Well a key aspect of learning mapmaking right now is: Command Blocks, as well as the new types, Repeating and Conditional. I recommend you look at Jragon014; he has a lot of tutorials and basics that are really easy to understand. His website as well, which is linked in his YouTube channel, has a great list of tutorials made by him. You should watch them all.
Knocked out Chimarian Memories I, took me a little under six hours to do. Played -mostly- vanilla 1.10 (FTB Unstable doesn't change much for CTM but adds a lot of quality of life stuff), but I liberally used Journeymap's teleport feature just to get between intersections, I'm not too patient with backtracking.
It's a good starter map. It's rough in parts, there's WorldEdit brush strokes that don't reach every block (random bits of glass here and there that didn't get recolored, etc). Resources were provided abundantly (except for the enchanting table, that was late) to gain traction in the first two intersections, but past that point, I didn't need much more than the chain armor I'd picked up off the stormthingers, an iron glitch sword, a water bucket, and my shield. And food, lots of food. Dungeons were really small in-and-out things once you got some momentum; it just wasn't feasible to stand around and slash up mobs when they'd spawn quicker than you could deck 'em. The few traps early in were very telegraphed and then they vanished altogether past the third intersection. There's a lot of experimental touches with command blocks and custom mobs/equipment.
I found it easy, but I'm a seasoned player. For a player new to CTM, it throws some curveballs and punishes a straightforward approach to dungeons, which is why I'd absolutely suggest it to a new player. The potionmaking you can whip up by intersection 2 will help heaps for the blazes, ghasts, and lava you'll end up across (fire resistance), the regeneration potions you can milk out from the invisible ghasts' tears in I1 will give you sticking power when you have to spend time in combat. Waterbucket moves you across drops, gaps, lava, upwards, away from mobs, and out from flames. Use your tools!
I think I died less than eight times, and half of those were to the pig-maniacs in the black wool dungeon. I subverted them not by climbing on trees, but by sticking to the left wall and running behind the stonebrick pillars. I felt like I was thumbing my nose at the map a little by running that dungeon naked, hah. I really enjoyed that food was provided abundantly if you stopped to stick your nose in the chests scattered everywhere. Never had to farm carrots or potatoes or whatever, I'd take a stack of snacks with me and stuff my face as I ran. As a slight hoarder, the storage room was terrific.
Weakest points were the dagger cliffs and whatever that ice dungeon were. Compared to the other dungeons, they were pointlessly large. Ice dungeon was confusing (took a few passes to find intersection 3), and the danger was subverted entirely in the dagger cliffs by going anywhere but the designated road.
Guess I've got map number two to scale next, see you there.
Amazed that you played that in 1.10 and didn't die 600 times.

Hey I'm working on a magic themed area for my CTM map and I'm not really feeling the red stained clay/stone mix. Anyone got any suggestions? The area is gonna be called 'Magician's Apprentice'. Here's a screenshot of it so far. (Just started today)
I was told I would get feedback really fast on this thread. The only response I've gotten so far is someone telling me the quality of the photo isn't good. Am I the only one who has way too much time on their hands? Geez, I'll probably complete my CTM map before I get a response saying, "not enough detail, me not likey"

If it helps any, it's still a forum - it won't be instantaneous. Additionally, if you do want "fast", we have a community Discord server where you can chat with people who are currently online who may not be checking the thread currently.

Yeah, forums move slowly. If 2-3 days is so long to wait for feedback, definitely come try the community discord, although it is a lot less serious.
As for your area, I really like the lava tower, it has a nice shape to it. The rest of the structure though is bland and rectangular. Try adding some color to it and making that right edge not align with the portion in the back, that will add some depth. Also, the stalactites in the ceiling are thin and it looks weird. Instead of a straight line, try flaring them out with a 3-5 block wide base that tapers down to the tip. It's a good start though, and again, I'd say join the discord if rapid response is what you want.
Hey there all. Sorry I haven't been about too much-work, and I'm still trying to move out of the house I'm living in. Looking for a new place to live, alongside getting a new desktop for Minecraft, and fervertly trying to find time to not go insane.
Speaking of not going insane. I was thinking of streaming later on this early evening, at about 6:00pm EST. Feel free to join me while I figure out my next moves in Myriad Caves.

