I realized a while ago (back when we were still speculating about 1.8) that updates containing mobs seem to follow a pattern. 1.0 added a bunch of mobs, 1.1 did not. Then 1.2 added two new mobs, 1.3 added none (unless you count zombie villagers as a new mob), 1.4 added four more, 1.5 added none. 1.6 then added one (or three, depends if you count mules and donkeys), and 1.7 added none.
What does this mean? It seems mobs are added every other major update, and typically two to four mobs are added at a time. I mentioned this back in the 1.8 snapshot days. Then 1.8 went ahead and confirmed the theory, by adding three new mobs (bunnies, endermites, and guardians).
Of course, this means 1.9 will most likely not add new mobs. This is supported by the fact that none of the hints we got (on Twitter and stuff) mention a new mob. Well, I'm kind of disappointed, but on the other hand, mobs are usually a big part of every update. And 1.9 is supposed to be big. So if we know we're getting lots of new stuff, and we can eliminate the possibility of it being mobs, then that opens up the door to lots of other possible cool stuff.
So, getting a bit off topic, does anyone think 1.9 is going to have a theme? You know, like "The Horse Update", "The Update that Changed the World", and most recently "The Bountiful Update"? Or is it just going to be random stuff. From what we've seen so far (dirt roads, better Enderdragon, corn, seasons?, etc.) it doesn't seem to have any central theme. Then again, neither did 1.8 (Bountiful Update literally just means "it has a lot of stuff", seems like they wanted an excuse to call it something).
Note: I'm not saying we know for certain that 1.9 will not contain mobs. I'm just saying that's the most likely outcome, based on the pattern.

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
Actually, for 1.9 they have mentioned changes to how entities (mobs) are rendered. I wouldn't be surprised if we see new mob related features or net new mob(s) since they may be working on animations and rendering. Still, best not to have any expectations.
"This will make better use of changes in the code, so map makers/mod makers can create better/new mobs.[9]" [/sup]
This Is not True because I have seen a screenshot of different boss health bars.
U can See In this video:
That doesn't mean there's going to be a new boss. It just means there's support for multiple bosses in the same place, which is useful for adventure maps.

no theme? I've got one.
This might be "The Exploration Update" if there changing the gravel paths in villages to new 'packed dirt' road block then they may also update villager buildings (which in my opinion would be great). they've commented in the past about having villages match the biome (like with the desert villages being made of sandstone), I can easily see them going ahead at doing that if their switching out roads. I could see new crops hinting at updated villages as well since they got to put them in the environment somewhere.
they've also commented on more biome specific dungeons (I think in the horse update), so we might see that if their going to be fiddling with default building generation. the shaders, clouds and potential seasons are all visual things to will make things pretty.
of coarse they will be adding a large number of things for the adventure map makers, cus they love those guys.
this is all wild speculation right now though, since there's no snapshot out.

PixelQuest 2, my new 1.10 RPG/rougelike-inspired modpack, is coming soon!

But I agree if it updated to 1.9 right after 1.8.1, and that was a big fix.
I have a youtube channel! Check is out, for Minecraft! Subscribe, every little bit helps!

Praise be to Spode.
I'm with this guy. Problems should be ironed out before any additions are made.

Agreed... there's still alot of unfixed bugs they need to correct.
