Hello, I am the founder of a team creating an original idea for a Minecraft server. We have created several plugins for this project, we have many great builders, but we are short one one very crucial part of the server.
In short, we're missing custom worlds.
Our team has been trying to solve this issue of custom realms for a while, but outside of World Paint (which would be a b*tch to make because it would have to be painted manually) and Terrain Control, we haven't found much that can alter block compositions and create randomly generated structure that we can design. Basically, we need four worlds whose biomes are different in each but fit a common theme:
World 1: Hell (called the rogue class[name could change])
World 2: Water (mage[name will change]{maybe hydro or something})
World 3: Dark (necromancer)
World 4: Air (savior)
Now I'll explain myself in case you're getting confused. Our goal is to have one world (approximately 10k by 10k border) for each of those classes that fit the theme of the class. I'd like to have the terrains in the biomes be different but still fit the theme, because if it's not possible to change them, that's fine. The world needs to be big since it's going to be a free world for each class, so World Paint isn't' a very viable option because of the amount that it can edit.
For example, in the rogue realm, we'll want to have a world similar to the nether but not actually the nether, because we'll want ores, trees (if we can modify trees and you guys know how to, please tell us!), and other necessary materials that a player needs, so that he won't have to travel into, let's say the necromancer realm for obsidian or to the hydro realm for water. I think that's about all I have to say that's very important to our server, but I have a few small things that would be nice if I saw some comments about these.
- We're thinking that the maps that we use will be set in the world type 'amplitude' to make things more epic
- Help us decide the class names, please!
- As stated above, we'd like custom builds (such as ruins) and/or trees for each world, so if anyone knows about that, let us know
So in essence, if you have any ideas at all, help us figure out how the heck can we do this please!
I think Terrain Control is a pretty good one if you can figure out how to use it. You mentioned it already, but the things people can make with it are quite amazing. It just takes time and effort I guess. If you are willing to spend money you can get world machine, the free version I don't think can make a big enough size for you. WM can be used for a lot of stuff, like Blender and Video Game map making in general, so it might be a waste to just buy it for MC. But besides World Painter and Terrain Control, it's the only other terrain generation program I know. It can make some cool stuff, like the attached picture (I made it with World Machine and World Painter). Of course, you need to combine it with worldpainter, because it generates heightmaps, so you might need a lot of RAM depending on how big your map is going to be. I really only suggest World Machine if you are planning on making a huge server, because it's expensive to buy for something your only going to use for Minecraft.
But if you don't want to get World Machine, I would just learn Custom Terrain because I think it can basically do what you want.
World Painter and Terrain Control should have custom structure support, with Terrain Control being able to actually change what grows from saplings if you use the plugin and not just its generation capabilities. Building hem should be easy, but you have to be good at building :P. Plus it could get repetitive if you only have a few types of ruins. Depending on the scope of your server, you could go through the world after generation and hand-make the ruins. They would fit better with the terrain and you could make specific dungeons and whatnot that fit with landmarks, like a waterfall cave or something. But i'd be a LOT of work.
In your situation, I would just learn as much as you can about Terrain Control. You can do custom terrain blocks and stuff, and I think it has everything you need. You can't do specific landmarks, like you can't make a special mountain in the middle of the map, you need WP or WM for that, but it should be able to make custom terrain pretty well. I hope this helped

Thank you very much for your help, @ WolfieWaffle!
No Problem. Good luck on the map!
