So basically now minecraft:stone will only match minecraft:stone. But stone will match any block with stone in it's name. Let me know if this works better.
Excellent and elegant solution. Works perfectly and resolves the issue.
I'm sorry, I read it but am still confused on how to not view certain blocks, all I really want is to see are Chests, Torches, Rails, Redstone dust, Gold, Iron Diamond, and Emeralds...

Anyone figured a way to get this to work with Multi MC? Adding it via their jar mod doesn't seem to work - creates a json and all but doesn't ever get loaded (no options in Control). Everything else I drop in there seems to work fine - Optifine and InventorySorter. Seems to be that much more difficult with the move to inheritance versus modified jar. I've been farting around with modifying json files (+libraries) and manually copying class files into the minecraft.jar for the Multi MC instance I've setup - still nothing.

I'm going to be reworking the installer to automate all of this soon so all you'll have to do is click a MultiMC button.
But for now, here's how to do this manually:
1. Place the downloaded XRay file into MultiMC\libraries\net\minecraftxray\xray\4.0.3 and rename it to XRay-4.0.3.jar
(note: this is for the latest verson of XRay: 4.0.3)
2. Now navigate to MultiMC\instances\<instance name>\patches (if it doesn't exist, create it) and create a new file called "XRay.json"
Just tried the latest beta and love the new features and it seems to run well for me. I'm going back to 3 since the fly feature is one of my most utilized features. It was a little bit of a learning curve since the last version I used was v2.13. I will say that the xray.txt was a little distracting since some of the #lines were on the same lines as the exclusions; I had to backup for a second to grasp was I was looking at.
I too would love to see the extended compass coordinates if it is possible such as North-West. I believe my directions were lower cased as well.
In the latest 4.03 beta I had this on the key config screen; was looking for fly duh.

* I'll look into the multiple keybindings problem.
* Fly will be added back soon.
* I agree the default XRay.txt file is a little overwhelming - I'll see about simplifying it a bit.
* After I get everything else done, I'll see if I can make an 'extended compass'

That was pretty close to what I was trying prior (based on what I found on Multi MC's Wiki), with the exception I had just dropped the file under libraries\xray\4.0.3 though I must have mis-keyed something else because at least now it's trying to load, though it's failing (with 1.8.7):
[20:17:07] [main/INFO]: Loading tweak class name net.minecraftxray.loader.XRayTweaker
[20:17:07] [main/INFO]: Using primary tweak class name net.minecraftxray.loader.XRayTweaker

** Updated **
Disregard - figured out the issue. I'd updated to the 0.4.8 dev build which apparently broke some things. Rolled back to 0.4.7 and all is happy. Thanks for the assistance!
v4.0.0 (2015-06-03)

- Added support for 1.8.4, 1.8.5, and 1.8.6
- Made crash dumps more useful
- Improved stability
- Changed how fullbright works for better compatibility with 3rd party mods
- Cleaned up a lot of the codebase
- Changed block config AGAIN
- Rewrote a lot of installer code to scale better as more versions of Minecraft come out
- Temporarily removed fly to push update out faster

The tooltip in NEI (Not Enough Items) is the funtion that tells you what block you're looking at,...
I tried {block ID} and {tooltip} but they don't work! Well In game it will say the words put in config!
Oh, I think I misunderstood. Currently there's no feature like that, however I may add one soon - I like the idea.

It should. Try the latest beta version and let me know if you have an issues.

so if for instance I were to put ore would it show all ores?
It would show any blocks with "ore" in their name, which would include gold_ore, iron_ore, diamond_ore, etc.
