Yes though it might take a while, as Ill need to rewrite quite a bit. Ive had a look at the code earlier today and it looks like Ill need to change quite a bit. It does look like it will be way more compatible than before in 1.8.

So... does anyone have any clue how long that might take?
Also, how long should it take for the update? And will the mod self-update or will we need to download again?
EDIT: Can there be independently-sized wings and such?
That depends on how much time Noppes has available to work in his free time coding, and how easy/hard re-coding for new 1.8 will be.
As far as how long it will take for Forge, you'd have to ask them over at that project, that's really something completely separate..
As far as independently sized wings, do you mean two wings, each of a different size, or wings that can be scaled on their own accord from the player's model?
Since the wings are nothing more than a mirror image of one another, I don't think that scaling them individually is going to happen.
Nor do I really see an option to scale them separate from the model either, and I think this applies to anything that doesn't "replace" an option of the player model. (Like different leg options)

So I messed around a bit with the skinURL function. HD skins are working just fine for me with the skinURL feature:
But then, I did something else! I tried making an added body part HD as well:
Something I did not know, is that some of the extra parts ALSO seem to work with HD skins (in this case, the "fin" part can even be made HD).
Tested this with a 128x64 skin, though I'm sure other sizes should work. Might be slow on this, but I thought this was fascinating, haha.
HELP!! i want my skin to have antennas f but that turns by body into steve but the one called player antennas f dose not show up can some 1 plz post a skin guid
Edit: added a phot of the 1 that uses the skin file

I actually messed around with this stuff when version 2 of the mod came out. I didn;t try parts out. But the only part I found that didn;t seem to work properly is that if you choose a solid hair style it still only really work if a full 2x2 area is filled along the edge. Else it looks weird. I am pretty sure I put a picture at some point on here about that.
update: reloged my skin is mine but its then flashes and turn to steve
The skin to steve issue is a well known bug and is being worked out. The new skin system is a tricky one, but should hopefully be resolved for the 1.8 version of MPM.
As far as the player texture antenna not showing, I'm afraid I'm no help in saying where that texture is.. No one has yet managed to create a texture map for the skin/parts map yet. Using a player file texture for a part, I don't believe resolves the skin issue either, but I wouldn't quote me on that one. I use both player texture parts and default texture parts on my model. Though I rarely see the Steve skin bug.

well then im the first to do so check my post above for the link
um in that test version how do i take my hat off? i like the old gui
Oh the headwear option? I guess I forgot about that :P. Nobody likes change Im aware, though in my option this makes it easier to switch out parts and fixes the issue of the gui being too full of buttons.
If you don't like the new gui Ill need some constructive feedback about what you dont like. That way I can fix it. Though Im not going back to the old gui. There was simply no more space for extra options and with these lists there is infinite space.

From the last time I checked, vanilla 1.8 has an option to turn that off, then the headwear option could go definitely. I agree with keeping the GUI as clean as possible.
As to the new GUI, it's very good. I like this more, but I'd like to point out something:
It's no longer possible to rotate the character preview. You could take advantage of the new UI and implement something like what Modular PowerSuits mod has, you can rotate the model with the mouse. The old way still suffices though.
The Edit Buttons page is missing a Back button [x] and ESC doesn't work. I'm then forced to close Minecraft.
The character creator can't save the "Pattern" value. Example: Parts > Horns > Pattern = 2, reload the game or reload the config, pattern resets to 1.
In Parts, the color swatch is labeled "Player Skin".
Improvement: it would be even better if I can edit or overwrite an existing config. Currently I have to save the config with different name every time I change something and delete the older ones.

1) Ah yes I was planning to add a slider hadn't gotten to it yet
2,3) Thanks for reporting will fix
4) Sure I can do that. I was going to rewrite the config saving anyway to allow for server sided configs as well.
1.8 has the option to turn off headwear? Was not aware :P. Im still going to have to include it though for the solid option

Not only the headwear, the 1.8 skin system allows you to add a 2nd skin layer to ever body part and turn them off individually: body (jacked), right and left arms (sleeves), right and left legs (pants) and head (hat). Go to Game Menu > Options > Skin Customization. A Solid config option to be applied globally is enough.
Still on fixes:
in Parts, the color swatch is labeled "Player Skin".
When I'm "sleeping" or crawling, the player model is not centered at the actual position of the player. You can see this in the 3rd person view.
EDIT:
Out of curiosity: is there any plans to include compatibility with the Player API and Render Player API? I'm asking it because I use Galacticraft mod which requires those APIs to be compatible with MPM mod.

I think this has been requested numerous times. It would be kind of neat, but I don't see this happening any time soon.

Crawling and sleeping seems pretty centered to me.
Actually with the new minecraft skin options, comes code to more easily edit the players model. So it will be a lot more compatible in 1.8
