I am completely new to this game and I was wondering what tips or tricks you know of. A tip I can give you is use a bucket of lava in your fernece instead of coal. you can melt up to 64 to 100 things before it goes cold. you may lose a bucket but you still have enough coal to light a mine. (torches)
If you want the best mine: Dig down really far until you are about 4 blocks or so above bedrock, and just dig out hallways or however you want to do it. At that depth you have the best chance of finding Diamonds/gold/redstone etc...
Always carry a bucket of water. A waterfall makes a good way to get down without taking falling damage and puts you out if you catch fire. Although a water bucket won't help you in the nether. It's too hot and the water evaporates. Wheat is the best. Clumps of grass occasionally drop wheat seeds when mined. Villages are a good source of wheat, which can be crafted in to bread, replant the seeds and there you go, renewable food source with little effort. Once you have the materials, a clock and an item frame make a good decoration for your mainbase.
When mining obsidian and/or around lava in general:
- carry only what you need and PUT EVERYTHING ELSE AWAY
- carry a bucket of water in your hotbar
When mining diamonds, mine out all the blocks around the diamond block/chunk FIRST to be sure that you won't lose any to lava. Only mine the actual diamond block after it is safe.

Birds stop chirping. The wind dies down. Somewhere, a man is drinking a cup of coffee. He freezes, with the cup at his lips.

Use Lava, not coal.
I never knew about this one. Mhm, going to start doing this. Anywyays these are great tips. A tip I can give you is you need to have patience. When it comes to diamonds, they are not easy to find. But if you put the time and dedication, you will have stacks of diamonds in know time. What I usually do to find diamonds is mine all the way to down to 11ft (diamond level and usually you are right above the lava.) Then branch mine. Also, make sure you use your first three diamonds on a pickaxe and enchant it (high level) so you can get "Fortune III." With a "Fortune III" pickaxe you will get more diamonds out of each block.

Ex. Right side.
So when going back, just follow the torches on your left side.
Never dig straight up.
Never dig straight down.
(Even old hands get bit by that one).
