking for half the stun time, allowing for one hit only, or a quick potion drink. Iron shields are crafted:
Iron Ingot / Iron Ingot / Iron Ingot
Stick / Gold Ingot / Stick
Iron Ingot / Iron Ingot / Iron Ingot
Diamond shields are another step up from Iron, with 30% block ontop of the sword's block and a durability of 2168. They are slightly lighter than iron, but still impose a large movement penalty. They add two armor points when blocking. Diamond shields reflect light, meaning mobs hiding in the shade can be burnt by blocking at them from outside of the shade if you block continuously at them for 3 seconds. This does nothing to mobs not normally burnt in daylight. This does nothing to players. This makes Diamond shields good for PVE, but Gold or Iron better in PVP. It is crafted like so:
Diamond / Diamond / Diamond
Stick / Glowstone / Stick
Diamond / Diamond / Diamond
Additionally, other items may be placed within this slot to be wielded on an offhand. Torches can be placed into the slot, so that when a pickaxe is drawn, the currently useless right-click will instead place a torch! Seeds can be placed into it so that right-clicking with a hoe will instantly till and plant, and banners can be placed into the slot to be wielded instead of a shield. Banners provide a small bonus to friendly entities, including players on the same team via scoreboard, which is the same as their enchantment they have on them. Banners can be placed onto the ground by right-click, and picked up by any player with an empty offhand slot on the same team, which strengthens the enchantments but can't be moved while placed. Finally, quivers (made from leather in a U-shape, a sword material (wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond) in the center and an arrow on top) can store arrows for use with a bow without taking up an inventory slot. Wood can store 16, stone and gold 32, iron 48 and diamond 64 arrows. Each upgrade increases bow damage by 5%, up to 20% at diamond.
Enchantments:
Shields:
Bulwark (I): Any arrows launched from a non-infinity bow, after dealing their damage, are now placed on the ground in front of you to be picked up. When placed on a wooden shield, this allows for infinity-launched arrows to be collected at a 10% chance.
Mirror (I, II, III): Projectile attacks have their damage reduced by 10 x level %, up to a cap of 35%, and reflect back at their sender at a speed and damage equal to 20 x level%.
Protection: See armor.
Spiked Shell (I, II, III): Shield parries reflect 5 x level % of incoming damage before armor is taken into account.
Unrelenting (I, II, III): Movement speed is (after taking into account the total reduction) increased by level x 10 %.
Flawless (I): The shield is perfect, improving every aspect it very slightly (level x 3 %)
Huge Blow (I): Make parries prevent the opponent attacking for a total of 0.5 seconds, rather than 0.25. Especially important on Iron shields.
Unbreaking: See armor.
Banners:
Battlerage (I-III): (Level x 3 %) additional damage. Increased to (level x 5 %) when placed.
Discipline (I-III): (Level x 3 %) additional protection. Increased to (level x 5 %) when placed.
March (I-III): (Level x 3 %) additional speed. Increased to (level x 5 %) when placed.
Inspiration (I-III): (Level x 5 %) additional health regeneration. Increased to (level x 10 %) when placed.

Thank you for reading my suggestion! Any and all criticism is accepted and encouraged. Please tell me how you feel about the idea, and if you are going to or not going to support it, why you chose to. Don't forget to comment, and please follow the thread if you think this is a good idea! I'm sorry about the lack of images, but... well, let's just say I'm not very good at art? Sounds about right. Anyways, shields! Hooray!
Very detailed, I like.... Maybe the enchantments shouldn't have caps, cause there's people out there who want them 257 enchant levels.... so maybe the caps should be removed? Other than that, nice work, I like this idea. Support

