I am sure everyone already knew this, but there is a skin in the minecraft.jar that contains an armor skin that fits the character template perfectly. When added to the default skin, it looks like this:
There is also a chain-mail skin in the same folder.

Are you suggesting he's getting ready to add fullbody extra textures?
I wouldn't doubt it, actually. Hats are pretty limited by themselves.
But yes, though they fit a char, they're most likely there to fit zombies and skeletons.
I do believe that those armor skins are for the mobs in Survival, but they fit the original skin.png as well.
