Before anyone replies with links to npc mods, or says something about there already being one, I just want to say I already know.
First, i just want to say that multiplayer is nice, for some people. Personally, not for me. I know there are other people out there who feel the same as I do when I say that it just isnt all that fun being on actual multiplayer. Because first, you have to find a server. then, you gotta deal with the non stop chatty players filling up your screen with unnecessary text. On top of that, most servers have locked blocks due to griefers and trolls. Then the beggers... wont even say anything about them.
I also already know about millenaire, and custom npcs, and minebuilder, and all of the sorts.
What im actually suggesting is something... better? I dont want to say anything to make those modders feel insulted, suffice to say i just wasnt satisfied with those mods. They didnt have enough... presence to them. You had to interact with these mods to really get them going and it felt so fake.
So here's my suggestion, and ill lay it out real nice for yaz.
Passive npcs. In this mod suggestion, npcs behave like steve (you).
They spawn about as often as villages do, but not always in villages. Most of the time they spawn on their own, though away from villages. Biome doesnt matter, besides water obviously.
Like steve, they have a limited inventory in which they fill up with items and blocks they have gathered. Some npcs will be pre-set to be farmer types or fighters or miners. All npcs will still do each thing, but with each... uh... Class? (lol) the npc will be more focused on that specific trait even though they occasionally do everything else still.
For example, a Farmer type npc will mostly do farm type stuff like growing crops (not able to plant crops without the proper seeds or items).
Harvesting, etc etc. The farmer, however, will still do other things sometimes like mine, but not that far. They will fish sometimes, but not often.
They will also build, though as a farmer, they wont build that many amazing things. things like huts, or small homes. (ill explain more of this further into the post)
A miner, obviously will mine. As a miner, he will gather items to craft his own set of tools/armor/weapons, etc etc so that he may adventure into the earth to dwarf it out (tee hee). He still builds too, like the farmer. Unlike the farmer, however, he can build stronger structures since he has access to better materials. he still fishes and farms too but not as extravagantly as the farmer.
The fighter! Ah... this guy... he's the guy who actively seeks out monsters to kill. Like actual players, he is fully aware of his health, constantly making sure he is in top physical form. This guy also farms, builds, fishes, etc etc like any other player. The basic survival stuff. y'know?
Unlike the other types of npcs, though, this guy fights offensively, whereas everyone else fights defensively to protect themselves and their structures.
At this point, I think everyone gets the idea of what im going for in this suggestion.
ok, heres the important stuff i wanna talk about.
There are male and female characters, skins customizeable by the player, obviously xD (i hate a lot of skins, myself. im very picky)
If a male npc and a female npc get along well enough, theyll get married and start a family (much like sim-u-kraft) except that in this case, npc's dont actively seek each other out under normal circumstances, but can still interact with each other if they actually meet (which is pretty rare)
The idea behind this mod suggestion is that npcs behave like actual players but only in the Overworld and Nether. If they seek out the End, it kinda ruins it for the actual player. You see, the point of this suggestions is not to make it easier on the player, but to add presence to single player.
The npcs would never work FOR the player, but rather for themselves. Depending on the situation, npcs might decide to start a civilization or a military or a trading post.
Look, ill be honest. Im not the smartest person alive. in fact im smart enough to know just how dumb i can be most of the time. i have a very small vocabulary and im terrible at talking to people. worst of all, im bad at talking period.
I just wish you could all see this suggestion in my head. I cant possibly put the correct words here to describe the kind of mod im suggesting. i can actually see in my head, npc's spawning into the world with you, the player. I can see them punching trees and making a crafting table. I can see them mining that table after their done with it so they can move on to a new area to survive. I see a farmer coming into contact with a testificate village and harvesting a couple spuds or carrots to take back to his home and plant them. i can see another npc trading with a testificate.
its not that i dont like multiplayer, because i really dont. its annoying. what it is, is that... why should we have to be alone in single player?
