Careful with the "If you can't draw, edit someone else's skin." Some people may not be too pleased about others redistributing modified copies of their skins. Unless it's for personal use only, it's best to avoid doing this.
Can you make me a skin? of a blonde boy with a black t shirt and blue jeans, gold shoes, blue eyes and a picture of an emerald on the shirt please? thanks!
Nice skin, ItsRaiko! (Maybe I'm bumping, but meh) Anyway, wanted to add some other general tips. I'm not really good at making nice skins, but I can at least make some basic ones. First, you need to think of what you want the skin to be: Ninja? Yourself? A character from a game? Well, you must at least have an idea first. Then, if you want, you can draw the design before making an actual .png. It can help for some people. Finally, you use Gimp, SkinCraft (newgrounds.com) or whatever thing to make your skin on the computer.
Man, this helps, thanks. I tried to make an alt Steve which was pretty much him with a red shirt. I failed dramatically.

I use the skindex editor. Because i don't really like having to edit the actual skin file itself. Also another tip: ALWAYS add texture, if a shirt is all one colour it looks bad. He he...link to skindex http://www.minecraftskins.com/skin-editor/
I have seen many people who have "3D" skins, Like you know when you make a hat on a skin at the right angle it pops out??? Some people manage to make it attached to there skin as if there was a block on there skin, DO you know how to do that?
You can do it yourself easily with an application like photoshop or gimp. The way I like to do it is to make a black brush with 10% opacity, then draw over what needs to be shaded (especially the edges).

Would it also be a good idea to do a sketch of your skin on paper?

A good tip I have is to decide what you want your skin to be BEFORE making it. Don't just wing it.

I also have a question about skin texture. How do I make a metal texture for my skin??
