I took a cracked dirt texture from cgtextures and posterized it down to black and white, then used the black part of that as a guide/overlay for my shading. I'm pretty inexperienced with using non-hardedge tools in GIMP, so it'll take some time before I settle on a style I like...
I like the concept of the dirt, but I feel like the highlights should be broken up more. It also seems a little weird how harsh and pixelated the cracks are.
Going to enter! Do we have to make every single texture or can we do just certain areas? (Items, mobs, blocks, etc.)
Nevermind. Forgot to read the rules thoroughly. Dx
Well, I decided to try something along the lines of "Nuclear winter"
Progress so far: Tallgrass, grass, and dirt.
(16x16, tiled 4x)

Nuclear winter - I like the idea. Can't wait to see more.
It is more like a new and experimental comic style i tried to create. I am not sure about it, what do you think?
@Peyton: amazing as always it reminds me somehow of summerfields.
I like that. A lot. EDIT: Stylistically speaking, I mean. I kind of agree with Drazile, it might not fit the theme. I'd be interested to see where you take it.
Whoops, I let myself be distracted by pretty textures.
THAT'S RIGHT FISH, YOU'RE BREAKING THE RULES. >:[
Oh, sorry. I'll admit I didn't read them all.

If that's grass, then what is your snow going to look like? (That is, if you do snow at all)
Snow could be like the full side of the block as snow or something lol

Or trash?
@Drazile: That's awesome
@FishyMint: Those are too good... them colors o:
I chose mobs and got to work on a snowman. I later realized that a pumpkin would show on top of the head. Is there a way to change this?
Make the pumpkin invisible, then have your pumpkin model pull the pumpkin texture from another file.

Snow will probably just be a-lot-taller-than-average snow.
Awesome textures so far, Shadow Forge.
Here is what I made for this challenge on stream last night. I won't be continuing, but it was fun to do something.
Grass overlay!
Left one is the raw texture file, and the right one is the planned color.
EDIT: Oops. Forgot to reply to someone else's texture.
Very nice. The texture style reminds me a lot of The End is Extremely Nigh.
And nice build to go along with it.
Very nicely done. Love the boarded up windows.
Those are some pretty spectacular textures. Shame it won't be finished :c
This time, I finished grass and made dirt.

I like how it looks, but it just takes way too much effort to make high-resolution skins
I probably won't continue.
Very nice, but it doesn't really feel 'apocalyptic'.
