I started my diamond pick mining bedrock and taped the mouse button down while I went and did something else for a few hours.
(Just kidding - don't bother trying that because it won't work) XD
I don't understand how you can walk for ages in the Nether. I can't seem to sprint off one bread's saturation before hitting a wall, cliff, lava ocean, or other obstacle. Without making bridges, drilling tunnels, etc. I can't really travel very far in the nether. But I've done some work nonetheless in the immediate area of my portal to clean it all up. I have made some cobblestone towers with burning netherrack on top to mark important locations, and made paths in which I placed one Cobblestone block in the ground every few meters, just enough to be able to see what direction it's going.
Since my Nether Portal was on the side of a lava sea, I decided to name it Edge of Madness Nether Portal. Following my portal convention, that region of the Nether is now known as Edge of Madness. As the Nether Fortress wasn't too far away but far enough to be a new region (because it's far enough to make a new portal if I wanted to), I decided to call it Madness Nether Fortress. I'll post a pic later for reference. Then I traveled a ways out and made another portal to connect to a new area for more exploration. I decided afterward I don't really want to explore it yet since I have plenty left connected in the underworld, but it was fun making it. I have to push myself to stop playing in the Nether though because although it's fun for a change of pace it's running me out of coal and iron!! Anyway I named my third nether region Dragonborne. Maybe it's headed toward a dragon, maybe it's just a Skyrim reference, who knows? I don't...yet.
I just love all the names you come up with! We need a Chaos Plateau in the Nether next if you see something suitable.
A new video today as well:
Interested to see how this guy progresses, he seems a little bad with direction which could prove fatal on the map. I was practically shouting at my screen for him to just turn left when he passed the entrance to Bob's room trying to figure out how to get back to it like 4 times!

I use coords too . It's just harder not too so some players say you shouldn't use it on challenge maps. *ahem* reaver.
As for finding places, I think I misjudged the effect of the sprawling underground on players. I like to mine tunnels, but apparently a lot of players stuck to the connected caves and some of my areas you really have do some exploratory digging to find. Is that too much? Should I artificially connect up some of the areas via caves? I do want to balance this middle part. I'm pretty confident the end-part will be fun though. Still waiting on someone to try and locate a stronghold and all that. Or seek out the secret message destination!
I think there should be some kind of evidence to link everything. If there was a large cavern a short dig away, the player could hear monsters or cave sounds coming from it, or putting running water in it makes it even more conspicuous. Also if you built a closed-off passage it can stand out from the naturally-generated terrain and indicate a place for players to start digging. One cool idea could be to dig a tunnel and make it "caved in" with partial stone and gravel fill. There could be remnants of the smooth walls left, torn apart, largely sealed off, and with smooth stone returning to some of the sections. It would indicate to the player that they aren't just digging off into random terrain bound to find nothing.
It's a big world. We can't find stuff without indication of some kind.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).

Alright, duly noted reaver. We are planning one last update to the map, nothing huge, but basically just polishing up and fine-tuning what we have based on late-game feedback. I'm getting together with my other builders tomorrow night actually to implement these last changes, and thanks again for all the good tips I've gotten from you guys as you played! If you have any more suggestions now is the time to give them, this will, in all likilihood be the final update as I'm ready to focus on my other map project now. The plan so far for the Thursday changes are:
- All areas that haven't been found by anyone yet near spawn (there's 2) I'm gonna give a bit more of a hint for, maybe connect them to an existing cave so cavers eventually stumble on them or add a gravel wall or water block for sound. All of those are good ideas. I won't make it so easy that they are obvious without really thinking or looking though. The original idea was to make it difficult enough that they'd emerge as a surprise discovery mid-game, I don't want them so easy you could just systematically look and find them all fairly quickly the first few hours. If that is even possible.
- Gonna remove some of the wood in the first mineshaft, basically every other support and maybe some of the pillar areas so wood feels a bit more scarce. No one, including us on our 3-person game came anywhere close to running out. I'll take the opportunity to make the place look a little more "wrecked" as well as the story indicates it all fell with you.
- We may also delete some exposed iron so it takes players some caving to find it. There are 2 exposed quite close to spawn by the mineshaft that naturally generated and they net you almost 64 iron which is probably too much early-game.a - going to work on making food seem a little scarcer beginning too (already did some work there with 1.2)
- We are planning to update the paper scraps as well and make the clues work without F3 mode. I'm gonna keep the "west" hint though because you can figure that out without F3
- We plan to add 1 more small area as well.

