With all the recent news going around that the newer versions of Minecraft (Windows 10, XBoxOne, PS4, Mobile) are going to be supported more than the original legacy version, does this mean that Microsoft will eventually kill off the Java version? It seems as if they're trying to get more people onto the Windows 10 edition. While I get that the Windows 10 edition is more optimized and better written, the Java version still has a large number of mods that will never see conversion to the new platforms simply because of the differences between both languages. Java has no relations with C++ and it seems as if they're trying to destroy the modding community and get more people to buy DLC and skins from the console ports.
What do you guys think? I haven't played this game in ages, and it's been a long time since I've posted in this forum.
Mojang isn't about to abandon Mac, Unix, Linux, etc. users. The java version will continue, if nothing else for them.
But it may not be the "best" version anymore. Everything wears out over time and needs to be replaced. That goes for the java version.
Like how will the now cross compatible other editions (including your beloved glorified Pocket Edition) would be any better, than Java edition? Well, maybe frame rates and that's pretty much it. Since the skins (okay, you can have any skin you want in Win 10 ed) and resource packs and now shaders, that's all something, that Java edition users can get for free. You are actually ok in paying from something, that Java edition (that's the ORIGINAL edition) users get for free. And no, still those resource packs in all other editions, that now will be cross compatible, are horrible, and they look stupid.
Sure, there's some stupid looking resource packs for Java edition as well, but at least those are made by gamers, for gamers. And they do it for fun. The persons who have created those absolutely atrocious "resource packs" have done them because they got paid to do them.
First, define "better". The sheer number of features? It better have more features- it's had a 6 year head start! Besides, there's a huge difference between having "more" features and "fewer but better" features.
Second, I don't play my "beloved glorified" Pocket Edition, at all. I don't have a tablet, or a smartphone. Nor do I play the java version- I couldn't put up with it anymore.
Third, all you got to play is the "free" card? I remember my dad saying "Something is free only because it's not worth paying for."
Fourth, it's your opinion that those "free" resource packs are better. My opinion is I'd much rather have a professionally written pack that works rather than an untested one written by an unknown "someone" on his kitchen table "for fun".
I'm not gonna try to tell anyone which version is better- that's for the individual to decide. But I made my choice.
I don't think it will happen any time soon, but it could certainly happen eventually. I think the main issue is that Java will not go away easily until all other versions have feature parity with the Java version. Next they will have to make a version playable on old Windows PCs, as well as Mac and Linux. No more Windows 10 Edition, although still having it available via Win10 store. Then they need an indefinite discounted or free offer for anyone with the Java version so they can make the switch.
If they do all of that and still keep the last Java version available for play for those who refuse to switch, I would have no problem with them dropping Java. But to be perfectly honest they might as well just make Minecraft 2 if they are going to do all that. Start from scratch and rebuild it entirely with all that in mind.

Of course Java edition had 6 year head start! It is the original, for crying out loud! And the console editions has all the same features, than Java edition, and PE only have one feature, that isn't in Java edition, and it's the fallen down trees. That's all. Ever else feature in it is the same, as Java edition.
Second, I don't play my "beloved glorified" Pocket Edition, at all. I don't have a tablet, or a smartphone. Nor do I play the java version- I couldn't put up with it anymore.
Say whatever you want, but the truth is, that Win 10 edition which happens to be port from Pocket Edition to Win 10 tablets, phones, and it just happens to work in Win 10 PC's as well. Therefor, it's glorified pocket edition.
Third, all you got to play is the "free" card? I remember my dad saying "Something is free only because it's not worth paying for."
Oh, so you're one of those who can throw of money as much as they want to buy something from one of the most greedy companies in the world, that probably don't even pay that good of royalties to the creator of those resource packs. And why on earth would you pay from something, that you could of gotten for free? It's not like it would be pirating the stuff.
Fourth, it's your opinion that those "free" resource packs are better. My opinion is I'd much rather have a professionally written pack that works rather than an untested one written by an unknown "someone" on his kitchen table "for fun".
Professionally written? For crying out loud, not everyone, who creates resource packs for Java edition are "someone" on his kitchen table. There's people, who are either professional artist, not everyone of the resource pack creators are amateurs.
I'm not gonna try to tell anyone which version is better- that's for the individual to decide. But I made my choice.
"But it may not be the "best" version anymore." And then there's those multiple times you have literally bashed Java edition just because you spot the opportunity to do so.
Responses in bold.
Literally, every time I see you posting something on the Java edition side of this forum, you don't have anything else to say, than how Java edition is sinking ship (which it just might be doing, but not yet), or how your beloved glorified PE is the Minecraft 2, which you think everyone wants. And it still is not being lazy, if server owner don't update their server to newest version, it's still called free will of choice.
We know, that you love the Win 10 edition, you don't need to bash the Java edition Every. Single. Time. You see opportunity to do so.
I just want to point out that I both have a custom skin, and a 32x Faithful resource pack whilst playing Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition.
Might also be worth pointing out that I didn't pay a cent for either of them.
So they have given you the possibility to use the resource pack you want now too? Since last time I played that edition, I didn't find that option...

Eventually many popular mods will get ported to the Windows 10 edition, if such a Modding API is being made.
