On PC I always mine at 12.6 because lava will never fall on your head but on Xbox there are whole numbers like 11,12 etc. and lava will still fall on you up until layer 16. What level is the best on xbox?
Between layers 10-16 , ive never found diamonds above layer 16 and below layer 10 i hit too much lava.
Could be different on other worlds though, im not sure.
Diamond spawns in the bottom 17 layers of the map. This should help everyone. It's from the PC version but should also apply to the Xbox version as well. Just cut the numbers back a bit because of the limited world size but it should still hold true.
Y coordinates on XBox are off by 4. You can demonstrate this by building a tower as high as possible, where your map will tell you the current height is 129, and by digging to the lowest layer of bedrock which the map will say is level 4. If you're lazy, go to the seashore and check your map to see that it's level 66, not 62.
So I always dig for diamonds on level 14, which is more accurately level 10.
Regardless, 14 does seem to be the Xbox's 10 as far as diamond hunting goes. I've found diamonds as high as y=21 on numerous occasions in the Quesadila seed, but overall, y=12-16 seems to be the best layers to search.
As I understand it, bedrock occupies the first 4 or 5 layers, so it really depends what you are using as your reference level, is it the first level without bedrock (which means you could be 4 or 5 out from the coords) or the real 'layer 0' which is coordinate based.
Actually, I believe in the xbox version there are only two layers of bedrock.

The whole number thing is because of the characters height and eye level. You're 1.6 because your eye level is 1.6 blocks tall. If you subtract 1.6 from 13.6, your feet are on level 12. Alternatively, if you're at 13.6 your chest is at layer 13. (edit: this is for PC coords, of course).
Not sure which method 4J's coords use, but I'd assume the second one.
I haven't really had a chance to experiment with the coords. I'd be interested to hear what the explanation to CDarklock and MobyGuy's discussion is. Sea level is usually 64, but can be 62. Top block is... 127, right? So 129 would be eye (chest) level. Is that how it works?

Layer 5? That, sir, is VERY helpful. XD

I think the sea level is off by 2 compared to the PC, not by 4. The map shows the position of your head, and when you are standing on the shore (2 blocks above water), the map shows Y=66. If you step down so you are just submerged, it shows your head is at Y=64, so the top ocean block is layer 64. In the PC, this top block is at layer 62 (see http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Layer).
Regarding mining safely around lava, the top lava block I've found is at layer 11 (if you were standing on the lava, which I don't recommend, your map would show Y=13). So yes, I agree that you want to mine while showing Y=14 on your map (you are actually mining layers 13 and 14 while standing on layer 12).
I don't think about layers, I purposely find caves, look for Lava with Redstone on the walls next to it, it's never, (I'm being serious) NEVER failed me.
I think Redstone is supposed to have the same generation rules as diamond - except it's not nearly as rare.

Coordinates for Y are taken from your characters head. If the sea level is 64 and you are standing on 64, then the space occupied by your legs is 65 and then the space occupied by your head is 66. That is how coordinates have always worked on the PC and that is how they work on the Xbox.
Just be careful and watch out for lava. Have a block ready to place incass you break through into some.

On the PC version two i think the best is 9-13 but i'm not sure

If you want the least lava 10-12
I would go with 9-13
Yes the 17 bottom the best but it rarely spawns at 15 it would be very hard at 17
Oh sorry
Lol but i dont know much about the xbox version