Hey babymercy! It's been awhile. Have you made any more progress since visiting the nether?
Also, are there any new players that have been following this want to share their experiences? We all love survival and would enjoy seeing pics and hearing about your progress!

Not sure what that means, but ok. If you mean you are taking a break from the map that works well as we are working on the final update tonight!!!
Alright everyone! We have a list and we have a plan! We'll be working on the final update tonight and it'll be awesome. we're changing some things about the spawn area, making sure wood, iron, and food is scarcer. We'll also be adding tiny indications of where the most hidden custom areas near spawn are...just so newer players don't have the trouble finding them you all have reported. I do want them to be well-hidden as I was hoping they'd get discovered midgame and be a nice surprise to break the pattern of building/development. That was the plan at least but I must have hid them too well.
After talking with my other two builders we are also gonna change a few things about one of the end-game areas since none of you have reached those yet. I will again be providing you guys with a couple region files if you want those changes in your current games! I'll hopefully be publishing all this tonight if all goes to plan so stay tuned! I have a good feeling about this, and I'm incorporating some changes that should really add to the feel during the course of the whole game based on all of your playthroughs and comments. Thanks again! I'll update the post and links when we finish this evening. I plan on this being the last update that adds anything major or new but if you guys discover bugs I'll of course fix them. This will be the last update to have anything new enough to update using region files though.
The reason for this is I'm ready to work on a few other map ideas, one of which is getting near completion. I'll let everyone know on this thread when/if I put out my new map Exiled which is the map next on my list.

oh that sucks majorly babymercy! I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm pretty sad I won't get to see more pics of your playthrough it was going so well!
I just released Version 1.3.0 though! (final version from content standpoint) tonight. If you ever want to give the map another shot you had a lot of ground left to cover. I'm surprised you gave me an 8.5 having not seen the full storyline or array of secrets I had in store for you guys at the end! It gets way better!
I am very, very happy with this final product. It contains some major balancing as suggested by you guys. More storyline, a cool ending, and slightly easier to find secret areas with a mysterious system of notes that lead to a far off-place. All in all we found it quite fun to play the last chapter as we tested and I hope all you guys do too!
Just like last time:
If you have an older version of the game than Cave-In V1.3.0 You can update your current, in-progress map painlessly, and get some of the new stuff I worked on today! I'd very much recommend it as I think our tweaks add immensely to the last chapter!
download the file Link Removed and unzip
navigate to your minecraft saves folder and open the Cave-In save file. It should be named something like Cave-In-V1.x.x where x is letters/numbers indicating the version.
You should see inside the folders: data, playerdata, stats, DIM1, DIM-1, and region. Open the "region" folder.
Copy the 2 regions files inside my folder (r.-2.2 and r.0.1) to your region folder. Accept if it asks if you want to overwrite existing files. You'll know you're in the right place if you see other region files of the form: r.x.x.mca where x is numbers. You are basically just adding 2 more to the folder that contain the newest stuff.
Voila! Your game chunks are updated and the new custom areas should appear. You'll have to find them though! Happy questing! Contact me if you have further questions about doing this.

VERY nice MrVlix! You are quite far along! Thanks for sharing pics and comments.

I'm suggesting this to most people because I made it easy to do on purpose and I wanted my first players to not feel left out as I made improvements and added things based on their feedback.
