Title may seem a bit confusing, but... I have a problem. I'm working on a 1.9.2 texture pack* (*resource pack... I call it texture pack sorry.), starting first with mobs. The aim is to be a little more realistic while still in the more low res spectrum.
I've spent one and a half hours trying to get this 'variation' thing working (texture pack wise, you get dark grey cows sometimes, sometimes white, etc). I've looked through the normal guides that are present here on MCF, most notably this- but they don't work from my views. I've got Optifine 1.9.2 installed and have a new default Minecraft resource pack with only one mob changed. wolf, wolf2, wolf3, and wolf4.
Put the "wolf" in the wolf folder in the normal section (under entities)
I put the other 2, 3, 4 in: WIP Texture pack\assets\minecraft\mcpatcher\mob\wolf
Is it all supposed to be in one folder? or seperate folders under mob?
well, da mobs with multiple textures r in folders. for example, horses. wolf also has more than one texture which are wolf, tamed wolf, and angry wolf. so they are all in one folder

... I mean custom textures. Minecraft is already programmed to recognise the multiple textures in the default folders.
Basically inside your minecraft folder inside your texture pack your making
Than you have to make a folder if you dont have one already called mcpatcher
inside that folder you put a folder called mob
and than inside the mob folder you make a folder with the name of the mob you want to make skins for (sometimes you dont have to make a folder inside the mob folder i dont know why)
But anyways id do both so you put the different textures you want to make the mob so lets say cow into the cow folder for as many as you have
for example if you have 4 pictures you would name the pictures: cow2 cow3 cow4 cow5
don't name one cow1 because it will replace the original texture for the cow and if i were you id copy the ones in the cow folder and put them outside the cow folder too because sometimes minecraft cant read the folder named cow i dont know why
Now i also recently found out that you can make like for example if you want to make a ice cow texture you can make only that cow spawn in a snow biome
to do so inside and out of the cow folder you make a .properties file id suggest using notpad++ to do it
so you make a notpad++ document and inside you do something like this:
cold stands for snow i also have more biomes like you can put it in more biomes than 1 but where it says skins. put:
skins.2=(number of skins you want)
you have to put .2 because its the second biome on the list nad .3 for the third biome and so fourth
So theres more things you can do as you know winter is snow and now sand is desert jungle is jungle swamp is swamp and default is like grasslands and forest and oceans and stuff

Okay i don't know if this could help but im pretty sure it would
so if your trying to make like lets say a cow with many textures you would have to go to:
---------------------------------------------------------------
resourcepacks\YourPack\assets\minecraft
---------------------------------------------------------------
Basically inside your minecraft folder inside your texture pack your making

once your done filling it out safe the file as:
(the name of your mob).properties
and make sure where it says save as type make sure it says properties file
than save it id say desktop than you can put it in your mob folder that you created and inside the cow folder inside the mob folder
after you did all that the only way it will work is if you run optifine with the version of your resource pack and you should be all good
