My friends and I used to love playing this game together. We all started in 6th or 7th grade and we all loved it. Our group extended to about 16 people from our middle school. Now that we're Freshmen in high school, (I'm 14), it seems that I'm one of the few people that still plays it at my school. My original comrades have fallen to other games and some just don't find the game interesting anymore. I've also noticed some of my favorite servers have lost many players. I've known for a long time now that Minecraft is associated with nerds, little kids, etc. As a side question, why is this the common association? I've been teased lightly by some of my athletic friends at school about playing a game meant for "Little kids," and "Nerds." Why are these associations made with Minecraft?
Basically what I'm asking here is why are those types of associations made with Minecraft, and why does it seem that Minecraft is losing popularity?
Not sure why that stereotype is there if it exists. There are a lot of older players that have been playing for years. It's the ONLY game I still play and I'm now going for my PhD in Engineering. Don't let their teasing bother you. Minecraft is a lot more worthwhile of a game then most of what's out there. It brings out your creative side and offers one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had.

Most games' lifespan have players coming and going. People are always going to come and go, but a game should be considered "dying" if players are not coming. So far, I still see players coming so I doubt Minecraft is dying right now.
Minecraft is not just meant for "little kids" as it has a broad audience. I think they were just trying to troll you.

"It's not enough you have the will to care. What are you going to do to show it?"
The answer to the question is overall sales of Minecraft over the last 36 months. Does anyone have these figures?
Sales have nothing to do with how good something is, and how many people enjoy it. Say, in one year 10,000,000 people bought Minecraft, and the next 5 years only 1 person bought Minecraft, that doesn't mean that now only 1 person plays it. For that matter, Minecraft could not even sell 1 more copy and it would still be very popular because everyone who already owns it plays it and enjoys it. Again, sales mean nothing.
I'm 29 years old and currently only play Minecraft, that is until GTAV is released for PC, then I'll play just those 2 games. Stereotyping is only for the ignorant...just let them be ignorant and move on.
Go onto Minecraft.net and look at how many copies of the PC/Mac version have been sold. It keeps rising, and that's just the PC and Mac version!!!! So no, Minecraft is not losing popularity, and plenty of adults play Minecraft, so that's just your friends teasing you. Don't let it bother you.

Yeah, I'd ignore them. I'm personally almost 22 years old and I've been playing Minecraft since Alpha. I've also been running servers for 3 years. This is the only game with high replayability, high creativity, and is still challenging for some one my age. Not to mention its about 1000000 games in 1 ! Haha. I also don't believe it's losing popularity. If you have fun when you play Minecraft, keep on playing it. I'd much rather see people peacefully creating art work in Minecraft rather than shooting noob tubes on Call of Duty.
As for the comment on sales. That doesn't really matter. A better statistic would be an average amount of players that log in each day/week/month.
Actually sales of PC minecraft dropped precipitously over the last few months. Through the spring and summer, they were selling around 15,000/day. (I would check up everytime somebody posted a "minecraft is dying/losing popularity" thread.) But recently it's been a lot lower. I've seen about 5,500 to 7,245 (which is today). I'd guess it's related to either the EULA business or the Microsoft purchase but I wasn't checking during that period so I can't say for sure. I can't find a place with recent historical figures to see if the sales rates track any of the news events.
IMO this drop in sales increases the chance MS will push out a Minecraft 2.
Many modern societies have gotten this idea that violence is "adult", so a game with less violence and no guns is "kiddie". That's quite backwards, as people are most violent around age 2. However, Minecraft is sliding mostly to a younger group because after a while most players get tired of it, like with any game. New players are mostly going to be those who couldn't play before, which means young kids.

This is the most brilliant quote explaining Minecraft that I have ever heard, although I do notice a lot of fathers playing with sons and daughters too, but not by themselves.
Minecraft is going through the natural life cycle of shedding the people who were only into it during the trend years and are now bored of it. It's technically losing popularity, but if anything the community is just getting better by shedding the dead weight.

Wrong. Not even a week ago I checked it and there was over 12,000 people that had bought it within that 24 hour period. It's always going to spike, simply because there are other game releases that will come and go. The latest being Advanced Warfare and Assassin's Creed Unity. Two big games that will further prevent some people from buying any other games.
And Minecraft has one of the longest lifespans of any game. There are a significant amount of people that have well over 10,000 hours, while very few people have over 5,000 hours on any game on Steam.
Sinds the sales of minecraft accounts keep rising, i don't think the game is losing in popularity. I guess your friends just got fed up with the game. It happens.
Minecraft definetly isn't just for little kids though. Plenty of college students and adults play it too.
It's been almost a year since I got my X360 edition of the game (my pc sucks to play it) and when I got nothing to do on Halos or my GoWs, I just launch my map and start building or changing some stuff here and there. It really keeps me playing, because I can do everything I want (as for the TU's limitations). And come on, as long as we still see the Achievement Hunter Crew, Stampy and Squid, Dan Lags and Crib Craft, or even the DiamondMinecart posting videos doing stuff in the game, it just points they still have much to play, just like us, that don't post videos on YT.
One thing that really makes me mad is just that where I live (check my ID), the youtubers actually attracted A LOT of childish audience due to their playstyle, comments, mod gameplays, et cetera. And it screwed up Minecraft's image, making it look like a kid's-only game, and somehow my friends found out I play the game and started to mock me about it.
They just can't admit Minecraft is way more popular than the GTAs or Battlefields or the South Park they play. Be jealous, idiots!

I might have missed some of the spikes - but even 12,000 is lower than anything I'd seen before (which was 13,000 and something). Certainly sales are down. I also suspect fighting games are generally not Minecraft's primary competition, although I could be wrong.
There's no question that Minecraft has been one of the biggest games ever, and that some people are fanatically devoted to it. That would include me, actually - I've scarcely touched any other game for a year and a half. And I suspect years from now, there will still be many players and an ongoing stream of kids becoming old enough to play. But the OP was asking if Minecraft was *less* popular, and I think it's definitely "yes", even though it is still extremely popular (7,000 purchases per day is absolutely a lot.)

Nope. Your friends just aren't using their creativity to make the game fun for them. The servers are emptying because that happens (though if the server is good enough, new people will replace the old people).
Although it may seem like less people are purchasing the game, it's almost the top downloaded game for every platform it's released on and arguably the most purchased game ever released, with the number of purchases rising rapidly. I saw a graph using their site statistics not to long ago that showed they are getting more downloads than ever. So no, it's not losing popularity
I don't think it's dieing... though I have noticed this trend, and I'm not in high school! I think you just don't NOTICE the people who play it. Essentially, now that it's so largely known, people don't talk about it as much. Soooo, that girl in the back of the class that cuss's WAAAAAAY to much, could be a player. The reason why your getting bored of it is the same reason you get bored of any game, to much of it. Wait a few months/years and come back to it. You could find a whole new way to play!
Basically what I'm asking here is why are those types of associations made with Minecraft, and why does it seem that Minecraft is losing popularity?
