I have been working on an adventure map on the xbox since day one of the release, I haven't seen or heard anything about Books and Quills and really need them to complete the history of the world. When are they coming out? And if they aren't why not? They are an important game piece for role playing and many other things.
So essentially my question is: Where are the writable books?
Inputting any text with the controller is already kind of a pain for just simple signs. I can understand why they won't implement books and quills or at the very least why it would be a low priority.
dso basically, they are'nt going to add book and quills because somewhere in the world theres a kid who doesnt have a keyboard? thats the most pathetic excuse ive ever heard. while theyre at it, they should get rid of all the ores too, cause maybe somone who plays minecraft doesnt have a pickaxe!
Clearly, im pretty ticked off at this. book and quills were one of the things i was really looking forword to being added to minecraft XBLA, even before i got a chatpad and was typing with my controller. i built a library in a city a friend and i built, and i wanted to fill it with random storys and stuff. but NOOO, i cant because of microsofts STUPID LANGUAGE FILTERING!!!
I hope they at least add somthing to compensate for the lack of a book and quill in MCXBLA.
No, primarily they won't add them because they would crash the game. Per Xbox Live policy all written text must go through the chat filter (yes, I know you think that's stupid - but you don't own M$). We have already proven that too many signs in a world can crash the chat filter, thereby bringing the game to a screeching halt. Imagine what would happen if they put in the book and quill feature. It would kill the chat filter and the game would crash.
Bottom line, books and quills are technologically impossible in the MCXBLA360 due to system requirements put into place by M$. Like it or lump it or leave....
4J's intentions and reasons for not adding book and quill were clearly stated at Minecon 2012 (i.e. a year ago now). There have also been several threads discussing this issue over that past year... so, that you've heard nothing really just reflects your lack of research on the matter.
Whether or not you consider them to be an integral part of the game, it is more integral that the game run, period. As electricblooz stated, the addition of so much text that must be filtered would crash the game entirely; and it has been known for a long time that having even too many signs can cause crashing issues. If you absolutely must have book and quill, I suggest you play on the PC; and I suggest next time you do some research before committing to a project on the Xbox dependent on specific features of the PC version of the game.
Damn I'm really upset about this! I was also wondering why my adventure map had crashed but now I realise that it's because I have around 1,000 signs in it: which I wouldn't have to do if I could just write a book. I understand why we can't have them but I wish there was a way to get the because writing a story or rules on a sign (which only allows for around 10 words/sign) takes ******* ages!
May I suggest that you pare your list of rules down to the essentials and learn to be more concise. Personally, the last thing I want to do when playing a video game is read a book; and it doesn't matter whether the book is in the form of a book or on 1,000 signs.
Also, consider that the Xbox is set up for splitscreen play, but opening a book by one player would cover the screens for all the other players on that Xbox; completely drawing their play to a halt until the person reading the book or writing an entry in it is done. I think this would be a mega annoyance in my household.
Thank you for trying to give me a lesson in making maps...I know that reading signs is a pain but I would rather that everyone understood the rules at the start of the map with an interactive rule tutorial (which has to involve signs) so I can explain the creations in the map and how to use them in order to play the map effectively because I would prefer that they spent the first 10 or 20 minutes in the rules section and then understood everything rather than me having to explain everything over and over again during the map or people getting stuck and wondering what to do.
As for books- if you want to play a map, taking a minute to read the book at the start won't be that hard and would be quicker than reading lots of signs. Also who said that the book has to cover the whole TV screen and not just one split-screen?
Edit: Consider making a map in split screen- every time you write a sign the whole screen gets covered in that sign effectively drawing the game to a stand still.
Yes, every time you write a sign in splitscreen, it covers the whole screen... but at least when someone reads a sign, the text is only displayed in their quadrant of the screen. You can want books all you want (IDK)... 4J have already said they have no intention of trying to add them on the Xbox 360. Be concise on signs... or live with the freezing and lag... or play on the PC.
Yeah it is unfortunate that we can't have books but it's not the biggest worry. You never know, 4J might change their mind if MS changes something. It's just a pain writing all these signs but I guess I will have to manage.
Thanks but I make adventure maps and a lot of people tend to download the map and expect all the rules to be inside but I will include rules in the description of the post when I finish the map.

Thinking of an idea- this sounds unlikely but 4J could implement some sort of voice recording music disk which is kind of like an Xbox Live voice message.
Unlikely, but i suppose it could happen. However, as downloading xBox maps requires hacking the system (which is against the TOS), I doubt 4J will implement a feature to support somethng that breaks the TOS.

About the best I can suggest is sending an email or even an xBox live message outside of the entire map.
