Why is the "bake a cake" achievement called "The Lie"?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Yesterday I was on my way to class, when a black cat fell from the sky. I didn't really know what that nonsense was about so I asked him if I could step around him because he was bad luck, but he simply meowed and then disappeared. I was a bit worried that maybe he'd teleported to Afghanistan or somewhere equally dangerous, but a wizard came and assured me that it was alright. I threw my Zune at him because I was 78% sure he was lying. The wizard roared at me and sentenced my mother to thirty five years of chain smoking. I was sad.
Might be homage to the game Portal 2 where 'the cake is a lie' is seen scrawled on the wall in one of the hidden rooms.
I don't remember that happening in Portal 2 (which happens to be the only Portal game I've played), I think most of the cake references were in the original Portal game.
But as far as I know, in Portal, your character is promised cake for getting through all the tests, but in one room someone, who had probably learned the truth, had written "THE CAKE IS A LIE" on the wall. It exploded into a huge internet meme, which is how the achievement came to be called "The Lie"
Minecraft makes references to many things throughout, mainly in the splash on the title screen.
"The Lie" is a reference to the Valve game Portal.
While you play through the game, you are repeatedly promised cake after you complete the last puzzle, but along the way there are multiple hidden rooms created by an old laboratory worker Doug Ratman (sp?), who knows the truth about the robot for whom you are doing the puzzles.
While partially insane (presumably due to loneliness or a lack of medication), he hides throughout the test chambers and draws messages on the walls, one of which is an entire room dedicated to stating that the cake you are promised is not real, which--if found on the first playthrough--foreshadows what the player may later encounter.
"The Enrichment Center is required to remind you that you will be baked, and then there will be cake."
Edit: I've spotted a couple of people here who played Portal 2 but not the original Portal. So, do yourself a favor and buy Portal: Still Alive (currently 1200 MSP). Even though it's a short game, it's well worth that money. Trust me.
It's a simple reference from the popular puzzle/logic game Portal by Valve. (I highly recommend it!;) ) During the game, GLaDos encourages you to solve puzzles using cake as a motivating perk. When you have "broken out" of the game's testing phase (from threat of death), you find scrawls on walls of the testing centre warning you that "the cake is a lie".

This will help you learn about cake. Or not, it's up to you to learn or not.