i see people saying "Hey, don't post a herobrine thread!" and... you know, i get it. but lets be honest. if he was real, even if he terrorized you all the time, its gotta be better than being alone. it sounds kina lame, i know. it sounds rather pathetic and i get it. but when it comes down to it, and you shut your game off for the night, wouldnt you appreciate it if, when you logged on the next day to play your world, there was more than just cows and creepers?
I know I would appreciate it. As im building my own house i see an npc trader making his way towards a newly founded city that 2 or more other npcs decided to start. a city where the npcs actually worked together to defend, to support, and expand the city?
Npcs who don't stupidly fall into a hole another npc just made, or trip into lava because they were following you or something.
npcs who actually behaved like real people.
I know, AI is hard to do but there has to be something better than what we have already. Something more... Real.
I doubt anyone will take this post seriously, or even consider it to be a good idea. I doubt any modders would team together to try this.
To be honest, im mostly just posting this as a sort of catharsis.
1stly, there are Custom npc mod here, 2ndly, there are MANY plugins of it on craftbukkit
I'm well aware of the limited npc mods that already exist. First, there's the custom npcs mod which adds rpg type npcs to the game that can only be created via a wand made from bread and sticks. On top of that, they don't do anything until you right click on them with the wand and designate what kind of npc they are.
next, there's the minecraft builders mod which adds a few types of npcs to the game who have a limited number of buildings they can build. on top of that they arent very smart. you still have to interact with them via a sign to make them do anything significant.
humans+ mod which is similar to minecraft builders. sim-u-kraft which is heavily dependant on player-npc interaction. You have to build construction blocks and supply them with materials for them to do anything.
The best one I can find is millenaire but it adds so much complexity and custom content that, to be perfectly honest, i was never able to fully understand. I had to sit and watch as their villages stopped expanding after a certain point. But even so, it felt so artificial.
I should mention that I already made this point in my original posting. i already know about these mods and im not satisfied with them. thats why i requested this.
This sounds like a cool idea. I'm guessing no one has done it, because this type of AI is not built into the game and is likely difficult to achieve.
I am having fun modding, because I can create something new in game, but probably like most modders here, we don't have the skills to create something like this. I imagine this type of mod could take a year or more to create if done by one person.
Would be cool to see. I can imagine different types of NPCs. Some that want to help you out or would at least cooperate with you. Others that would be openly hostile to you. They would damage or steal your stuff. They could be competitive with you also. It could be you against them. Would add a whole new aspect to the game. They would never be as challenging as a real player, but like you, I do like to play against an NPC in game.
Many games have several styles of play, the tutorial, the quests, playing against NPCs, and PvP. This game currently has like 2 of the 4 types some games have.

Doesn't mean we can't try. I mean, any start is a good start. Something as basic as seeking out trees and punching them for their wood would be a great start. I don't know much about Minecraft and how it works, but I would assume that there aren't actual trees in Minecraft, but rather log blocks and leaf blocks simply generated in that relative shape.
That being said, the npc would probably try to harvest logs from the player's house, which would be a huge annoyance.
Unless there's a way for the mod to tell if a block was placed by a player/npc, I don't really see a way to prevent that. It wouldn't be any different from a griefer. The only real difference is they don't trololol you while they're doing it.
Believe me, I get enough trolling from the Orespawn mod now that it has freaking ant troll ore blocks. You think you're mining diamonds when SUDDENLY ANTS! And they want your sausage if you know what I mean.
At some point I might want to try something like this, but currently I'm working on 3 different teams making mods. I also have 2 mods of my own which I may never finish. I'm a bit over-extended at the moment

Total support.
Minecraft does feel to empty of intelligent life.
I don't see why their aren't people just like yourself who build and mine and fight.
I don't see why you can't be in a team with a simulated player that cooperates with you.
Asks favours, requests items and vice versa.

Yes I would love to see this
