Just let us use both. Gauntlet and wands. And not that gauntlet will be any better, just different.
Using them both is just remaining attached wands, I feel that having them both with different functions is like having a broad sword and a kanata, they kind of feel different and don't blend as seamlessly as wands, staves, and scepters. If we were to have a utility item and offence item it should be staves and scepter, not wands and gauntlets as the flavor clashes.
The "vis battery" concept suggested to work in pairing with Gauntlets also is good for other things. Being able to store and transport vis is something I think a lot of people have wanted at some point or another, and 'maigc containers' has a lot of logical springboards for things like, say, anti-taint bombs.
What? No, I'm not crossing my fingers for better ways of fighting the expanded Taint. That would be silly of me.
I have an idea how you could add the gauntlets but also keep the wands. Maybe there could be two kinds of foci. Wand foci for utility and mining and gauntlet foci for fighting and movement. I think those functions would fit very well to these different tools and you could also switch a bit easier from working to fighting.
if wands were to be replaced by a new era of artifact baubles, a possible replacement for all of the offensive thaumaturges out there could be a weapon hilt that accepts foci as socketed amplifiers. ie. pulling out your hilt, and suddenly vwoosh a sword/spear/bow crackling of void/vis energy appears. easy to wrap enchantment system around this kind of tool selection (foci manipulator). so while using a magitech/steampunk glove, thats been devised of your own theorems, you would stumble upon ancient artifacts from older times, and would be able to "rediscover" ways to manipulate your gauntlet, taking inspiration from the surrounding world and the artifacts you unearth. would tie in nicely with the new research system, encouraging people to explore to find new artifacts to unlock more utility/defensive mechanisms within their gaunlet, all the while pursuing the truth behind how the world ticks, how aura comes into play, and eventually perfecting the art of creating foci imbued memoralia/baubles. eventually delving into the void, cultists etc, finding the answers as to why the previous inheritors of the artifacts you've discovered have dissipated. or you could just keep wands

This is a great idea ,if we have gauntlets, I don't see why we need wands or staves in addition to them. Your idea for a weapon replacement is awesome. Perhaps a foci that begins with no power, like a blank slate of some sort, but through the focal manipulator could turn it into a axe or sword focus. Once placed into a tool would project a tool of pure vis, additional modifications to the focus could add additional capabilities.
I can't help but see wands as a 'functional basics' tool. You've managed to channel heat, cold, and various other magics through it, but in the end you're still using the equivalent of a magical flashlight. You can do a lot with it, but it's all been relatively basic.
Gauntlets strike me as being made for more finesse. You have a lot more direct control over what you're doing now.
Gauntlets of Excavation could start out as the standard beam. Upgrade it to allow manipulation; move one block instead of just breaking it and putting it somewhere else.. Then turn the excavation beam into a tractor beam; bring the blocks to the user instead of having to walk over to them. And instead of having to completely alter the fundamental nature of a focus, you're training yourself to use different hand gestures.
Fire gauntlet starts out as just a burst of fire, but you can tweak some wires on the thing and focus it into a lava-hot ray. Hold the fire in your hands long enough, and you can lob it at the enemy instead.

Fire Gauntlet? I thought this system died in favor of TC4 modularity?
This sounds interesting and amazing--and makes a touch more sense. Though the Vis shard/battery idea sounds awesome, too. Maybe there can be some form of vis storage that looks like floating glyphs around the player? Like the ones from the old runic shield. Just a bunch of glyphs floating in the air around the player/casting gauntlet, as a form of representation over just how much Vis you have access to.
Would it be possible to prioritize draining the player's carried Vis when the aura is low/empty, while if the aura is dense with magic, the aura gets drained first?
Also, seriously wanting to see this get released. I am itching to have some magic--though I doubt it'll come out before my classes start up at this point. Thankfully, my weeks won't be too busy. =P
Because you have to have some direct connection between your body and the device you use to channel your will (your aura, if you will) through.
Having the gauntlet as a "medium" between you and the device, would completely negate any of the "precision" advantages that the wand might have over the gauntlet. Holding an ordinary stick in your Gauntlet might even be more effective.
Holding some kind of metal weapon in your gauntlet though... that might allow you to channel the power of the gauntlet directly through the (ordinary) weapon (of course only Thaumium would come anywhere near "durable" when doing this).
Right, gotta pay attention not to accidently use the fire focus from my gauntlet on the object in my hand, too.
I am thinking of something like a thaumium sword, except with no real handle, but a pure thaumium shape designed to be locked into the gauntlet for channeling?
Though generally I agree with the suggestions that gauntlets be a wand replacement, and that they be purely for the chanting of vis, with items such as vis stones being for long term storage, I wonder, is there any possibility of storage native to the player themselves? I think that an inherent vis battery equivalent to an iron capped wooden wand that could only be recharged via channeling devices such as gauntlets, and which was directly augmented in recharge speed and storage capacity by equipping certain wearables, would provide some flexibility for those stick in a vis-poor area.
It would also open up the possibility of carrying from health, should such a mechanic be doable.

The best reply to the above is probably "Shut up, you fool!"
Maybe vis stones should become a mandatory, early game necessity. Although manipulating the vis in the aura directly would be convenient, I always find myself trying to budget my vis expenditures in places where the aura levels are below satisfactory. Using vis stones (and perhaps expanding them with a tiered system) would allow cautious players to get their fill of vis in places where it is plentiful, and avoid placing unnecessary strain on the aura near their bases etc.

Problem with wands and stuff drawing directly from the aura and having the insane capacity they have is that magic is right now spammable wherever you go.
Honestly I have not been happier than I was when I got my grapple focus, but maybe the grapple spam, too needs to go...
I think the gauntlets are a great chance to diversify the focus system. What if, instead of making a focus of excavation, or a focus of chain lightning, you simply research "Terra focus" and "potentia focus" ("ignis focus, gelum focus, permutatio focus" etc) which allows you to channel vis with yhen characteristics of that aspect. Then, separately, you research different handsigns such as "utility" "projectile" "beam" "self" and "touch", which then let
You decide how to use your focus. A Terra focus with the utility handsign would function like an excavation focus, but switch into the attack handsign and you're lobbing spikes of earth at creepers. Ignis could smelt ores, melt stone or glass and then be turned around to be used as a flamethrower. Potentia can emit a Redstone signal or electrocute your enemies. Permutatio is equal trade but with a little extra study you can use it to switch places with your enemies.
Allowing the handsigns to dictate the flavor of magic coming from a more general focus would not only reduce inventory clutter, but also really allow the player to feel like they're experimenting with all the different uses for a specific kind of aspect. Just my 2 cents
I like this idea. The handsigns being, of course, somewhat specific to the focus being used. Pulling 'fire' to yourself being different from say, pulling 'water' to yourself. It's one thing to douse yourself if you're on fire, that's useful... covering yourself in fire, not so much. But giving yourself a 'burning touch', now that has practical use!
And of course, you could have 'levels' of handsign. Like, novice, journeyman, and master. A novice handsign 'works', but not with some caveats and a hiccup every so often; you need to either practice or research to get up to journeyman, and more of the same for mastery. I think that could be a really neat mechanic; you actually have to USE the focus and handsign, accept the negative effect of, say, the fire focus occasionally setting you or blocks around you on fire while you're practicing. As opposed to simply 'knowing' the handsign because you read the proper notes.

Ooh, how about
Gauntlets(TM): A hands on approach to magic!
or
Gauntlets: The power is in your hand!
or even
Gauntlets: Coming to grip with your powers.
This is awesome

Even without wands, we need at least a Staff of some sort.
