Queens starting colonies is an awesome idea. Further thought about the Myrmex.
I have been researching ant farming lately, starting with the capture of wild queens, young queens who are running about and haven't settled down to begin a nest yet. You put the captured queen in a vile/ test tube half filled with water for drinking and humidity and plug the opening with a cotton ball, then stick the vile in a dark, warm place and forget that it exists for a few weeks. Just leave her alone. She lays her eggs and feeds and raises the first workers herself. Then you move the vile to a larger space, open it, and let them take the time to adjust, grow, and relocate.
This is what the idea is based on. In the Myrmex queen's chamber you find eggs. The lower casts are hatched from eggs that are laying about. . But sometimes you can find a larger queen egg. The queen egg can be picked up and it will hatch after awhile if you right click it and give it the proper conditions, such as darkness and enough space for the resulting queen. She will NOT be tame. The new queen will lay eggs and the workers will build the nest. So aside from starting with an egg instead of a queen it's pretty similar to real life.
I have another idea on behavior. Feeding. The thought is that since the soldiers follow the workers around the soldiers are always going to be around the workers. So if they come across livestock the soldier grabs it in its mandibles and kills it and the nearby workers pick up the meat and carry it back to the nest. So not only do you have to worry about them chewing up your home, now they'll slaughter your livestock just to add insult to injury.

Pretty cool! It would also be cool if the Queen eggs eventually hatched on their own,and the young queens would leave the colony and build their own somewhere else.

Considering the destructive nature of the colony perhaps not. I'd much rather the nest be a structure that spawns like a dragon lair or a desert temple. The structure and colony can start at perhaps a medium size when first found, but it grows when you are around much like villagers breeding and farming and zombies attacking them when you are in the vicinity. If you don't destroy it and you are close enough for the system to render the colony, it continues to grow in number and thus strength. A farmed queen however might be useful for their trading and resources as stated in their preview. It would be truly awesome to try and find ways to contain them, make farms, feed them, watch the nest grow, and develop culling machines.
Another thing to consider is what happens when myrmex controlled by different queens meet.
Sorry, but as previously mentioned I've been getting into researching the real thing lately and its spilling over into ideas for this mod. Can't tell you how many times I nearly called them ants.
But I know that the dragons are the main focus of the mod. This is a concept that almost deserves its own mod and I'm glad that new releases will be in the form of addons.
Edit: This is one design for what a serious formicarium and outworld set up looks like for REAL ant farming. The nest (formicarium) is usually kept dark and has been uncovered for the picture.
Those science project kits you can get at the toy store are nice for learning ant keeping, but the ants you send away for are all workers and no queen and they die of old age within a few months or so. The above is an example of one type of farm I would try for Myrmex if they can be farmed at all. If we can't catch eggs then perhaps we can still bottle in a wild queen and build around her or make elaborate displays in creative.
Btw does this mean wild dragons are going to be hostile to each other? Is it just against the other type (ice vs fire) or are dragons of the same type also going to fight?

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
Also since we're talking about myrmex, their hives should contain amber, like in this suggestion. You could obtain it either by mining from their hive (which would turn them hostile) or trading them food for resin and then crafting that into amber.
Perhaps deeper in the hive, one may find ancient amber that the myrmex have kept unspoiled for millenia, and whatever long dead creatures may lie within that amber... (sorry for all the F/A related suggestions but I had to lmao)
You know I just have to stick my foot in my mouth! The OCD, I Sware It!
I have the same question. Will they learn to distinguish between players? I know that this is all just thinking into the far future considering that the initial, core release isn't out yet, but it's still fun to speculate on what might be.
I might be making mymrex ant farms for the fun of it, so just how big are they? Like hit box blocks? 2x2x2? I can't make propper tunnels/ passages without knowing how much room to give them to pass one another. (Edit: And size could be used to entrap a queen in one artificial chamber and allow all the others to escape.)
That brings up another point, depending on how they build their nests they'll need the ability to squeeze past one another's hit boxes. I don't know if that's something that'll have to be special coded, but otherwise it'll be like when two cows try to get through the same gate. And being able to squeeze closer together would make it easier for them to swarm you.

I'll make it so they can collide with other entities like normal, but cannot collide with other myrmex. 2X2X2 would be a "block estimate", but in reality, it would be something like 1.8X1.7X1.8.
Yes, it is frozen cobblestone.
That's silver piles, the ice dragon's version of gold piles.
Those are the bones of an ice dragon it just killed.
Smart enough to realize another sentient being, and smart enough to capitalize on it.

Do all the casts share that size or is there a cast that can't fit into a 2x2x2 space? I ask because I would like to make rooms/ tunnels where certain kinds can't enter/ escape if possible.

i left this thread alone for around two days, literally two days, and now there is a ton of new stuff, like the "casts" and the "Myrmex" mfw
(also i dunno of this is too many memes, but its kind of my feelings right now, and i dont even know how to describe my feelings appropriately, yeah.)
It's far future stuff, the core release isn't even out yet so for the most part this is all speculation.
has the mod been released or are these just snap shots?
Nice!

We have reached maximum hype levels!

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now

PixelQuest 2, my new 1.10 RPG/rougelike-inspired modpack, is coming soon!

Mymrex are probably going to be intelligent as well, so maybe "befriending" a local hive could be a possibility.
In the 2nd picture, is that frozen cobblestone?
and what is that stackable granite/wool looking stuff laying around?
is that where the dragon crapped bones everywhere, or what is that?
How intelligent,exactly?

Yes, it is frozen cobblestone.

The perfect end all answer! I'll give it a rest.
Ice and Fire: Dragons in a whole new light
"Myrmex" actually refers to ants.

btw: mod looks good