To be honest i saw the title of this thread and said to myself "Oh god not another redundant shield thread" But after reading this I have to say that this is the best base concept for shields I have ever read on these forums. The idea of combining the Sword and the shield to use them both was definitely something i didnt see coming. I applaud you good sir. *applauds*.
Parrying is a decent mechanic, but it's the only one of these I really like. Even then it's not enough to improve the combat system noticeably; it'd still be based almost entirely on equipment rather than skill. This improves the system but by no means fixes it... then again, that may have been your intent, since you just wanted to implement shields rather than rework the combat system.
Shield bashing seems nearly worthless, given the existence of sprint hitting which doesn't slow you down or decrease your damage.
In some ways I dislike the decreased protection that this suggestion is going to give (except in two cases) because blocking is already pathetically worthless in the current game, mostly because that 50% damage reduction doesn't do anything. Literally none of the mobs are worth blocking against except creepers, but the 50% damage reduction oftentimes won't save you if you're unarmored (and if you've got iron armor or better, that iron's going to save you more than blocking will) and is far less effective than sprinthitting it away to reduce your damage or simply running away. Or killing it. Then again, pretty much the entire point of this suggestion is for parrying... I think. That's all blocking would be useful for anyway.
Flawless does not need to be an enchantment, just give it Unbreaking.
Obsidian shields are quite powerful for their cost, and make blazes a complete non-issue. Not really liking them.
This suggestion also adds a whopping 48 items (eight for the individual shields and 40 for the sword/shield combinations) which seems like an awful lot of work for a suggestion that doesn't add terribly much.
I somewhat like that you're trying to make lower-tier shields somewhat competitive with higher-tier ones in some ways, but their durability is so low that they're nearly worthless anyway. I personally would exclusively use wooden shields simply because they're cheap and I never block to begin with, but their durability is so low that I would be more inclined to not use a shield.
Overall, no support. The shields themselves add little; only parrying adds anything notable to the game. Said system has nothing to do with shields, however, and can be done without a shield... therefore, why should I make one? I can sprinthit if I want to knock something back, and parrying is still effective with a sword. The only reason I would ever use a shield is for the Mirror and Huge Blow enchantments, and in that case i'm only ever going to use obsidian shields because their durability is the highest and i'll get the most mileage out of those enchantments on them.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
@Kholdstare: Thanks for the criticism! I can see where you are coming from in all your points. I'm going to work on actually making shields useful compared to simply having armor - perhaps add on some armor when equipped as well as the increased block? I may remove shield bashing entirely, and simply make shields do something similar when parrying - maybe damage the enemy similar to thorns? Anyways, on the concept of the tiers, I might also remove Obsidian shields, but when it comes to the tiers it's kind of the same thing as building a diamond sword - it's simply better than the previous tiers. I'm going to all around up the durability of the shields to make them a bit more useful, too. Finally, I might change the way shields are added and go against one of my previous statements to simply make it a new slot - that way, it would allow for a variety of different items when equipped there but can still be used when holding a blade - but also with tools? But after I've done my geo essay. Thanks again!
@Yoshio: Thanks!
@GameRecker: Thanks to you too!
@Hex_27: Thanks! For your suggestion, I'll add a removal to the limiter in creative mode, but... meh, fine. I'll do some calculations and see about survival, mainly for use in adventure maps.
This seems like a fun suggestion that would positively change PVP combat into having more strategy than just button mashing until one person dies. I also like how the different shield tiers have unique effects that don't necessarily make one of them straight out better 100% of the time. I fully support this.

To those of you suggesting new uses for Emeralds in the suggestions forum: Emeralds have enough uses. You can trade with villagers to get diamond armor/tools/weapons and enchants. Stop suggesting that Emeralds are useless, and learn to play Minecraft. Thanks.
Great suggestion! It really improves the combat mechanic. I support U, but I think, burning mobs with a diamond shield would be OP, maybe limit the range? Also, try posting your suggestion here: http://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions because this is the only suggestion place, Mojang sometimes watches, so U will have the chence to implement shields to the game.
To the first point about the diamond shield - changed it a bit, go take a look
Secondly, I'm going to do that once I think that the idea is popular enough. I need to refine it, like you just helped me do with the diamond shield, until I post it!
Thanks for the support everyone!
Edit: changed parrying to make blocking a bit more useful.
Always baffled me that they haven't included shields in the game yet. Seems like it would be so easy to just add another player item slot for it so you could hold both the sword and shield as you suggested.
It would make skeletons a lot more dynamic to handle for one thing, gives you a way to act positively to defend yourself, rather than having to either go hide or attack.
I support this idea! And this is by far the most worked out idea I have seen so far. I really like the idea of the "back slot". An thought came to me however. Could there be possible other uses for the back slot? One such idea that I thought of was being able to equip a torch. However, equipping this torch would allow you to "hold" a lit torch you can use to light a dark area. "Elder Scrolls Style". The only draw back is you wouldn't be able to place this specific torch. Just an possible idea. Overall, best shield idea so far.
Thanks! The only problem with the torch is that the effect you are thinking about is dynamic lighting, which could be optional but dynamic lighting as a whole is not in the game right now. If it was, that'd be a great idea
I would make banners/quivers/torches have their own section, your post looks ugly at that spot atm.
I would also remove the banner buffs, they have to need to be anything more than decoration.
Now what I like: Shields, duh! Torches: Would certainly improve all my mining experiences. Banners: Well, as long as they don't buff, it would be awesome to be in a big pvp war and have that one guy who is wearing your clans flag on his back
Support, except for what i mentioned.
