Most of the time change is needed to progress. If the game was exactly how it was back then, then I don't think it'd be as popular as it is now. But the game is growing, and it's still being played by millions. So I guess the change wasn't bad.
I didn't start crazy early. I started in 1.2.5 and yes things were simple, but if the game didn't progress since then, I doubt i'd still play. The updates are what keep new players coming and the keep the community alive. Otherwise the game would slowly die out.

Personally, the game has got better, but the community has got worse. I mostly play on small servers to mitigate this, as whenever I go on a large server, I'm assaultinf by screeching children.

That's why I stopped playing minecraft from mid-2015 to early-2016
Heh... beta. 1.8 beta was the single worse update to minecraft, IMO. Hunger is a stupid mechanic that is nothing more than a timer for when you have to eat again. It adds no challange to the game at all.
I remember alpha... so simple, so new, back when no one really know much about anything in the game. Minecart boosters anyone?

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

i tbh agree, not to mention that hunger is pretty much the biggest reason that it feels...different
that, xp, and smooth lighting (which you can turn off so yay)
If Minecraft had stayed how it was back in Beta I would have stopped playing years ago. I don't like every thing that goes into each update but as a whole each version has been drastically superior to the previous version in my eyes.

Really this is all just nostalgia. I've been playing Minecraft for a while now (Alpha 1.2.6!) and I'll admit, I miss playing the old versions, but it's not the simplicity I miss. What I miss and what I'm sure you miss too is that feeling of wandering in a new world where you don't know anything, exploring and trying to learn as you go along. I'm sure people that have only started playing Minecraft recently will feel the same way we do in the future, missing that feeling of wonder that a new player has. Games are always much more exciting when you are new to them.

If you understand that the past is in the past and you could go back to an old version with the launcher, what's the point of making yet another nostalgia thread on the forum? I don't want to be rude, but I really don't see the point of that. There is nothing said here that hasn't been said before.

Insulting people for their beliefs is not a good way of convincing them to adopt yours.
Fiction is just a game of make-believe recorded on paper or film. But that's what makes it so great.
Honestly, this is one of the better ones, with an OP that actually realizes that what he's feeling is nostalgia, and is actually discussing his points, not just stating them and yelling at anyone who disagrees.
Agreed.
Now, I myself started myself at 1.8.8 (yes im fairly new) but I understand how you feels about something different.
Also 1.9 is a bit annoying for me, because what the attack cooldown bar seems to be like is always annoying me when I mine.

Good point. It is better. Those threads where the OP basically thinks Minecraft and all its players should be rolled back to an old version because that's what they want (or, as they tend to put it, is "better") really rub me the wrong way. Fortunately, this thread isn't one of them.
And, after all, it is definitely true that Minecraft has changed. Whether it's for the better or not, well, that's up to each player to decide.

Personally, I feel the game went downhill when we moved away from finite worlds. :/
Why would you want a world that is only 256x64x256 (the size in Classic)? Once I got established I would exhaust such a small world in just a few days even if it happened to have an above average number of caves in the area (the issue is not one of resources but simply areas to explore).
I remember when I joined the site in late 2011. It looks nothing like it does now.
rip MineCraft Beta
You can still play beta if you like. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_launcher#Time_Machine

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
I know.

some say it went downhill after Notch added pistons

Who ever said I was dwelling
Nah, I say when he handed it over to jeb (no offense to jeb though, he's a cool guy)
That's why I stopped playing minecraft from mid-2015 to early-2016

Ik, but it's nice to just look back at what the game once was around 4-5 years ago.

To be honest, jeb has given us so much great content that notch could never give us, and original ideas!
(Come on man, notch didnt even want to add ladders to the game but the community pressured him to...)
if notch was still in control of minecraft, it would be dead.

Hipster Jesus liked you before you were cool.
Just keep in mind though, just because you are nostalgic, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy Minecraft how it is now.
EDIT: And I'm not saying you aren't, this is for everyone who feels this way.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
