So, with the new creative update, we have more skin options! As seen in a previous blog entry, you can now add things like glasses, hair, whatever you can think of. Just keep in mind, it's only one layer deep.
First off, here's the area you'll be working with:
Think of that space as another head texture, and anything placed in the appropriate spot will match the head in game. To clarify, look at it like this (note: the faded head texture is just for reference, it should not actually be there.):
Anything you put there will float off the matching side of the head. So, anything added to where the face would be, will be on your face. With that in mind, you can add to all six sides of the head.
Here's an example. Let's make some glasses where the eyes would be, wrapped around the left and right side of the head:
And again for easy reference of where it would end up (note again: the faded head texture is just for reference, it should not actually be there):
Make sure you save it with a transparent background. If there is no transparency, it skips the new stuff entirely. Now, upload that skin in your preferences, and we get this:
Yay, glasses! So yea, you can add pretty much anything you can think of. The texture will be slightly larger, so that it can wrap around without leaving gaps between the sides.
Here's a little more complex example. To make something wrap around the head, place it on top of everywhere it would cover the head. The game will match those sides up, and line up any matching edges. Again, the faded head texture is just reference so you see where it will be.
You has a cap!
Also, here's my skin, just to show another example:
Note, at least one pixel must be transparent else it doesn't show.
Ahh, so that's what it is. I knew that a black background voided the whole thing, but I wasn't sure what exactly the "trigger" was there, other than a whole transparent background. I'm already starting to see people with skins that show names wrapped around their heads. That being due to the little "sig" people put in their skins. Hell, mine said "Puyo" around my head when I first figured out the transparency thing.
Also, it probably goes without saying, but translucency isn't supported. That was already well known about skins anyway, but I figured I'd check to see if maybe the new stuff somehow did. But nope, no surprise there. Although, that would be neat for things like visors and such.
Now we can't put our names one our skin sheet? That sucks.
Read above. If there is no transparency, it won't show.
He means if you make a skin with the elevated texture, you can't apply a name to the skin because there is no space.
Well, in that case, yea. You've got that little space to the side of the arms, but that's it. I do wonder if we're ever going to get extras for the whole body (which I imagine would come with survival anyway). Maybe that would allow more space.
I've noticed some weird bugs with this. For one, I have an outer-layer skin that is mostly covered. Except where the hair would be and the eyes. Yet, in-game. The skin shows eyes on the outer-layer.
Clearly there are no eyes there.
It's weird and I don't have the slightests as to why it's happening.

Also, here's my skin, just to show another example:
Right click and save as...
Key:
F = Front
L = Left
R = Right
B = Back
T = Top
U = Under
But I already knew about this.
At least you can make monocles. :smile.gif:
