Well I'll be. That is rather interesting. I wonder what those new arrows will do. Also nice to see the quiver getting a use. I assume that the arrows in the quiver are the ones that will be able to be shot. I wonder how shield will work. Will they replace the sword blocking function?
Wouldn't it also be interesting if skeletons could fire these new arrows?
Let's wait until a snapshot is out before getting excited about this. Adding more items on skill-less combat mechanics won't do any good in itself, for sure no more than what enchanted weapons did, and Mojang already proved they can work "hard" to add things that don't impact gameplay at all (sword parry, anyone?). I'm very skeptical about all they do, especially if there's nothing to actually test.
Ok, here's my speculation about dinnerbone's new screenshot:
The fact that there is a new quiver item and quiver slot implies that the quiver will somehow enhance your arrow storage. Either it gives you additional space, or maybe it allows you to use the new special arrows.
The yellow arrows appear to be made out of gold, and they have a very thick outline. Maybe they simply deal more damage, as gold is very heavy. This may also make these arrows arc more to balance them.
I am fairly certain that the green arrows are poisoned due to their coloration and the stray pixels "dripping" off of it, possibly crafted with a spider eye or poison potion.
The orange arrows are either fire arrows or a new property yet to be introduced. I'm leaning more towards the latter, as this would make the flame enchant fairly pointless.
Then there's the dark grey arrow. Possibly wither or another magical effect.
Finally, there's the new slot, which is very clearly representing a shield. Could imply literal shields (ones made out of different materials perhaps) or a more magical form of protection, like a force field or charm.
Maybe each arrow corresponds to a potion effect? I saw a suggestion on the Reddit post saying that maybe we should be able to apply potions to arrows, and whatever is hit with the arrow gets the effect that corresponds to the potion, as if they'd been hit by a splash potion.
Yup, I'm calling it.

I just logged on for the first time in over a year to say that 1.9 is turning out to be the most influential update since beta 1.8. And for the first time since beta I am officially stoked to see what will happen with this update. And to the OP way to go with this thread it has been a good read and has had a lot of good information.
Black could be explosive, but we wont know till the next snapshot. Everything else you said does make since and could see working. hopefully poison arrows will be "dipped" in a poison potion you make and not slime.
lastly, before I go back to my hole. I hope this leads to new effects for swords as well. fire,Ice, and poison all could be done without much effort to be honest, and I will keep hoping that my dream of spears will happen. The thought of Spear fighting on horseback would make me sequel like a little girl.
I'm officially excited now. When I read that potion effect on arrows suggestion, I seriously wanted it to happen, and I've been wanting quivers forever to allow for different arrow types. So I thought I'd add what I thought all the new arrows and such are, and what they mean. As I've said, I think that Mojang have listened to one reddit post I saw, and these are in fact arrows with applied potion effects. So essentially splash potions in arrow form. This could open up a whole ton of possibilities. Not all of them would be conventional, either. What if I could heal my allies with healing arrows! (Hopefully arrows with positive effects would not deal damage). Anyway, onto my ideas:
- The thicker arrows with yellow heads are probably some sort of upgrade to the standard arrow, perhaps crafted with gold.
- As I have mentioned a million times, I think the other arrows have had potions applied to them. This is supported by the dripping of them, so whatever has been added to the arrowheads is probably liquid. My next few theories have been made assuming I am correct here.
- The green one is probably the most obvious, and is likely a poison arrow.
- The orange one is tougher. It looks like a fire arrow, but there is no fire potion. It could be for fire resistance, or one of the red potions like healing or harming (which would essentially just be a stronger arrow, like the 'heavy arrow' I have already pointed out). If it was a fire arrow, the flame enchant would be useless, as Derborgus said, so I'm pretty sure it'll be another existing potion applied to it, unless my whole theory is wrong.
- The black one is tougher yet. There are no black potions. Maybe it's for one of the grey/darker potions, like weakness or invisibility?
Another idea could be that, as this is the combat update, new potions and effects could be added, which these arrows could be for. Maybe they will add a black coloured potion that the black arrow corresponds to. If I'm wrong and they aren't potion arrows, then there's a whole ton of other possibilities.
The quiver seems to have a special slot just for it, rather than acting like a backpack in some mods, probably to stop people from using more than one. One thing that seems disappointing is that the slot next to the quiver seems to be its ammunition, and there is only one slot, making it effectively just one extra inventory slot for arrows. I would guess that it just prioritises those arrows, and then when you run out, will automatically put another stack in the slot based on placement in inventory. But then, that just ruins the point. I'd prefer it if the quiver had maybe 4/5 slots, and we could toggle through arrows with a second hotbar while in combat, maybe a vertical one on the right hand side of the screen, scrolling through with R or something. Guess we'll wait and see how the quivers work. Maybe there will be different types? Who knows.
Oh, and shields. That's cool. So that means we will probably have the ability to block attacks now. All we need now is dual wielding

As great as terrain generation/mapmaker/horse/redstone updates are, I agree that 1.9 will be very influential. A revamped combat system is just what we need!

That would be cool. Just like old times.
Praise be to Spode.
Damn it's too early to release a new update for minecraft if you ask me.
*At Mojang Headquarters*
Hmm. Seeing as it's been ONLY 9 months since 1.8, I think we can wait a bit for a new update.

Hmm. Seeing as I payed a WHOLE £18-ish for this game, I think I should complain on the forums about how my free content isn't coming fast enough.
"Free" does not mean free from criticism.

If you guys are genuinely upset about not getting 1.9 soon enough, then I have the solution:
Take a break from the game.
This picture was just released by Dinnerbone.
Shields, quivers, new arrows

It looks like they should be ready for a snapshot, right?
Although, it does look like one of those "MOAR ARroWs" mods that are made in ten minutes through MCreator

Wow, nice! Quivers are coming back and shields are coming, too!
Now I am kinda hyped...
GENERATION 28: When you see this put it in your signature and add 1 to the generation.
Holy quivers! Now I'm pumped! Adding this right away to the post!
I love how you guys complain about Mojang not doing anything when they have in fact been doing thins all along. Give 'em a break!

Orange are likely fire arrows. Those are a staple of any archery arsenal.
Yellow look like gold or glowstone. Perhaps a "glowstick" kind of item that many spelunking games have.
Green poison, naturally.
Black, I duno.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
Alpha 1.0.4
Oh my gosh something meaningful happened.

Having a dedicated slot for arrows can help with inventory
I remember watching a Let's Player and he mentioned he never used arrows because it required two spaces, one for the bow and one for the arrows.