Nightmare Fuel: Legacy of the Night (By TheXhen in 1.8)
Difficulty: 8
Overall Enjoyment: 7
This review does contain spoilers, so be wary if you have not played It yet. In the possibility that you haven't given the map a spin, I recommend you go do so.
Although there is a handful of dungeons I disliked, namely, Alchemical Warfare and Silence of the Nest, the areas were well-crafted and beautiful. The designs of the environments and structures was one of the map's main strong points. Because of how brilliant the areas looked, none of them felt like "Just another basic castle area" despite the use of some generic themes. The map combined the great aesthetics with ambient details that simply felt at home where they are, which helped the different areas feel alive. For instance, I particularly released a morbid chuckle at the sight of an armor stand farmer being hanged in an undead farm. Minor additions like these is what really set the areas in this map apart from others.
That's enough praise, let's get into some criticism because that is more fun.
Earlier I discussed how the areas didn't feel like your same old, same old. However, one thing is holding that statement back. That thing - it is everywhere. That thing - there is no escaping it. That thing - will gradually start to infuriate you the farther you get into the map. That thing - is guardians. "I swear, if this area contains more guardians, I am going to... OH FOR THE-" Those evil sea creatures came along in the first area, I found it to be interesting gameplay. But by the time I got to intersection 3, I was tired of seeing those buggers. I was relieved to see they did not show up in the final area.
Even though the final area did not feature the diabolical sea Cyclops, I still had a problem with it. Don't get me wrong, the design and theme- or themes- of the area itself were pretty dang cool, but there was one important issue. What if you fall into the void and get inventory wiped? The player's spawn is set to the beginning of the area upon entrance with no way of accessing the rest of the map after going in. So if you lose your stuff here, you're screwed. This is what happened to me when I played it. Needless to say, trudging through the final area with absolutely nothing was not an enjoyable experience.
Overall, this was a great map, but the gripes I ranted about killed a few parts of the experience for me.

Alright, so this thread being the place to talk about CTM, I thought I'd share a little.
...no, I'm not a map maker... I sort of wish I had the skills and time for that, but...
I've never beaten a CTM map. Sure, I've attempted several, but never actually completed that monument.
The closest I've ever gotten that I recall was Vechs' Sunburn Islands going solo, and of course that sounds pathetic, but yeah. Other maps I've attempted, some alone, some with a friend, include Simulation Protocol 2, Uncharted Territory 2&3, The Painter, and even Pantheon (mostly just to see how brutal the beginning was... and it certainly delivered), among many others, all of varying amounts of progress and legit play.
Most of the time, it's the same story: I (or my friend) gets bored, and we/I move on to something else, thinking we/I might come back to it later, but never actually doing so.
...so now here I am, starting Vinyl Fantasy I & II, once again mostly for kicks and nostalgia, paying no heed to their supposed difficulty.
Actually, I was gonna try Ragecraft III, but those herobrine zombies in the first area are just too much for me ;-;
TL;DR I'm an individual sitting on the fence between "n00b" and "veteran," who now plays maps not for a serious attempt at completion but for casually trying new/old things for the heck of it.
What are some of the maps you guys might be attempting, maybe seriously, maybe just to see how much pain you'll find yourself in? Or is this more of a builder's thread, rather than a player's thread? I was never quite sure...
Essentially, I was thinking of an odd idea which would somewhat mix up the CTM experience by reversing the process: instead of completing a monument, the goal is to take blocks from a central area (or perhaps others) and place them in their proper locations on the map.
A thought for a map I came up with to use this idea was a sort of giant spaceship, and you had to explore the spaceship to repair damaged critical components (which would be some structure into which you would place a block, such as wool, or maybe a jukebox style to represent "circuits"). Different areas could be the bridge, the engines, etc..
Maybe this is too much like an adventure map, rather than a CTM. I dunno, really. Just spouting off ideas, hoping someone thinks it's cool, maybe...
Check out my Zelda Adventure Modpack, currently in alpha!

@TheMineMaster2 You're fine posting here, it is a CTM community thread, not a CTM builder thread. It just happens that those groups tend to overlap quite a bit.
As far as beating maps goes, have you tried playing any mini CTMs? I can understand enjoying playing large ones even if you don't beat them, but it is very satisfying to beat a map. Mini CTMs could be a good place to start. I'd take a look at Eventide Trance by three_two if you enjoy his style in VF. There are a lot of other maps that get made in the Strawberry Jam as well.
Thanks so much!

The picture is not clear, try to upload it to Imgur, it's a good site
Did that work?
I'm alive, if anyone here actually remembers me.
It's not prettified yet, but I've been messing around with dungeon layouts. Bonus points if you know what this is based off of.
P.S. Any thoughts on interior decoration? I have a couple Ideas, but throw some at me if anything comes to mind.
