Hi all, welcome to my little WIP pack. Kartahni is an attempt at a low-contrast rustic sort of resource pack, while trying to maintain a semi-realistic style. Now that we're done with all the buzzwords, here are some screenshots:
Work on the pack's progressing slowly but surely, since this is really one big learning experience for me. I used to be an active member of the Dokucraft Continuation Project back when it was in its infancy, but this is the first time I've taken on creating so many original textures from scratch. I'm pretty happy with how things are going so far, and hope to eventually release this as a complete pack with all the bells and whistles.
The name's derived from an obscure Hebrew word for 'rural' or 'rustic', since I felt it fit the theme I was going for and because I thought it sounded neat. Since this is a WIP, expect revisions and changes as we go along. I'm still finding my own style, so this thread really is more about the process than the final product. Feedback (positive or negative) is more than welcome.
That's pretty much it, for now. I'll be posting more as it comes.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll give the cobblestone a look, see what I can do about that.
Next up: Oak logs and leaves!
New concern: My textures seem to have a bit of a 'smudged' look to them. Need to work on that. Also need to figure out a colour scheme and stick to it. Some blocks are too light and others are too dark. Looks odd when used in builds.
I personally really like the Cobblestone! And everything else as a matter of fact. I would recommend taking the shading advice above, like maybe more in between the stones, however I think the pattern and coloring is spot on. Packs that are too realistic just feel out of place in Minecraft.
On the topic of colour schemes: I'm not an expert on colour theory, so this may be an issue of semantics, but what I meant was that currently, my pack seems to be a bit all-over-the-place in terms of colours. Dark logs and foliage in contrast to pale cobble and grass. While some contrast is good, I think that keeping that contrast in check allows your pack to really flourish- see Glimmar's dark and dreary worlds, Johnsmith's faded rustic style, or Summerfield's bright and cheery textures. Once I have more textures, I'll start tweaking the contrast and brightness on various blocks.
Regarding realism vs. cartoonishness- I'm hoping to strike a balance between the two. Think somewhere in the range of Dokucraft or Johnsmith. I definitely don't think a cohesive colour scheme hurts realism though- a pack without a central aesthetic just doesn't work.
I'll definitely be looking at the cobblestone again. It could tile better and I'll probably try to add some extra depth.
And finally- logs!
Any feedback is, as always, more than welcome. Thanks for all the responses so far- it's helping a lot!
Apologies for the double post, but I've reached a bit of a quandary- I'm having a hard time deciding on a torch design. Would love to hear some input on the matter:
Version 1
Version 2
Not sure if the brazier adds to the design or just makes it too busy. Any opinions?

I would go with the first one. I feel that the brazier makes it look more authentic, while the second one looks a bit empty (imo).

I like the second one to be honest. The first looks skinnier of course, but the second has a pretty interesting design!
Thanks a lot for all the feedback! I've decided to go with the brazier for the time being. Who knows what'll happen tomorrow though- I highly doubt half these textures are in their final iteration yet.
Anyways, onwards. Added in ladders and glass.
These were particularly hard to make. I mean, there's only so many ways you can design a pane of glass, or a ladder. Especially if you're going for a Medival-esque style, like I am. I'm having to tiptoe very carefully around packs like Dokucraft, Johnsmith and the like. I mean, there are bound to be similarities, but I'm doing my best to make my textures stand out.
Any feedback? Do the new designs look interesting enough? Am I aping existing packs too much?
(Note: the more I look at the cobblestone, the more I feel like I'm just gonna revamp the texture from the ground up. It was my first, and it's very rough)
Trying to work out the tiling kinks on my stone texture:
I'm not super satisfied with it, but I'm just glad I managed to make a texture look kind of stone-like. This was easily one of my biggest concerns when I started working on this pack. Like I said earlier, natural textures are my kryptonite.
(Trying not to think about the 3 other stone textures I need to make. Or the sand. Or the clay. Or the water. Or the lava. Oh god I'm gonna have to animate.)
Any feedback? Does it look like stone? Does it tile well? What could be improved?
A suggestion: two alternate textures. Just make a 5x5 or 6x6 wall of dirt or stone, and you'll see a pattern in it. Patterns aren't a huge problem for man-made things like bricks, but they're certainly an issue for natural blocks. Making a second texture (make sure it won't have a connection error with the first one) wil greatly reduce the pattern.
This thread is just a thread where textures post things and give eachother feedback. Doesn't matter you're not a member of the Texture Artists' Union. There's no membership anymore...
While alternate textures will help a lot, I'd rather not go down the random textures rabbit-hole quite yet- I need to focus on the basics, getting all the essential blocks done. I will probably turn to CTM at some point, but I'm holding myself back for now. Priorities, remember.
(Also, I'm kind of an oldschool texture-maker in that I think my blocks should tile well even without CTM. I feel it should be used as an enhancement, not as a crutch, y'know?)
As for the Union's thread- I might post there at some point. Some extra feedback is always welcome. I didn't know they'd dropped the whole membership stuff though. I remmember when it was just starting up and was rather well-organised...
I'll be taking a bit of a break for the coming week now- real life means I won't be at the computer 'till Thursday at the earliest. When I'm back, I'll give the stone texture another look, and keep working on my sand texture:
I've been rather busy the past week, but I've taken the time to let the textures 'rest,' so to speak. I've been mostly honing and refining what I've already got, rather than focusing on shelling out entirely new textures. Still, I'm pretty happy with what I've got done.
Changes so far:
Vastly improved tiling on Leaves.
Tweaked tiling on Sand.
Tweaked torches.
Overhauled stone!
New tall grass!
Some pictures of the new stone and new tall grass (bonus torches):
What do you guys think? Is the stone an improvement? Does the tall grass work?

Something about it just doesn't click for me.
Heh, I was trying to show how it blends in with other textures, which is why I picked that pool.
Anyway, I'm glad you like it! It still feels a bit incomplete though... I'll tweak it later this week when I have the chance.

As for the dirt- yeah, I do plan on darkening it. I think I'm starting to settle on a darker, saturated colour scheme.
Also, reworked cobblestone and added in oak planks- what do you all think?
