**SPECIAL NOTES:
Due to player requests, the default download now has keepInventory with a few effects on death. This makes the map more playable as it is quite common to lose your hard-earned gear in lava or fire without it. You can turn it off if you would prefer to play more "hardcore".
A short novel has been written featuring this map! You can thank mcforum user Jexd for this story set in the world of Exiled. I'd highly recommand checking it out, it's a short but fun read! More lore on the ancient ruins and their creators:
The builders of the ancient ruins have mysteriously vanished leaving lots of abandoned builds and strange artifacts behind. Their technology, however, still works and can be used to aid in your survival and escape if you figure out how things work. All their builds and tools are made from natural nether materials and we designed their structures thinking about how a real civilization might have lived in the nether with their own architecture styles, unique from those commonly used by humans. They did not speak or write english but they did use carvings, symbols, and other means to communicate and the ruins have them around. Most can be decoded if you pay attention.
They used gold as their main metal, example custom items can be found as loot around the various ruins, often with surprising durability or enchants. They also used blaze rods, bones, and other items as tools and you'll find many examples you can gather and use in your own survival. They lived peacefully with the nether creatures and you may find statues depicting them or farms where they were kept as pets. The ancient race primarily ate mushrooms and nether wart and you'll find many gardens growing it.
Among the different towns you find, each has a distinct industry and they traded with each other. Examples include: farming, mining, smelting, tool casting, enchanting, tool repair, ranching, shipbuilding, resort, obsidian/glowstone manufacturing, and various futuristic techs and industries. If you pay attention you may notice and enjoy the unique builds which depict the unique way of life in each settlement and creation. We spent hours of building on this map for this reason. Hope you enjoy! There is a lot of backstory you can learn about them ingame if you solve the puzzles and escape, reaching the end. The third dimension is the key. Check out the info/tips sections for puzzle hints if you get stuck.
Extra Pictures & Changelog:
Welcome to Exiled V2.0, my New Year's present to the map LP community!
I have taken into account everyone's suggestions including the balanced views of the three teams that I know of that fully beat the map.
The changelog is as follows:
- dozens of new items make the loot from all areas less underwhelming. A lot of the loot in Exiled is purely aesthetic and not terribly useful to the player since these are old ruins, however, players expressed interest in getting more for their exploration so I've obliged. Items are still in nether theme though so you won't find much iron or diamond. - 2 new unique items: tattered tome and battering stick make fighting pigman swarms a bit easier
- 2 new ruins were created
- 1 new mystery machine was added that can be utilized if you figure out how it works
- paths and directional hints were added to the harder-to-find areas making the game easier to explore and complete
- new subtle clues were added, aiding in the final puzzle-solving
Pictures:
1-4 players, and play with friend if you can, exile is lonely without it!
You must play this map in version 1.8+, the version in which I created it. Maps opened by version 1.7 or earlier will experience a known bug where chest contents are deleted!
Render: 8+ chunks, recommended as high as you can it will help with exploring
Command blocks: enabled, if playing on a server with friends
Reduce Particles: If you experience lag it may be due to the large amount of particle animations due to fire and lava in the nether. Reducing particles may improve your fps dramatically.
Don't Cheat by using commands! You can change the gamerules if you wish or add a scoreboard, but don't use it to give yourself free items or change gamemodes.
You may adjust the difficulty from hard-->normal-->easy. The map is tough on hard difficulty, especially fortresses due to very high spawn rates and I want it to be fun for everyone so there are no rules about what difficulty you need to play on. However, this is a dangerous survival map and needs to stay that way though so no peaceful! Also your game may remove some critical features if you toggle to peaceful. Note that zombie summoning only works on hard so if you play the map on a lower difficulty you may need to toggle back briefly while farming zombies to accomplish that challenge.
Exiled Challenge List: This document is given as a book in-game and describes some of what is possible on this map to get you thinking

