Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
I know I'm just saying that people should stop saying the bought Minecraft and say the bought Mojang because that's what actually happened.
True enough, but how much attention have they paid to Mojang's other games?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
A moderator had shut my thread down for redundancy then linked me here to continue the discussion. For some reason, they believe that my topic is somehow related to this old news, but I'll post it here anyway.
Before we continue, bear in mind nothing has been set in stone yet. I'm creating this discussion to raise awareness on the possibility of it happening, to see what you guys think about it, and maybe rally towards a way to convince Microsoft to not press the matter.
Minecraft is a highly popular game, has been growing nonstop for a very long time. I myself got involved with the game back when it was in its alpha stages, and even then the game continued to give me hours of fun. So long as you have the creativity to make things, Minecraft will have infinite replayability. After discovering this article, I'm kind of concerned about the possibility of Minecraft 2 for several reasons:
1. How would you make a sequel to a sandbox, for starters?
Since the beginning, Minecraft has had no goals set out for you. You can explore the nether, visit the end, slay a dragon then later the wither, but thats as far as it ever went. The game's primary focus was to put you in the center of the world and tell you to go hog wild. What is the point of making a Minecraft 2, besides Microsoft attempting to rake in more cash for their ownership of the name?
2. What would this mean for the modding community?
A large portion of this game's immense popularity is due to the modding support it has. While no real official API exists, unofficial APIs were developed in its place thus allowing mod developers to make large numbers of various mods. Some mods like Thaumcraft and IndustriaCraft and Thermal Expansion are some of the most well known and well-developed to think of. What will happen to them when development of Minecraft slows to a halt to make way for a sequel? Will popular mod developers even bother transitioning over? If they do, what will happen to the already developed community in the first game? If they don't, what kind of impact will a reduced modding community have on the sequel? Honestly, Microsoft really needs to consider these things much more carefully.
3. Why not just make expansions to the first game instead?
I've already mentioned about the deep-seated modding community and the immense popularity the game itself has made, transitioning over to a sequel could very well split the community which might damage the future success of the game. Why not go the safe way and just bring out expansions to the game instead? The community won't need to split into fragments, modding won't be in any danger, and Microsoft can continue to make money by adding new features into the game via optional content.
I am against the idea that there should be a Minecraft 2 for the concerns I have raised above. There really is no need to completely start over and send modding back to the stone age.
Obviously, the previous poster (and others) are pro-mod. But that's the point. Why are there mods? Because the mod-lovers are bored playing the basic game and they are looking for ways to make MC "better" and more "interesting". Better graphics and gameplay, and more (or different) mobs, items, etc. In fact, it's the sheer number of mods out there that proves that a MC2 is needed.
In other words, wouldn't MC2 be a nothing but a officially modded MC? Would it do away with mods? No, but the modders are gonna have to learn a new programming language anyway (no way MC2 would be written in java), and we wouldn't need as many mods (especially if they included some user-customization within the program). And what would be the difference between having to buy an 'expansion' and buying MC2? If done right (who said an 'extension' would be done right?), then MC2 could galvanize and revitalize the community (and non-MC gamers) instead of splitting them apart.
Slapping a coat of paint on an old house won't work. Some of us have outgrown it and we need to move on to a bigger, better house.
IF it happens, I just hope MS/Mojang gives us something worthwhile.
Here is a recent article where Phil Spencer of MS says they don't plan on making a Minecraft 2, as well as other stuff. Might be worth a read if nobody posted it yet.

