Wait wait wait, where do I put the pedestals, what's an Infusion Altar, how do I stabilize?
Have you not performed any Infusions yet? Have you unlocked that in the Thaumonomicon, in Artifice? You'll need at least a cursory knowledge of -regular- Infusion before you can do Self-Infusion.
it's less for cheating death and more for dying on purpose and coming back with super powers...
When asked why anyone would find the Soul Beacon useful since it's basically a one use bed TheKentington responded that it would be a way for hardcore players to avoid permadeath. This was early on though, so self-infusion may not have existed yet.

Watch a mod spotlight on Thaumcraft and gain a cursory knowledge of its mechanics before you start diving into addons, recommend I. Infusion is a pretty core mechanic of TC. You need crystal clusters, tallow candles, and mob heads for stabilization. Place them symmetrically around the altar or vat- more symmetricity means less instability. Use lots if Creative, as many as possible if Survival.
It won't do anything if the items on the pedestals don't correspond to an existing infusion recipe. For instance, the water-breathing one requires two fish and two water breathing potions, and of course a readied effigy inside.

Ohhhhhhh all right. I though I had to put the actual "Self: -myeh watever-" item in there. All right thanks.

Maker of multiple vanilla mods, like these:
Link Removed - Overhauls survival with steeper difficulty curve
Things keep popping off pedestals, some flux just spawned, blocks are breaking, and I believe I saw a bit of lightning. ???
That's the result of infusion instability, which can be mitigated with skulls, crystals, candles, etc. placed around the altar.
EDIT: It'd be interesting to have some sort of intensely powerful stabilizer block in this mod, so you can have a bit less cluttered setup at the cost of the expenses.
I suspect the mechanics may not have a way to check for a "power" of the stabilizers. It just checks if the item acts as a stabilizer, and if it is properly paired.

Idea: what if it spreads 'ghost blocks' that act as stabilizers, but are invisible/intangible? Visually uncluttered that way, although it'd occupy block spaces.
I has a suggestion. A Focal sword. It would take a foci and use it for mele uses instead of ranged. It would have 3 teirs, but lets start with the first one to start off. It would be a golden focal sword. It is made with a golden wand cap in the bottom left, then a greatwood rod in the middle and a golden ingot in the middle right. And finally a golden ingot on the top middle. It would cost 32 of ignis, terra, aqua, and aer. Then 25 of perdidtio and ordo.
All right, fixed the Sieve, and got the villager. Now how do I get the villager out of the vat?

Use a Warded Jar on one of the ports on the bottom, then place the filled jar and bop it with a wand. Ta-da!
I didn't need him in my world, just out of my vat. I'll put him with the rest of my er... specimens...

Now, how do I self-infuse as I've asked before? All it tells me is "Perform the desired infusions", how do I perform infusions?

If you want to infuse something in a vat, be it a creature or Corpse Effigy/new body, here's what you do:
1. Put the Modified Infusion Matrix over the top hatch of the vat.
2. Set up pedestals around the vat, as you would a regular Infusion Altar. Stabilize as necessary.
3. Connect essentia jars to the bottom hatches of the vat with tubes.
4. Place items on the pedestals, like a regular infusion.
5. Smack the matrix with your wand.
6. Hope nothing blows up in the process.

Should I put crystal or native clusters? Also, how should I place the candles?

The wand is doing absolutely nothing on the modified runic matrix.

It has instability, put things like crystal clusters, candles, and skulls in there. that should stabalize it a bit

Literally every block in like a 9x9 radius of the thing was a candle, head, cluster, or pedestal. And they were all symmetrical.