Puzzle hints [Spoilers!] Here are some hints that will help solve the puzzles in Exiled if you are stuck
The builders of the ancient ruins have mysteriously vanished leaving lots of abandoned builds and strange artifacts behind. Their technology, however, still works and can be used to aid in your survival and escape if you figure out how things work. All their builds and tools are made from natural nether materials.
Things to keep an eye out for:
- the makers of the ruins have a method of making forcefields and you will find some active fields on your journeys. All of them can eventually be deactivated and mark important areas. The hints are: "obsidian" and "physical keys"
- The ancients did not write or speak english however, they did use a numeric symbol system and you can find it used around some of the ruins. The hint is: "decode by examples".
- There is a ruin designed for storing xp and restoring items. The hint is: "xp levels"
- They used primarily gold tools, often with surprising durability or enchants. You can find many examples scattered around as loot. The gold for these was created via in a smeltery outpost, you can find and use it yourself if you recognize it. The hint is: "heat".
- the pigmen had access to a trans-space portal technology but it requires immense power. The hint is: "all 4 of us"
- hints are often provided ingame with cryptic carvings. A pictographic carving may tell you the use of something or link things together
Survival Tips:
Surviving in the nether is a bit different. You'll need to get used to new sources of food, building materials, and mechanics to survive.
The nether has its own options for growing/gathering food. The easiest is farming mushrooms.
You can grow crops without water, they will just grow slower. Make sure you keep the area well-lit though!
You can craft coarse dirt using dirt and gravel. You can hoe coarse dirt to make more dirt. Use this to manufacture more dirt for yourself!
You can't place water in the nether but you can use it in your prison cell, there are many things you can only do there as a result: fast gardens, fishing, cobble-generation.
Pigman gold enables a plentiful source of metal. Use it. Gold armor is actually pretty decent and makes a huge difference to your survival.
Killing zombie pigmen on hard difficulty sometimes results in summoned zombies. You can optimize this and use it to cure villagers and get rare zombie drops but I’ll leave that challenge for you to puzzle out.
Ghast bombardment is a real and serious threat. Make sure to protect your areas well--especially trees and farms. Build your base into a mountain-side or construct with blast-resistant blocks like: quartz, nether brick, or stone.
Exploration Tips:
Exploring the nether is a dangerous challenge but has great rewards. Make sure that you are well prepared before venturing out though! Running off early can result in your dying repeatedly and that is never fun.
Bring a decent amount of food. There are many situations where you will need to regen quickly (such as being on fire) and food drains fast in the nether terrain which requires a lot of jumping to navigate.
Bring backup swords and tools and make a halfway chest at the entrance to dangerous areas like a nether fortress where you leave your valuable supplies. Bring anything valuable you find back to the chest for safe-keeping before heading home with it. Dying will happen on this map and it will be much easier to manage if you don't carry valuables all the time.
Lava is a real and constant threat. Navigate very carefully until you have fire-resistance potions! When you do, I'd recommend having them on the hotbar to save you if you fall into lava or fire, effectively ending this threat.
Mark your trail as you explore with torches or a good contrast block. Nether terrain is very disorienting and easy to get lost in.
If you want to explore effectively and find the hidden ruins I'd recommend being thorough. A map can help with this, telling you where you've been and what you haven't explored.
Combat Tips:
This map is the nether, without the OP gear you'd usually have, on hard. Combat is very dangerous in the beginning as a result. Pigmen will 2-shot you before armor. Blazes can doom you to death by fire. Ghasts will haunt your footsteps and be extremely annoying before bows. Withers drain your life. Here are some tips from a player that has played on solely hard for years and to which this map seems normal.
Ghasts: always shoot a little above you so move forward slightly. You can still deflect the shot from this angle but it won't hit you now if the shots misses. After bows they should be no problem and bows come quick. The trick is arrows and the sources are there. I'll leave discovering them to you.
Blazes: fire in bursts of 2-3 shots but then have a cooldown. They also are unable to penetrate basic blocks. In open areas use temporary pillars of netherrack as cover while they shoot. Then run out during the cooldown and finish them. They can be stun-locked when hit so they will not shoot as long as you keep hitting them.
Withers: are more than 2 blocks tall. Place 2-high passages to get at them safely. They also have a delayed AI mechanic so you can sometimes pin them against a wall with a sword before they notice you.
Magma Cubes: Dangerous! Especially the big ones! They can hit you through 1-thick walls and deal a hefty amount of damage. Battle from a big distance and treat as you would a creeper. Stay far and hit while retreating. I typically charge in with a sprint. Hit. Then retreat. Continuing till they are all dead.
Pigmen: are neutral but attack in swarms if one is damaged by you. They are also pretty fast. They however are very dumb. Sitting on a 2-3 high pillar you are perfectly safe in 1.8. Something about their mechanics have changed. They no longer jump knocking you off and you can kill them all in safety. They are also easy to channel into small places for farming due to the swarming AI.