Well, what the article says is: "Spencer said discussions about future extensions of the series (MC2)--which he admitted not everyone may agree with--will come later." and: ""I don't know if Minecraft 2, if that's the thing that makes the most sense. The community around Minecraft is as strong as any community out there. We need to meet the needs and the desires of what the community has before we get permission to go off and do something else,"
As I read it, first things first. Settle in and don't screw up. Get the community on their side and calm their fears. They're not thinking about doing MC2... for now.,,, but it "will come later".
What might be neat/disturbing to some is the comments of the "unifying" of PC & console multiplayer using Live (and the Sony people being left out). The only way I see that working is if the PC and console versions are the same. That means each version will gain some features of the other. That's the Good News. The Bad News is the PC version may have to be 'dumbed' down a bit.
Remember that is all MY speculation and just my thinking out loud. But it does make ya think, doesn't it?
they did the unifying of pc/xbox with a game called dead island. i quite often played with people on the pc version. i do however fail to understand this "minecraft 2" people are talking about, is it a reference to minecraft 2.0.0 like the current 1.8.0 or an actual sequel to minecraft like "minecraft 2: return of the steve"
how do they make a sequel to a game that has absolutely no objective other than to mine an build in a totally open world?
What couldn't be improved in a sequal?
There's all those mods for a reason- to basically "make a sequel" to small parts of the game.
But I agree, the basic premise of the game should remain. Mine, explore, craft, build, survive.... without an end and without an objective.
Improvements?
Why do we stop at depth 64? Why can't we go deeper, with new mobs in the depths?
Why isn't more blocks effected by gravity? Why don't we have more varied kinds of ores?
Why don't we have different mobs? Aren't you tired of zombies? They've been around for like forever- without changing.
Graphically, a lot could be improved (while keeping the same game). Just look at what some of the modders have done, or better yet, go watch the trailer of Life Is Feudal and imagine MC looking something like that.
For those who think MC is the Perfect Game- it's not. Darn good, but not perfect. Some of you may not realize what you're missing.
For those who think MC is the Perfect Game- it's not. Darn good, but not perfect. Some of you may not realize what you're missing.
The way I would put it is MC is the perfect concept. It was executed VERY well, but there is still room for improvement, while maintaining the same concept.
2 points about the Alpha licenses (on or before Dec 20, 2010) and the Microsoft purchase:
1. "All future versions" were promised to Alpha buyers. Microsoft will have to honor that, and versions is a pretty broad term.
2. "No DRM, you can do whatever you want with it." So Alpha license holders are exempt from all of these "no monetization" requirements appearing in newer licenses. Anyone that wants to host a minecraft gambling or minecraft pay-for-stuff server can do so, as long as they have an alpha license. Microsoft can't take away permissions granted to Alpha purchasers.
Personally, I hope Microsoft appreciates what an awesome community there is, and doesn't harass or rip off early supporters, or anyone for that matter!
Where were you promised in writing (please provide source), or you just think you were promised? (How do you prove you're an Alpha buyer anyway?)
The new EULA (which replaces the old) doesn't "promise" you anything, nor does it say Alpha buyers are exempt or 'special' in any way. (It replaces all previous EULA's/ "promises"). In fact, just the opposite.
Microsoft doesn't "have" to honor anything.
New sheriff in town.
New rules.
And you (and us) can't do anything about it- except vote with our dollars. No, I'm not handing over my wallet to MS... but I don't expect something for nothing either.

Yeah, there's plenty to add to Minecraft for a sequel, but I agree that it should be exactly the same idea, just improved.
And I would love to have much deeper terrain.
When they added to the height limit, and not the depth, it was only confirmation of what I already knew, which was that Mojang were pampering those that treat Minecraft like a lego set, and giving them more room to build.
I would have preferred them to add all that extra room to the bottom of the world, with angrier mobs the further you go down, and nastier sounds and atmospheric effects, with better rewards for your trouble.
This is why Minecraft 2 is a good idea.
Well, 1 of them. There are many areas of Minecraft that need fixing or improving, and many new things that could be added to it as standard, as proved by some of the amazing mods out there.
yes i realize there is room for minecraft to improve vastly and i would love to see it go far deeper with far angrier mobs (hence the mods i have that add a lot more mobs) but that's still not a reason to make an actual sequel to the game, mojang did updates to add new stuff to the game and fix bugs, so why can't microsoft? oh yeah, they need to recuperate 2.5 billion dollars. now that's an actual reason to make a sequel. everything you've said is merely updateable features.
life is feudal looks like a game i wouldn't play to be honest. for me personally part of the reason i like minecraft so much is its lack of decent graphics. back when i first started playing games (early 90's) it was much like minecraft nowadays but with hd tv and hd consoles such as the xbox one the games i play are so life like and minecraft just brings back those childhood gaming memories not to mention its square shaped lacking in circles world appeals to my ocd lol
as for people claiming "but notch promised us it would be free, microsoft have to meet those obligations" unless you can show me a written contract, your arguement is invalid. you just need to face the fact he got offered 2.5 billion dollars and took it, he can say what he wants and people can say what they want, either way it doesn't matter. the game is sold, he is rich, microsoft own it. end of story
I'm worried about what will happen with Minecraft under Microsoft's control. I don't think they'll be dumb enough to do things like make all servers be Microsoft run, or stop Bukkit. But who knows what they'll do. I'll be angry if they start doing in game and in app purchasing. I hate stuff like that.
Personally, I don't know how they would do it (cross-platform via Live), by "unifying" the 'Minecraft experience' unless they make all the versions exactly alike (same world size, features, etc.). Think Realms, but anybody could get on. In another Spencer article that included more of his comments, he said that MS would not give Sony platforms the ability to connect to Live so they would be left out. He didn't say anything about existing servers, but I'm sure the Live-or-nothing thing has crossed their minds.
Don't panic. Nothing's in stone, all is speculation, and no telling what's gonna happen... good or bad. Ask us a year from now.
No, Microsoft bought Mojang not Minecraft. That means that
Microsoft owns Mojang.
Mojang owns Minecraft.
I know I'm just saying that people should stop saying the bought Minecraft and say the bought Mojang because that's what actually happened.

Not much because they aren't as major as Minecraft.
