I run a vanilla SMP server. We have a no griefing rule, so no one can alter the build of another player without consent. One of my members is sore over not being asked to do one of the bigger projects like the town hall/nether hub/etc this season, and the person who did build our town hall helped me do a prank that involved filling this person's arena with crafting tables, so he did the following around the nether hub in the middle of spawn:
His argument is that it shouldn't even be voted on, someone built something at spawn so it stays unless it causes a major problem, it doesn't matter if everyone likes it or only one person likes it, its not a beauty contest (obscurely citing server rules). So, what I'd like from you guys is some opinions on the matter. Does covering a nether hub in crafting tables constitute a build? Am I crazy for thinking this should be replaced with something less awful? What would you want in this situation? Feel free to vote in the poll above and leave any opinions on the matter below. I'd like to get some input from other Minecrafters before I take the issue to my members for discussion.
It's a public build in a public place. If it was his house/shop/other personal build it would've been different, same thing if it was in the middle of nowhere. But since it's something that everyone uses and thus belongs to the community, it's not only acceptable but also desirable removing it if the majority of the players finds it annoying.
Pretty sure some of the Mindcrackers in season 3-4 liked to build on top of others' builds to annoy them, like Zed Tower on top of Bling tower.

Im an insult to Etho and Mindcrack, yet I am a fan of it

^ This.
If the majority of your players find that it doesn't belong there, it's perfectly fine to remove/replace it with something else since, after all as the person I quoted stated - it's a community build.
Whether or not they look cool is only part of the equation, though I'm sure even those that don't think it looks bad could see how others would. The other part if the reasoning behind it. Should a pointless vendetta be allowed to be backed up by rules that obviously weren't meant to be applied to a situation like this?
I too think it looks good like that, but I don't have to look at it every day and you do, so it's really up to you and your players.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Ask each player if they like it. If the vote turns to majority dont like it, remove it and/or kick the user.
Personally the look is cool, but it would be pretty annoying to feel like you were going into the crafting table dimension.

To punish someone even though he didn't violate any rules would be a stupid move.
The same with changing the rules and punishing someone accordingly after the incident happend.
All he should do now is clarify the rules for future occurrences of such behavior.
It doesn't seem like the perpetrator was punished, at least I think so after reading his posts.
I also think punishing him in this case would be just plain wrong.
I was saying that if he decided to punish him ....
vikingjoofnarIt's your fault for pranking him in the first place, so just apologize.
We're in the same page, I don't know if an apology is necessary, but when you pull a prank, and he pranks you back .... act like an adult and have a sense of humor, if it upsets you, think long and hard before you go pulling "pranks" on your server.
If he had pranked me back, i.e. something of mine, that would've been fine, and this post wouldn't exist as I'd be plotting my next move. This isn't a return prank. This is on something that would theoretically be a community build. Also, pranks are usually taken down once completed. He wants this to stay the way it is for the remainder of the map. How is that a prank? Think you may have missed the whole topic of this conversation.
After "pranking" him, if you go ahead and punish him for an innocent bit of revenge, you are basically a d-bag admin.
Bit of an overreaction considering nobody said anything about any sort of punishment...I really don't think you understood the original post. And again, if this was a revenge prank, that would be perfectly fine, but he's done it in a community area and wants it to be permanent. So, not a prank, and not revenge. And no punishment. Read everything before you start slinging insults, please.
Since you're the owner of your SMP server you're the god of this little world.
You've made the rules and you can also change them to your liking.
If the inhabitants of your world like it or not is another matter.
In this case I'd advise you to hold a voting on this subject and act accordingly.
Afterwards you should clarify the rules.
No system of rules is perfect, so you'll have to make changes eventually to address emerging problems like this one.
You're technically right, but I try not to run it as a dictatorship. I like everybody to have the freedom to express their creativity. Clearly this incident slipped through the cracks in the existing rules, which I think you're definitely right about a needing clarification. I think we'll end up voting as a community whether it stays or not, and in the future we'll be voting member-submitted designs for all community builds so nobody can take them into their own hands will ill-intent like this again. Thanks for the input!

It's up to you. I personally say that they should stay since it looks kinda cool, but a tiny fragment says to remove it.
pretty good mod. try it.

I agree that it looks quite nice.
However, if the portal was already there then they altered it which surely would fall under the no greifing rule?
No more so than the original prank perhaps, but if they were allowed to remove the crafting tables from the arena then surely you could remove these?
Just testing.

I already had. I also helped him clean up the prank.
