I've been working on a texture pack, thought it would be cool to share for feedback and whatnot.
Objectives:
- Stick fairly close to default colors with most major naturally generated and building blocks.
- Not much besides that.
Resolution: - 32 x 32.
Content: - Original (of course).
Notes:
- All criticism and feedback is welcome as long as it remains constructive.
- This is a fun project. Don't rush me or expect anything at all - literally. Keep your expectations at or below zero.
- I'm not a pixel artist. This was and still is my first major pixel art endeavour, you will see inconsistencies in my art as I am developing my style as I go. I am trying to stay fairly consistent, however I know this is not entirely possible.
- As of right now, I have done all blocks and some non-mobile entities. And even at that, some of them are mere sketch-ups. Particularly water, lava, and fire.
- Do not re-upload anywhere. I don't care if you give me credit. Don't do it without my direct permission.
- Do not steal, edit then steal, re-color then steal, put a smiley face on then steal. Just don't use it for any purpose other than personal minecraft viewing pleasure without my permission.
- If you wish to do any of these things and think I should have a good reason for letting you do so, leave a comment below and I will consider it.
If you find any textures that you find don't fit or could use some work, post here and I'll work on them.
Also, I should have all of the blocks completed by today or tomorrow. The list: Ender chest, brewing stand, cocoa pods (all 3 stages), nether wart (all 3 stages), command block, spawner cage, boat, and ender crystal.
After that, I plan to get started on mobs, so more to come .
Pack updated with all blocks (except emerald and diamond, because they're yuck) and a few non-mobile entities (chests, boat, minecart). Download link updated.
It looks really nice from what I can see, but some more close-up views of blocks would be nice.
Which blocks in particular deserve special attention? I wanted to show a lot of blocks without spamming the page with pictures, but if there are a few you think would benefit the post, I'll definitely add them.
Generally, when you want closer views of textures, it's the natural, structureless ones that deserve attention, particularly the ones that you see all over the place in-game like grass, dirt and stone. You may also want to take some screenshots of buildings, and have a few blocks or objects in the immediate foreground to give the picture more depth. For those sorts of screenshots it can be a fence post, a light source, a cactus, anything really.
Updated with shiny new screen shots. Also spoiled them. I found out about spoilers. Will not have screen shots of builds until I can get permissions and/or whip up a few quick ones of my own.
Looks to be generally a very high quality piece of work!
Nice job on the shading and the tiling seems great too. I also find it hard to believe that this is your first piece of pixelated work
The one thing I'd say is try to get a theme going. There are altogether far too many default ++ pack out there for anyone to really care about a new one, no matter how well it's done.
I'd suggest just nudging the textures in a specific direction be it Doku/John Smith fantasy, Chroma/SMP rpg, Glimmar/Space sci-fi etc.
Great start though

Thanks for the advice! I did start out, like you said, trying to make a default ++ pack, and I was pretty well determined to stick to it. However, in retrospect, there were a lot of blocks that would have benefited from a general theme - something to add to it. I'm thinking about going back over all of my blocks and doing two things, now that I've looked a bit into practical pixel art techniques. 1. Stick to a consistent color palette. I purposefully didn't have one the first go around, not because I knew what a color palette was, but because I was sticking with default colors. And 2. Stick to a theme. What the theme is, I don't know yet, I'm sure it'll take a bit of inspiration and tinkering, but I'll find one. It might be a good idea to pause here and re-work the existing textures before I move on to mobs etc.
Also a flippin' good set of textures! Like you, I was new to digital texturing when I started making a MC texture pack. Let me just say your first efforts are way better than mine were, way back then...excellent in fact! I certainly look forward to trying this out.
As regards a theme, I agree with Squid, but just go with the flow, I'm sure something you like will come to the fore.
Wow! This is actually quite good! The colors are a bit default-y, but the individual compositions are nice and the shading on each one is excellent. One of the absolute best "Faithful" style packs I've seen.
My only complaints are a few technical problems here and there. Your cobblestone and moss stone have a dark vertical line running through them. Likewise, there's a vertical dark/transparent patch in most of your leaves that's really pervasive.
A few of your other textures, stone and netherrack in particular, have strong repeating patterns. The good thing is that because of your color choices and shading they're not super-noticeable so mostly annoy people like me who are really good at noticing repeating patterns.
I really like this pack, and while I won't likely use it (too default-y) I think you should definitely continue it. These "Faithful" type packs tend to be very popular, and since yours has clear artistic superiority over most of the ones I've seen around I imagine you'll have quite a following before long.
Sadly, real life takes precedence over this texture pack, and real life has sped up a bit for me recently. That being said, this is still on my mind, and I have been thinking about it some. When I do have my chance to return to working on this, I plan to re-do a few of the textures that I'm not content with, as well as re-do most of the 'man-made' textures with a more consistent theme. I'm thinking for a theme, maybe choosing an animal to represent each block/category of blocks and have the designs be inspired by the respective animal.

Thanks for all of the feedback, I didn't notice the cobble, leaves, and netherrack until you pointed them out. I don't know how I missed it, but the vertical tiling on the netherrack is horrendous.

*intentionally ignores ntln inquiry* - ooga-booga.. mysteriousss
Though it's more of a placeholder name, I'm thinking about naming it "Kingdom" if I do choose to go with the animals.