Enjoyed Exiled and want to see more of our projects?
In all our maps we make sure the following standards are met:
Our maps are open worlds, not linear. This means you are free to play however you like. We didn't design our maps to have tasks done in any particular order so you can relax and take things and experiences as they come.
Our maps are designed for survival and are as raw as possible. This means we try to pre-build very little leaving that part to you! We might throw in some little surprises to make it interesting or add gameplay feel, but that's it!
Our maps start you with nothing and contain survival puzzles. We don't baby-step you. You'll start and you'll figure it out or not. Most of what you need will be inherent in the way the world generates, but things WILL be different. That's the point of a survival map.
Our maps have ways to get pretty much everything useful. It may be difficult, but if you work hard enough there are no hard limitations. That's one of the things we tested most thoroughly. There are ways to legitimately get pretty much everything you'll need to have fun, though some of the ways you get nicer things are quite different than you might expect or capitalize on game mechanics you've probably never had to exploit before. This is what makes them fun. It's a puzzle!
Our maps have goals. Just in case you get bored or are an achiever we've provided a list of challenges ending with the ultimate goal of each map. The challenges are up to you if you care to do them, but if you are ever stuck realize we picked our challenges for a reason. Going through the list may clue you in to things you were missing.

Thanks so much for the support guys, Exiled has now passed 3000 Downloads and I had news from Lezandria that she is now officially the first person to beat Exiled and solve all the difficult puzzles!!! So congratulations to her!

Beginning is very annoying. I hate how you can't set spawn. There is no consistent way of getting food, unless you just afk for trees. I feel like this map will get annoying, just b/c of setting spawn. Hopefully there are checkpoints, but i doubt it,
You mean beds are unusable in the nether? Yes that's true, you'll have to build some paths/transport systems to get around quickly if you build far out. All that is possible though, I give you a tool for it later. I actually couldn't do checkpoints even if I wanted too on this map as it is in the nether and in vanilla you can't set a spawnpoint in another dimension.
Food, hmmm...sounds like you haven't thought very creatively. There's at least 2 very easy early options for food: fish and mushroom stew. Hope that helps! I was hoping to make player think creatively, but do you think I should add it to the tips sections?
Anyway as stated this map is designed to stretch survival players and is aimed at that crowd. It has lots of adventuring but it is still clearly a survival map. I actually made it feel very subsistent in the beginning on purpose. I wanted to generate that feeling that you were on edge and things were running out in the beginning...It makes you really appreciate each new thing as it comes. Remember the setting: "Exiled". This is not a friendly start like logging in on a new survival world. You'll have to deal with the problems as they come. If that was all the map was I agree, it'd be pretty bording, don't make the mistake of thinking you'll be stuck like that forever. As the trailer shows you can get to a point you're living pretty well with almost everything you'd want through hard work. This map is designed for survival players that like difficulty and want new mechanics to work under.
Then the 2nd half of the map, if you choose to continue that far is more adventure and puzzle solving. Hidden throughout the nether are many ruins and structures. There is a history and story that you can uncover by visiting and figuring out these places. I don't have checkpoints because I can't but as I said getting around won't stay a problem with a little work.
I hope this gives you a picture of what this map is, and if nothing else you should know how to get some food types now. If you decide it's not for you that's fine. I know not everyone will want to play this kind of map.

Home Sweet Hom. (Yeah, my sign actually now reads that, even with the misspelling) Had to do some modification to make it workable, but not bad, not bad.
(I've since remodeled this area again, trying to stay away from the wood block / slabs as much as possible.)
(When your desperate enough, even the spiders become your friends.... this is Wilson)
(Every Nether Portal needs even the basic protection....)
And.... finally..... the tree farm.
These next pictures.... Hmmm, I think I discovered how the Nether works.....
Nothing as far as the eye can see
THE.... BIG.... RED... SHINY.... BUTTON.... Must push the big red shiny button....
I really wanna fire this bad boy up and see what she does...
...
Hmmmm, it looks complex..... Valdarok musta made it.... I wonder what it does....
That's it for me tonight, I'm off to bed. But I have to admit that I have died 4 times before getting a groove on this thing --- including one death from sheer stupidity. Never try to swim in Lava.... it just doesn't work.
Nice Bethel! Great to see you on the job! You know, I actually had you in mind specifically as I was building this map a few times. I think you'll find it quite fun! When you resume your favorite pasttime (fishing) keep in mind that I actually made where the spring falls behind the wall be exposed to sky so if you cast your line into the hole so it floats up the spring you'll get the open sky and rain bonuses to your catch rate. This should mean your fishing is a lot more efficient on this map! Just one helpful little tip to know that makes a huge difference!
Hmmm, what IS that structure?
Glad it was sufficiently intriguing --that was the idea putting it near your portal. It'll probably take a good deal of time to discover its purpose though! Not sure what you mean by "I think I've discovered how the Nether works"? You notice something.

