hello! I love the elytra but I wanted to have a world where there were two different textures of elytra, black and cream, in the same game without switching between texture packs. but I don't know how to do it or if it would HAVE to be a mod.
Ex: one player wears the black wings and another wears the cream wings and both can see the color of each other's wings without changing the color of their own.
its very hard to explain... sorry..... any help would be appreciated!

It's not possible in vanilla MC unless you have a cape. As this is pretty unlikely, the only alternative is modding. The good news is that Optifine has you covered.
It's part of Optifine's Custom Item Textures (CIT) functionality. You can find the documentation Here.
It's a bit arcane and difficult to understand if you're not used to working with resource packs, but it's not all that hard. There are also other resource packs that do this, so if you get stuck you can try tracking one down and reverse-engineering it. Alternately if you run into problems you can always post another thread here in Resource Pack Help to get some assistance debugging your attempt.

Either use optifine or a cape.

I hope that helps you.
