I agree. They are useless blocks. My suggestion would be to make it a little more rare like the gravel. Gravel & these use less blocks should be the same percentage of chance like the gravel before it got added.
But gravel IS useful, think about it, sand wouldn't be a good place to put the path to your home in.
Plus you need flint that comes out of gravel rarely, you can make arrows out of it.

And no, Mojang did not rip anything off. All mods are already free for mojang to use as they wish, in part or whole, without permission, credit, or anything of that nature. Not to mention, with the vast number of mods out there, its basically impossible to add anything anymore that isnt "From XXX mod". So now Mojang is being called out by people like you for stealing ideas when they were actually planned years ago before most of the mods were even around.
If you consider this stealing or ripping off, then I should probably go after Obsidian for stealing my Battery charger mod idea and putting it into Fallout New Vegas without credit...

That's not what I was suggesting; they should improve it, although it is a bit too much to ask for customization of every individual biome, given how many sliders you would need, but the other stuff I mentioned should be added (as noted, customization of most structures is already in Superflat; the size of climate zones can be changed in a similar way to biome size and they can be easily bypassed altogether).
IMO, we're lucky to be still having updates from this game. They could've just stopped when it came out of Beta.

1. Open your Minecraft launcher.
2. Click "New Profile" on the bottom left.
3. Change the profile name to whatever you want.
4. Under "Version Selection", find "Use Version."
5. Click "Use Latest Version" and switch it to 1.7.10
6. Problem solved!