Not sure what you mean by "I think I've discovered how the Nether works"? You notice something.
All the basic elements of the Nether are there in "production lines" so to speak. Thus it would seem at first glance to be some sort of Lava / Netherrack / Mushroom creation station.... but that's just a casual observation from a single visit. I'm with Andria on this one --- need to build a whole lot of ladders to make this more efficient to visit.
BTW: Ought we to be taking pieces of things away with us, or if we do, does that affect things later on? I grabbed me some quartz pillars and some Netherbrick while I was up above the roof of the world.... was that a bad idea?
By the time I had finished building my home (which I am standing on the roof of), 18 of 29 trees placed had grown. This place is going to be a gold mine.... for basic resources.
Nice! I see you are utilizing the space up there well! I personally never built anything up there. I preferred the more challenging builds down in the actual nether as they really change your building sytle! But having you trees/farms up there is brilliant! Very well protected and open up there!
In answer to your question: I wouldn't mine too much of the area. It's not so much that it'll break anything as that it might make it harder for you to figure out the purpose of the area later...

Hello! I really like your maps and I would like to see more in the future! I love survival maps that have unique stories.
Thanks MineBlue! There is a third map coming in this 3-part series and all are connected. Exiled in particular will remain a little more mysterious for longer and it IS a fairly long map with a lot of special content and opportunities. It'll take most of the game for you to figure out what's going on but there's a lot of discovery in store for those that figure out the puzzles and significance of this map. A big spoiler about the story and about our upcoming map as well! hope you figure it out! We hid a massive amount of secret content and backstory into this map.

I FOUND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CAVE-IN AND EXILED!!!!!!
I present to you BOB.... pre-death.... & by the way, thanks for the water bottles, I was wondering how I was going to make potions without a water source.
You can fish for water bottles.
Speaking of fishing, I got a third water bottle recently. I used up my first two for the villagers, but this one I can use over and over again as a fire resist potion, provided I don't lose it! Then again, I'm not sure how I will manage to go about re-filling it. >.> I have not yet figured out how to obtain a water source block.

My point was that without a renewable source of water --- potions are only viable fished bottles. You can't get water any other way that I have figured out, and that really is a problem that needs to be addressed. Without a renewable water source, no potions and your fishing only can happen in your cobble generator pool. Kinda bites, as I like to keep the two separate.
Plus, the way that it is set up now wreaks havoc on fishing poles.... I managed to score an unbreakable 3 pole... and after only 30 fish it's already nearly dead because of all the hits on land and such. Really sucks.

A short novel has been written featuring this map! You can thank mcforum user Jexd for this story set in the world of Exiled. I'd highly recommand checking it out, it's a short but fun read! You can find get the book at this link. The author is writing a series of minecraft novels set in maps by various creators. You can find the other books here: book 1, book 2, and book 3.

Puzzle hints [Spoilers!] Here are some hints that will help solve the puzzles in Exiled if you are stuck
Exploration Tips:
Exploring the nether is a dangerous challenge but has great rewards. Make sure that you are well prepared before venturing out though! Running off early can result in your dying repeatedly and that is never fun.

FINALLY After so much waiting
Since only videos are highlighted in the main post, I wanted to leave a quick link to my first post of the Exiled series! Of course, if you don't want to read spoilers, stay away from my posts!
Also, I'm going to keep track of my challenge progress in a separate post, if you're interested in more.
I wrote about my adventures on the Alpha version of the OathBros/Caplex Build Team's map Space Expedition in my blog! (Discontinued)
For my experiences of the Beta versions of that same map, I started a YouTube series, which (due to prior knowledge from the Alpha) ended up being very fast paced and highly focused on showing off as much of the custom stuff as I can.

Hopefully there are checkpoints, but i doubt it,
My Thread: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1881805-ctm-wip-lands-of-mystery-by-bnm-new-map-started/#entry23248316

Entry number two of my blog is out! Mainly going back to previous areas to explore them a little better, as well as some fishing, pigman hunting and cobblestone farming. Have fun reading!

Clearly ---- the BEST tree farm EVER....

I love survival maps that have unique stories.
yep You gotta love a good survival map! Hope you like it as much as we enjoyed making it!!

I FOUND IT!!!!!!
I want
ocean content(thanks Möjang!),nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).My point was that without a renewable source of water --- potions are only viable fished bottles.
